As I set here at work surrounded by "Stuff" I have the mind boggling task of sorting things out, taking what I need and leaving behind the stuff I probably wouldn't need. Tough Decisions. So for starters I am going to work on the Fatty PSK/FA kit. Yeah I know, but HOPEFULLY I won't stuff it to much.

I am going to post a short review on this when I come back to work tonight. For now I will just move a post here that I did elsewhere on the Fatty Organizer I got and what I have in it so far.

OKIE DOKIE Guys, here is my FIRST attempt at the Organizer.

4 Individual Germ-X wipes
2 Prvidone Iodine prep pads
1 PaCk sinus relief (2 tabs)
1 2 PaCk moleskin pads (about 3X6)
1 Mylar Emergency Space Blanket in a Bandana
1 Smith's retractable diamond sharpening steel
1 lip balm container of Aleve/Tylonel
1 GTI/Kizer folding knife (large one)
1 Small 2 inch razor knife
1 P51 can opener
1 Maratac 3AAA flashlight
1 Small aluminum carabiner with 2 split rings
2 Safety pins (approx 2 inches)
6 Band-aids
1 eyebrow tweezers
1 small (about 1X1 inch) magnifier
3 Individual 2X2 Gauze pads
12 Q-Tips
1 Small tube antiseptic gel
1 Ferro rod w/striker and mag rod
4 PJCB
1 Lip balm size container Benedryl
1 Platypus 1 lit water carrier

YUP, I know there are some things that I don't need in here, but I had it so I included it. I am sure the contents above will change, but I need to do some thinking before I start removing/adding things other than I've listed.

That's it so far, and I still need to add:
Compass
Bic lighter
Water Filter
Water purification tablets
Paracord (WOULD TETHER CORD WORK)
Emergency Poncho
LARGE trash bag
Want to change to an AA flashlight W/spare battery
Whistle
Duct Tape
More varied band-aids

Now SOME of the stuff I already have in the bag might have to go to allow room for the other stuff. WE WILL SEE.

Then I can get to work on my Malaga Gearslinger. I think I need an all Stainless Steel Water bottle. The two I have on my Condor II have plastic rings (for threads) along the tops to screw on the lids. AND thanks to Gary they both reside in form fitted Carriers that holds them VERY secure but allows for easy removal.

Looking for needed items will just give me something to do at SMKW next month when we go to the Smoky Mountains again. But THIS time we will be taking our neighbor, the 84 year old retired school teacher with us. She's actually a blast and doesn't act a day over 75. wink

Alright, worked on the Malaga tonight, but first some observations

This thing is NICE! IF you need a small 11.5 liter/700Cubic inch bag I recommend this one. It is surprisingly comfortable (filled it with about 8-10 pounds of stuff and wore it for about an hour and didn't have any discomfort at all (USE THE CROSS STRAP!) You can really cinch it down tight, PLUS if you position it low enough it has a velcro loop that you can wrap around your belt.

The cross strap buckle, where it attaches to the main strap has a small BUT LOUD whistle built in. Nice touch, but it's so loud it WILL hurt your ears.

The main strap is sewn to the top middle of the bag, NOT to one side as is common with a lot of the gearslinger or similar bags. This central location allows for wearing the strap over the right or left shoulder by merely clipping the bottom to the left or right bottom D ring. This is what sold me on the Malaga (along with the size).

It has good padding along the bottom portion (which also doubles as a CCW pouch) anchoring at the top via snap and velcro. IF you are considering this bag just look at the pictures on the maxped site carefully and you will see what I am talking about.

So far I've got it packed (with more items to be added as I find/get them)with:

4 Chemlights
1 Brunton compass
1 Small signal mirror
1 Vial Tylenol/aleve benadryl and Zofran (Patty has semi-chronic stomach problems)
1 Fixed blade knife (Muppy)
1 All Weather dual layer Space blanket that includes hood and Hand covers.
1 Shemagh
1 Fire kit (ferro rod,mag rod, striker, Wet tinder tabs)
1 8X Monocular
1 Quik Clot
4 Germ X-Wipes
1 Led Flashlight (streamlight Sidewinder Compact)
1 Jetbeam 1AA 3 Hi Med Lo plus strobe flashlight
1 Smith's diamond dual sided hone
1 Folding knive (CRK Umnumzaan)
1 SAK Tinkerer
1 30 foot roll snare wire
1 P-51 can opener
1 SAK (Tinkerer)
1 1 3/4 inch web belt
1 Pair Hawk Armor Skin Gloves
1 Bandana
1 CR2032 Red/White flashlight
1 50 ft hank #325 woven cord

More items will be added/removed as I find additional things to put in it and "Refine" it to my liking.

