Hooker,
You're pretty invested in Sig rifles. Anything interesting to report about the MCX or R556XI? I've had a number of Sig556 (in Original, Classic, and Patrol trim). The early guns had a lot of reliability issues with Wolf ammo (FTE).

The Sig 716 Patrol was my first SIG rifle. It has had zero problems. Quite a bit more accurate than the FAL, especially since I put in a Hogan single stage trigger. Scoped it with a Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24.
The 556XI Russian is a second gen. Was looking to get a BMW of the AK's. The first 300 rounds, it had about a 10% FTF, FTE rate, regardless of magazine or ammo. Sent it back to Sig and got it back in about two weeks. The next 400 rounds had one FTE that I would attribute to 60's era Chinese surplus. Really like the gun but need to fire it some more. Long heavy trigger that will be replaced and will replace the safety selector also. Put a Viper Spitfire on it.
The MCX was my Christmas present to myself. Mounted a Burris 1-4x24 Fullfield TAC 30 on it. About 400 rounds of 55gr. reloads and British SS109. No problems except for, it did not like one H&K Mag, with failures to feed. May just need to adjust it a little but since it runs well in the M4 I just moved it over to its kit.Have never tried Wolf in .556 . Really like the ergos, but wrapped para cord on the top of the skeleton stock. Like the ability to side fold it and put in the Hazard 4 pack. Low profile but still too tactical looking. Just put in a ALG defense trigger to replace the 9lb. OEM.
Been wanting to try some different piston guns other than all the D.I. AR's that I built. Generally satisfied with the SIG's and like the sexy style.

I should correct myself that the FAL is a IMBEL FAL built by AZ Expert Arms with a 18" barrel. Still sexy and one of my favorites as it has run flawlessly.
I'm so used to calling it a FN FAL, as in FUN FAL.

Hey Hooker, how do you like the Vortex Spitfire? I put an Aimpoint on my CX4 carbine and didn't really like it. It was an OLD scope, one I've probably had for 15 years or better. Looking for something that will fit between front and rear sight (11 inches) of my rifle. I also really like the Lucid technologies HD7 Gen III.

I've owned quite a few "built" FALs over the past 18-20 years. If the world was plunged into another "dark ages" you'd likely find me hiding somewhere with a FAL.

I've had very serious FTE issues with several Sig556 rifles. I've tried to love them, but just can't get past the spotty QC and reliability issues.

I had the trigger guard fall off one rifle, LOL.

Just looked it up OUCH! The Vortex and Lucid offerings are more in my working man's price range. Think I might hold out for the Lucid HD7 Gen III. My birthday is not much over a month away, I might have to start dropping "Hints". smile

Most of the "because it's cool" guns are slated for disposition. I'm using the money from my sales to improve my optics and buy ammo for training. I've used a case of 223 during the past month.

I need to get some more practice ammo. I also want to get a set of XS sights for my PX4, but can't decide if I want the standard 24/7 or go for the Big Dot 24/7. The Big Dot is the one I THINK I want as it will be mainly a 25 yard gun then I would transition to the CX4. And on that one I THINK I want the Lucid HD7 Gen III.

I've tried the Big Dot and didn't care for it. I like plain Meprolight night sights. Their tritium seems to last A LOT longer than everyone else's. The Glock 19 sitting next to me has 10 year old Mepros and they're still 100% functional.

I haven't used any Vortex or Lucid products but know they're well thought of.

Trijicon

I've always found that Trijicon NS dim quicker. I think their "window" is smaller and makes dimming more noticeable.

I have problems getting even light on each side of the front sight and the elevation (Unless it's all black) gives me fits. I had a Ruger Redhawk back in the 80's I put a gold bead and shallow V on and LOVED IT. Wish I still had that gun.

They could be mepro's, I will have to check.

Oh I might add that My P225 was worked over by John Quintrall back in the 90's. He was noted nationwide as one of the best Sig Smiths around. Found out a few years ago that He and Tedwca worked together at Apple after John stopped gunsmithing.

Siglite Night Sights from that time period are Trijicon made.

Try green rear and orange front NS.

If the P225 rear sight projects forward over the slide a little it's an original Siglite.

