This is going to be quick, and lack the detail I usually try to provide because I don't feel well. Anyway, I wanted to evaluate four generations of SureFire Scout WMLs that I currently own:

SureFire M300A (KX1A) 100 Lumen with (1) CR123 Battery
SureFire M600A (KL4) 100 Lumen with (2) CR123 Batteries
SureFire M600C (KX2C) 200 Lumen with (2) CR123 Batteries
SureFire M600AA (KE1C) 200 Lumen with (2) AA Batteries
SureFire M600U (KE2A) 500 Lumen with (2) CR123 Batteries

As can be expected of the newer generation of LED WML, the newest lights incorporate improved technology such as higher lumen output and TIR (a type of reflector that focuses the beam).



GENERAL IMPRESSIONS

M600A

The M600A is a first generation LED and has a VERY BROAD and UNFOCUSED throw. This light is ideal for lighting an entire room, but would not function as a blinding deterrent as well as the other lights. It has poor performance in the outdoor environment.

M300A, M600C & M600AA

Oddly, the M300A, M600C and M600AA all perform similarly. They have a centrally focused yet diffuse beam that lends itself to both CQB and close contact engagement (which I define as within the 100 yard range).

The M600AA has a very different color rendition than all of the CR123 models. The M600AA color rendition is similar to the incandescent SureFire lights of the past. I prefer the "cool blue" LED light of the CR123 for target recognition.

M600U

The M600U is the second to latest generation of SureFire WML. The M600P is newer with 600 lumens, but has been heavily criticized for its lack of a focused throw. It is also known for not being suited for long distance target identification. The M600U tested has a VERY INTENSE centrally focused BRIGHT beam. This light, naturally, was the brightest of the all tested however, the central intensity made it difficult to use in confined indoor spaces (e.g. hallways). This light had great outdoor throw.

BATTERY LIFE & COMMONALITY

The M600AA (AA model) wins in the battery life category. While it only produces 200 lumens it has a 3.75 hour max output run time. The other lights have 1.5 hour run-times regardless of the number of CR123 or lumen output.

The AA battery's availability is also worthy of mention. CR123 batteries are not nearly as uncommon as they once were, however EVERY place that sells batteries has AA. This cannot be said about CR123. Additionally, AA battery charges are readily available and affordable.

PHILOSOPHY OF USE
Since this site is determined to use the Z word / theory I'm going to start using Nutnfancy para-phraseology as a counter measure. (NOTE: I actually like Nutnfancy's no KoolAid approach to evaluating gear. I don't always agree with his assessments, but I haven't tested everything he has).

If a person wanted an economical HOME DEFENSE ONLY light I'd recommend finding a used M600A. These are available for under $150 in minty condition. This light, however, is not recommended for outdoor use.

If a person wanted an economical general purpose light I'd recommend the M300A. I recommend this over the M600C because it has the same run time with one less battery. This light won't be as bright as the M600U or run as long as the M600AA but it will function especially considering the sub-$200 price range.

If a person wanted a WML for outdoor use and outdoor target identification I would recommend without hesitation the M600U.

If a person is concerned about CR123 availability or run time (e.g. bug out or TEOTWAWKI) I would recommend the M600AA. The light output is sufficient (and sufficiently focused for multi environment use) and the run time is unparalleled.

WHICH DID I SELECT TO KEEP?

I'm selling everything except my M600U and two M600AA. The outdoor intensity of the M600U has a purpose. The general purpose and utility of AA battery light with 3.75 hours of run time has a purpose. The others are good lights, but outclassed by the U and AA.

I forgot to put the M600AA in this picture. Worth nothing, the M600AA is SUBSTANTIALLY longer than the (2) CR123 models. This has mounting location implications.

Still a great write up Arch, I like the Fenix brand lights I have had really good luck with them so far. If you are still looking I would give them a thought.

PS I always enjoy Nutn, he gets a little long winded sometimes but gives great review nevertheless.

Oh and look into 18650 batteries for your dual cr123 lights, they are rechargeable and I have found the quality ones have a longer life.