ANY suggestions, Pro or Con, good or bad, are welcome. I may be 62 years old, but I'm a rookie at this "Prepper" business.

I have a small pouch that I plan on attaching to the Malaga periodically (NOT for every day use) and plan on using the speed clips (I have two already). BUT the Alice clips might work pretty nice for an on off type use.

OK, just for grins and giggles Here are the packs/bags I've got.

1. Grey Ghost 3 day assault pack
2. Condor II
3. Maxped Malaga Gearslinger
4. 511 Tactical Push Pack
5. Maxped Fatty Organizer (2)
6. Maxped Proteus Versipack
7. Maxped Anemone
8. S.O. Tech IFAK
9. Maxped Water bottle carriers (2)
10. Custom made water bottle carriers (3) VERY nice, thanks Gary
11. Three (grenade size) utility pouches, good quality.
12. Maxped Fatboy
13. Blackhawk Butt Pack or shoulder bag. Will work equally well in either mode.

Well that about does it for my "Good" gear. I also have three not so hot packs that I wouldn't want to use in any type of "Survival" situation, but work well as book bags and maybe a day hike bag if not to heavily loaded. I think the most expensive one cost me $10.00.

Dang, I didn't realize I had that much! smile

You need some Celox, an Israeli compression bandage, and a good tourniquet.

There's two major brands of wound clot. I see you have Quik Clot--I think Celox is the better one. You do NOT want the one that has clay of some sort, produces an exothermic reaction capable of causing burns to the area, and binds in the wound such that EMTs or ERs cannot easily irrigate it out of the wound.

Also suggest ( if I missed it, sorry):

-- a decent multitool--Leatherman Wingman or other less expensive one (even less expensive is decent quality) or Victronix

-- a signal mirror

-- a signal whistle that doesn't require a bead (,don't want it to freeze)

DT, I have a CAT
Whistle
Leatherman (or 3)
Signal mirror

Haven't seen any Celox. I'll have to check into them. But I have a Quik Clot in the Fatty AND the Malaga.

I think I am gonna use the top pouch on the Malaga as my Med Gear pouch. That way everything will be all in one spot. I will also put some "extras" in another small bag to include inside the Malaga somewhere.

Thanks the the input DT.

While working on these again tonight I discovered that the CCW "Pouch" will hold my Beretta PX4 Storm. PLUS I can put a spare magazine in it so I can have, with one spare mag, 41 rounds of metric size freedom seeds. smile

I swapped out the pouch I had on my Malaga for the one I got from Arch. It is now my Fire kit, attached to the Molle straps on the outside of the bag. I also Put on the Water Bottle carrier I got from him on the other side and it is SO close to taking my 40oz bottle WITH the SS cup that I might be able to stretch it out and get it to fit. IF not MAYBE That pathfinder 32oz bottle W/cup will fit.

Oh and I added a bic lighter and a poncho.

Well with a lot of tugging and pulling and stretching I finally got the bottle WITH the cup on top into the pouch and snapped closed. we will see if it stretches enough to work OK or if I will have to do something different.

I decided I didn't like the way the water bottle and cup fit in the carrier. So I took the cup off. I guess I will just store the cup inside the bag and stuff other items in it so I don't loose all the internal volume of the cup as empty space. Oh the cup holds 16 ounces by the way.

Randy,
Any reason you're carrying a cup and stainless bottle? If you don't have a wide-mouth stainless bottle just use it instead of a bottle/cup combo.

I've got a Kleen Kanteen 40oz wide mouth SS bottle in that carrier Gary, Fits like a glove, almost. It does pooch the top flap up a bit. I am gonna see if SMKW has any of the flat caps for that bottle. If they do, It's win win for me.