I think you should look into a dual color NS system. Some high speed .mil use it.

I'm not a fan of XS. I've had quite a lot of XS sighting equipment and think better kit exists.

Remember, I'm a guy that tests lots of gear. When I find something that works and works and works....I stay with it.

Maybe I should start a "Architect Approved Kit" thread.

What specifically did you NOT like about the XS "Dot the I" sights?

I'd rather have just a front dot. The post rear is slow for me. This could be because I've been shooting 3 dots for 20+ years.

XS big dot front sights WILL crack on the white area. Trust me. Don't bang your gun around.

I always had a difficult time getting POI-Elevation correct with post dot sights when firing under pressure. Three dots are an align, squeeze deal. Post dot is align, muzzle tilt deal.

Now I have to admit, the sights on my PX4 are a LOT better (For me) as there is a more than normal gap on either side of the front sight when sighting.

If you don't like a front sight filling the rear gap you're sighting wrong. Your rear sight should be barely visible / barely noticed. Front sight focus is what combat handgunning is about.

You're overthinking it.

If the gap fill is distracting - file out the rear gap to open it up or use non-NS rear and NS front.

Yeah I find the lack of side distance VERY detrimental. Also I think that I am trying to line up the TOP of both sights instead of the dots. It's probably my eyes as I wear glasses and have a natural astigmatism .

Randy, the Aimpoint T-1 weighs 3.0 ounces and is about 3" long. Battery life is 5 years on setting 8 of 10.

Just looked it up OUCH! The Vortex and Lucid offerings are more in my working man's price range. Think I might hold out for the Lucid HD7 Gen III. My birthday is not much over a month away, I might have to start dropping "Hints". smile

I like the Spitfire for an inexpensive ($180) optic. I tried it after I had an Eotech fail. Loved the recticle and sight picture but too often when checking, the Eotech's "N" batteries were found to be dead and after the electronics died for the second time I contacted them and got a refund in full.
So now I've been trying to find suitable optics with glass etched recticles. Will always have a sight picture, even if you forget to turn on or if the battery is dead. May have to save up and try an Aimpoint with their killer battery life, but am partial to the circle dot for my aging eyes. My grail would be a VCOG.
A buddy tried the Lucid and found the Dot to be irregular and the unit seemed to just have a cheap feel to it. He sent it back.

Hooker,
I've had a couple of Leupold Circle-Dot scopes with actual reticles (visible without batteries). I like the scopes, and found the illumination plenty bright for day use.

Been looking at the Leupold 1.25-4x20 VX-R patrol, about $600, but way less expensive than the mark 4,6,&8
Currently have 1X4's by Vortex and Burris, not bad But I like my Leupolds better.

I run an Aimpoint PRO. I like it but I wonder about longer range shots with the 2 MOA dot and my astigmatism.

I may pick up an MRO when my Eotech refund gets in if I can find one for a decent price.

I have an astigmatism too. I've had the "comma dot" or "comet tail" with my 2MOA Aimpoint CompM4, but oddly I've only noticed it once.

I've been able to make standing hits on a 30" steel gong at 375 yards with my 2MOA. This is "minute of 2 men", but it was all I was trying to do.

The MRO is a 2MOA also.

Deep Concealment = Sig P238, Taurus 38 revolver
EDC = Said revolver or Taurus PT11 or whatever it is--short 9mm
Home Defense = pump 12
Night Stand = Springfield XDM45 with a light
"Truck" Gun = hmmm...don't have one I keep in the truck but if I did, it would be my Ruger Blackhawk 357
Red Dawn / NOKO Invasion = RF match grade AR in 223
Small Game Hunting = Stevens 22 or an O/U 20 I love for rabbits
Big Game Hunting = too many to choose! Stevens 25-06, Savage 30-06, 24" 30-30, or my Guide Gun are the go to-s, but I am loving the 300 Blackout now after testing it on a decent deer, and I am still working up the 458 SOCOM and 6.5 Grendel. I think the ARs may compete with the others soon for prominence in the pack. I have my grandfather's 300H&H for anything really big that needs putting down at a distance. That would be my elk gun if I ever get that chance.
Wing Hunting = Mossberg 835 for turkey and goose, SxS 12 or 16, or O/U 12.
Target Practice = Whatever I hunt with
Competition (also name the sport) = Whatever I hunt with. I "compete" with SF45ACP on the number of deer we take on a kill permit in the summer.
Because Its Cool = well, all of them grin

I like the Spitfire most out if Vortex's red dot offerings. Had an Aimpoint that was nice...too nice for me, but my astigmatism doesn't much like the non-etched reticles.

I change my gun mindset more often than a guy dating twin sisters....

Because Its Cool = Original Sterling Mk6 9mm Carbine, Springfield Armory imported FAL, Steyr AUG, Bushmaster ACR, Sig556 Patrol Swat

I'm selling all of these. I simply don't have time to enjoy "fun guns". When I have time to go to the range I need to be shooting something I'll actually use.

I'm massively downsizing my gun collection to only those guns that I actually use and that serve a purpose.

In fact, over the past month I've sold off the majority of my collection. I'm actually down to the handful of guns I routinely use now. It feels great too.

Its hard to beat a piston AR or FN Scar and Glock 9mm.

I THINK I've already answered this, but My advanced age leaves me unsure, so here goes.

1. Contact out to 25 yards = Beretta PX4 Strom 9mm Pistol using P9HST3 ammo and 20 round mags.
2. 15-50 yards (Maybe 75) = Beretta CX4 Storm 9mm Carbine using P9HST3 ammo and 20 round mags. (Same mags as the Pistol)
3. 25 yards out to about 200 or so = AR15A3 .223
4. 100 yards and out = Remington 600 Mohawk .308.

MY backup choice for 9mm loads would be Remington Golden Saber 124 Grain +P ammo in either bonded (preferred) or non bonded, but I think each would work for NON BARRIER penetration. I have carried Golden Sabers before and like them.

ok skunk in the form of your last list
1. 0-10 yards = Springfield XD mod2 .45 acp 9+1 rounds
1.5 0-10 yards = ruger LCP 7+1 .380
2. 0-20ish yards = springfield XD .45acp 13+1 rounds
2.5 0-50 yards AR style 12 guage 5+1 rounds
3. 0-100 yards = ar15 in 9mm 32 rouds
4. 0-200 yards = ar15 piston 5.56 30 rounds
5. 50-500 yards = mossberg ATR .308 3+1 rounds

range toys that I would still depend on if needed.
taurus 1911 8+1 rounds .45 acp
tanfoglio elite match 14+1 rounds .40
hipoint carbine 10+1 rounds 9mm

savage bmag 8 rounds .17wsm
rossi rio grande 6 rounds 45-70 gov.

I am sure that those of you that read my above post noticed a distinct lack of the vaunted 45acp. ONE reason for this is that my current "Favorite" 45 is the Springrield Armory SDX. BUT the last time I shot it, after about 50 rounds it had my "You're Number one" finger hurting so bad I couldn't even grip it correctly. Now my 45 Colt 1991A1 is a different story.

The Other, and I guess main reason is that I have a 9mm pistol AND carbine that uses the same magazine. THAT to me is worth a lot. No worries about grabbing the wrong one PLUS for most purposes (Mine anyway) the 9mm loading I am using will get the job done adequately. NO handgun round is a guaranteed ONE SHOT STOP. It's all a trade off, one in which you MUST stack the odds in YOUR favor. Due to my age, eyesight and not shooting as much as I would like/should, I just do better with the 9mm at the ranges I specified in my above post.

I have 45Acp HK handguns, but don't really use them for anything. I've given up on the 9 vs 45 debate. I shoot 9mm better; they're easier to carry and conceal, and the ammo is lighter and cheaper...plus higher capacity mags.

For me the debate is over. I have 9 and 45, but I use 9.

I always preferred reloading 45 over 9 too. I foolishly sold my reloading equipment MANY years ago (12-15).

The 9 v 45 is no different than AR v AK or Ford v Chevy. I'm a 9, AR, Ford guy. Nothing wrong with being a 45, AK, Chevy guy.