The Cup, I just like to have it available, and IF I get a flat cap for the Bottle, the cup should fit nicely. Either that or I am gonna (maybe) get this. Actually I would just like the canteen, cup, cup cover, stove and the carrier.

I know this thread may seem like I am showing off "How Good" I am at this stuff. Far from it, I am not. I'm just a rookie at this trying to learn as I go. It is just an exercise in listing what I am doing and soliciting input from others that have MUCH more experience than I do. AND hopefully to inspire others and perhaps give them some ideas as well.

I just added a 2XCR123 led light to the Fatty along with the 1AAA light already in it. I had forgot all about that light. It's more of a flood light than spot so should be good for area lighting/reading but has enough distance to it to work as a walking around light at night. I am just stuffing things in the Fatty to get an Idea of what I actually want to carry. I plan on picking up a straw filter when we get back east so I am sure that something(s) will have to come out. That's OK, cause that is how you figure out what you actually want to carry.

I need to put some para cord in the Fatty, but I only have 550 cord and some 325 pound woven cord. I want a lighter para cord like Gary uses so I will have the inner strands available if necessary. Hopefully I can find some back east. If not I can always order some on line. It really helps that Patty is supportive of me building up some kits/packs.

Hey guys, I'm still working on my Malaga (ALMOST done) and have a question. Is there one brand of C.A.T. I should look for or one particular brand to stay away from?

Everything else I am pretty much settled on. I should be able to outfit it with everything I want and still not be to heavy. IF it is I can take out some things that may help lighten the load some. BUT as it stands right now I am quite satisfied on the way it feels and carries counting a 40oz canteen of water.

I am going to add my Mil Poncho, but not sure if I am gonna put it inside the main compartment or lash it to the outside bungee cord. That and some meds will just about do me I think.

Skunk, This site has become one of my favorites. What I find through others experience keeps me from repeating their mistakes and saves me a lot of cash.

And as Architect and Greaser already mentioned, I too am glad to see this site re-energized. Tons of good info for me.

After a few days use on smaller tasks, I think I am gonna replace the Muppy on my Malaga. It is nice and I REALLY like it, but I think I would be better served with a slightly longer blade. I THINK I have settled on either the S5 or the 411. Blade shape (point shape actually) will be a large factor in which one I ultimately choose.

I also think I might remove the chem lights and replace the present headlight for one just a tad smaller. I now have the Streamlight Sidewinder compact and a 1aa light in it. The head light is small and will ad a lot of versatility to the mix.

I've added the 275 paracord to the Fatty. It's a good fit for a kit like this. Gives you GOOD cord to use for a multitude of uses all the way from thread or fishing line to lashing brush together for a shelter. Good call Gary, thank you!

OK, the Muppy, as much as I love it, I think is gonna be to small for the Malaga. It may be called upon for more robust tasks and would just be to short. SO, 411 with it's 4.5 inch blade or the S5 with a thumb ramp at 5.25?

Today is Wednesday. We have today to do our final house prep (sort of)for being gone. Thursday and Friday we have to watch the kids and I get off Saturday morning and don't come back until later in the month. I guess you could say we will have Saturday to finish our prep but that day (Weather permitting) will be the day I mow and do the weed eating then pack everything into the Jeep. We plan on leaving at 0500 Sunday morning which will put us out there about 3pm their time which just happens to be the start of check in time.

I plan on finishing up re-assessing my Malaga today and getting it ready for duty (I hope). Rain is forecast for several days of our time out there and I of course hope they are wrong. We will see. I say let er rain, I've got 2 ponchos. smile

I put the nesting cup for my 40oz Kleen Kanteen in the bottom of the holders I got from Arch. It was a tight fit going in, but once past the lip it slid in really well and I've got the cup and canteen together the way I wanted. BUT I still think I will replace it with the canteen cookware set by Pathfinder.

Randy,
Dump the matches and fill the match case with petrol cotton. Add a lighter and ferro rod to your kit, and you'll be GTG. Never go light on fire making. Always chose to have fire making redundancy.

I approach every kit this way...

1) Evaluate my needs;
2) Evaluate my environment;
3) Develop a strategy;
4) Develop a kit to help implement the strategy.

Kit design (in order of importance)...