Oooooo Redheads! smile

Oh sorry, I got distracted. OK. After thinking about it for a while the Malaga may be a bit to small to house the Glock 17 I had considered carrying in it. BUT It would house my Walther PPK .380 quite nicely. OR If I wanted to get fancy smancy, I could carry my Walther .32 PP!

OK, in .380 what would be a really good carry round. I think that right now I have a box of Corbon left over. What round (brand/weight etc) would you recommend. I guess I could carry my LC9 but would like to have one to put in it and forget it.

Well after reading several articles and watching videos I MIGHT be using my Kel-Tech PF-9 for the Malaga gun. AFTER I figure out the ammo I plan on using and verify it will reliably cycle with said load. I had forgot all about that gun, but "The truth about guns" recommends it and so do some others.

Randy, I've not commented because the only gun you've listed that I'd trust is the Glock. I carry a LCP often, but only because it's the smallest / lightest gun available that is marginally reliable. If I were going to carry a man purse it would have a Glock 9mm in it. If I bought a murse that was too small for a Glock 17 I'd: a) buy a bigger man purse b) trade one or more of my lesser guns for a Glock 26.

I was hoping that the G17 would fit in it. That would give me 35 rounds with just one spare mag. IF that doesn't work out, one of the other dispatchers has a .380 Glock he isn't all that keen about.

Oh and PLEASE don't hold off on your comments. That's another reason I post these things, to get feedback from folks that HAVE done what I am talking about or have at least STUDIED it more than I have. And The only reason I picked the PF-9 over the others is it's a 9mm. The Walthers are a .380 and a .32acp. I GUESS I could pack my S&W model 60-10 with the three inch barrel. I have an ammo wallet that holds 18 spare rounds. smile

MOST of the time I research things fairly well, but still, there is NOTHING like hearing from folks with real world experience.

I have Carried a handgun off and on (working for the Sheriff's office) here in the county for several years. BUT I wasn't worried to much about a CCW weapon because everybody knows me and knows I carried a gun to at and from work. But now that I have a CCW it's a whole new ball game to me. (I've even been known to carry into a movie, but don't tell anyone).

OH hey, is there anything I should do to the Glock BEFORE I use it for a pack gun (Besides new sights). It's a box stock Gen 1 IF I remember correctly)

You know, IF I have to buy a new gun to put in this bag, after talking to the trooper that just walked in there might be three possibilities.

1. G26 that you talked about Gary. Nice little guns.
2. G43 single stack 9mm, also a nice little gun.
3. Beretta PX4 compact, 3.2 inch barrel. This would give me compatibility (Magazine wise) with my PX4 full size AND CX4!

Commonality of fire controls would be nice, BUT... We will see what I ultimately come up with.

DOH! I need to sell some guns. It seems I have enough that I keep forgetting about some of them from time to time.

I already have the PERFECT gun for my new Malaga Gearslinger.
It's my single stack, 9mm Sig Sauer P225! It's already been sent to the SPA for treatment by one of the Premier (at the time, probably about 15 years ago) Sig Smiths, John Quintrall (he is now out of the gun business). And after a lot of rounds, it is 100 percent reliable and fits me like a glove.

I guess it pays to talk guns with the cops! smile

It holds 8 rounds in the magazine and I have 6 total so having a spare or two with it won't be a problem. Maybe I need to buy a few more spares.

Here's a rather good review of this "Old Time" Sig.

Glock 26 - hands down. None of the single stack Glock reliability issues, shares mags with your G17, holds 11rds of 9mm, will likely be the most accurate 9mm you own:

Would be a gun I'd trust with my life anywhere. If the only gun I had to survive TEOTWAWKI was a G26...I would feel well armed.

The P225 is a quality gun. Nothing wrong with it.

I would LIKE to have another gun for the bag, but there are so many things that WE need, need to get done that I don;t think I can justify the money right now. When you only make 3K a month, you got to watch what you do.

3k a month for that part of the country is pretty good wages.

The only bills we have now are the Jeep and the regular stuff, gas, electric, city utilities. We try REAL hard to NOT use our Credit card. House is paid for, no cc bills hardly ever, so we are doing OK, but toys are expensive. smile Still I manage to buy a new knife or gun once in a while. smile