1) Tools = gun, spare mag(s), knife(s), basic gun maintenance kit, knife sharpener
2) Fire = 2x lighter, ferro, tinder
3) Water = stainless bottle, purification tablets, filter
4) Shelter = poncho, trash/contractor bag, space blanket, wool (hat, socks and gloves)
5) Cordage = 325 and 550
6) First Aid = CAT, QuikClot, moleskin, antiseptic, duct tape, sterile dressings
7) Navigation = LED flashlight with extra battery(s), compass
8) Food = prepackaged emergency ration, 22 firearm and ammo, fishing kit, snare kit

If you still have room...

8) Luxury = polypro under clothes, gore-tex rain gear, improved shelter (to possibly include a gore-tex bivy bag and insulated blanket), more wool socks, mess kit, titanium utensil, additional flashlight batteries, additional food rations, expanded fishing kit.

Restated my concerns in EVERY environment (city to country) from a small black out to a full scale break down or invasion is....

#1 = Personal Defense
#2 = Exposure
#3 = Dehydration
#4 = Injury
#5 = Escape & Evasion / Travel
#6 = Nutrition

Aspirin. Hadn't thought about that. Will do
CAT. Got one
Moleskin. Got some in malaga and Fatty
I wear regular glasses that are supposed to be break resistant.
Bic lighter. Got one in Malaga and Fatty
Contractor bags. Not sure which ones you mean but I've got a couple 30 gallon black ones that have the red "Tie" handles.
H2O tabs. Got some.
Water filters. Got one in the Malaga and Fatty.

Oh and I keep two ponchos (plus two $1.98 walmart special) in the jeep all the time. When we were in the Smokey Mtns. I strapped the poncho on the Malaga just so I would have it loaded so I could see how it carried. Carries NICE and comfortably.

DELETE
I was wondering about the Head light. A deputy gave me (I just gave him two knives) an LAPG 2cr123 batt flashlight. Hi/Med/Lo/
Strobe. And I was thinking about putting it in the Fatty.

Got a Titanium spork. I'll probably keep it in the Malaga if for no other reason than to just know where it is.(I keep the malaga in the Jeep at all times).

I've already dropped the Smith's hone. Got a diamond steel rod in each bag now.

I was really up in the air about the wire. BUT I thought it would work for a snare if needed. It's on a spool about three inches by 1/2 inch.

Well I finally got around to weighing the Malaga today. It had the loadout I talked about earlier in this thread. The funny (or bad) thing is, is that the only thing in the main compartment are a 100 ft hank of 550 cord, a 2 inch wide nylon belt, a Shemagh, and a pair of gloves. Oh it weighs 14.8 pounds and carries VERY well. I'm 6 ft tall and weigh 250 just for reference. I'll try and get a front view later on.

On the back you can see my Poncho. On the right of the picture is the new Pathfinder School (Dave Canterberry) Canteen Cookware set consisting of a 40oz SS canteen, a (Marked) 26oz SS cup and a SS "Stove" to hold the cup or the Canteen. And on the lower left of the pic is the small utility bag containing my ferro rod fire starting kit. Also on the right just above the canteen you can see an orange lanyard. It's on my Wardog, strapped to the bag behind the poncho.

Would it be creepy to say you're a sexy beast?

Anyway, I like the set up. The poncho on the exterior is genius. I'm still trying to decide if I like "gearslingers" (one strap packs). My wife and I both have Sitkas for "ghb" use, but we don't actually carry them anywhere. They just sit in our cars.

PS - I'm disappointed you're not wearing fairy wings or a bug antennae, etc.

It was a National park. Didn't want them to think I was a part of the local fauna and take my picture for national publication. I'm trying to keep a low profile smile

Ah shucks, you just like my hat. smile

The poncho kinda "Nestles" in the area between the top and bottom outside pouches making it almost impossible to slip out as long as you've got it cinched down tight.

I went back and forth about the gearslingers, but wanted something smaller than my Condor II. PLUS I didn't want a bag that I Had to wear on the right or left side all the time.
THAT is the main reason I went with the Malaga (Well that and the size). HOPEFULLY I'll have a picture up of the front tonight, otherwise I'll have to get Patty to post one up to the web so I can get it.

OK, here is the front view showing how the straps set. Kinda reminds me of Jeremiah Johnson. smile wink

And here they are together just so you can see how they fit easier.
