I have been watching The Last Kingdom lately and can't get past how odd Uhtred's knife looks. This style knife is a Seax and looks like a reverse tanto.

Like this :

But I want to start a thread of odd looking/styles of knives of all types.

Yeah, that is sort of strange looking. Oh well, to each their own.

I love a nice seax, in fact I am thinking of getting a custom one made once things settle down.
For centuries they were a utility knife in Europe

The ulu is a funny shaped knife but very handy once you get used to them

Funny thing is that there are a number of knives from different cultures that resemble the ulu
I used to know an Inuit that first showed me the value of an ulu back in the late 1980's
One day I will pick one up, when processing moose, I use my norsehawk in a similar fashion to an ulu (it also works great on the pelvis)

When was the last time you got a moose? Dressed how much do they weigh, it hast to be close to 800 after skinning and gutting right.

The one that my brother and I got last year, when we took the 4 quarters into the butcher, ranged from 187 to 240 lbs if I remember correctly.
I think the biggest one I got in Northern BC was easily a 1000lbs
I think that one, all 4 quarters were over 200lbs each

We always share our harvest
Between the 5 of us on that trip, we got a moose and 2 mule deer on that hunt
So a good bit of meat for each guy.
My brother and I always share with our parents, and my daughter and son in law get some moose as well (they aren't fussy on deer)

Funny how hunting can become a tradition.
My dad was taught hunting by a family friend that I always called an uncle.
One of the guys on this trip was my deceased brother's best friend in kindergarten.
His name is Cory, and he started hunting with my youngest brother back around around 1988 /89

Since about 1991 or 92 a group of us go every year to a place called Pink Mountain (mile 148 on the Alaska highway)
The core group is 8 guys, with some years only 3 or 4 making it, other years all of us make it.
It is always a good time, last year because of the fires in the Pink Mountain region we went somewhere closer to home.
Didn't matter we still had a blast.

Growing up some of my favorite memories are hunting with my 2 brothers, my uncle and my dad.

One of my happiest days was when we got my nephew and a long time friend their first deer, both on the same day

One of our favorites is years ago we went to Northern Wisconsin for a fishing vacation. It was the first time the General ever fished from a boat, and she caught a muskie, and on a homemade lure no less. The muskie is often times called "the fish of 10,000 casts" and difficult for many folks to catch, but she did it! She was so excited that a couple of fisherman came trolling around the point of land just to see what all the excitement was about.:)

That is something Y'all will remember for the rest of your lives. Good memories.

Patty and I will remember our first trip (well each one actually) out to the Smokies. The look on Pattys face and the excitement she exhibited when she saw the mountains for the first time and her first Bear will forever live in my memory. And she was like the kid in a candy store over her first pictures of the bears. Oh, and she was in awe of SMKW and actually enjoyed it. Course meeting Todd and OGB wink (Susan) was another highlight.

I love the Smokies, I typically go once a year and try to hit some hiking trails and buffets. Over the years I have seen 3 separate black bear all from a safe distance.

ONLY 3. First year we saw 25. Second time 50 and the last time 50 or 55. Second time we went met a couple that had been going there for over 20 years and they hardly ever saw bears. They always went in late June, July or August. Bears want to stay cool just like us. They stay in the woods. We always went in the first week of May. Never had a problem seeing bears.

I don't remember seeing any bears when we visited there, but then again we didn't see any bears when we were in Alaska either. We DID see a moose though.

When my cousin and her ex were here for their first visit (Katie was born here but her mother moved them to New Zealand when she was 13, here ex Dan had never been outside New Zealand before)
We took them on a sasquatch expedition in an area that we often see black bears, they so wanted to see one
No luck that trip

Missouri's population of black bears is growing; a couple of years ago my neighbor's Dad said he saw a sow with two cubs about three miles from us. Then someone took a picture of a fair sized bear walking on the blacktop road that goes around the lake (Stockton). I just don't want any to show up on my property!

One of my favorite restaurants in Gatlinburg is the Pancake Pantry - it is right in the middle of town. They have great food, and are always crowded. I have not been there in a few years, but I doubt that it has changed. https://smokymountains.com/gatlinburg/restaurants/pancake-pantry-gatlinburg/

IF it is still there. just at the south end of Pigeon Forge, on the left side of the road (shares a building with a gas station) is a place called "Bojangles' " THE BEST biscuits you WILL EVER eat.

https://locations.bojangles.com/tn/pigeon-forge/4035-parkway.html

They even give you plastic knives! (see how I tied that in)

Tom, have you ever lifted a bear skin? One year when we were in the Smokies they were having a show and tell for a group of school kids out in Cades Cove at the Visitors Center. The lady just started putting up a bear skin when we walked up and she offered to take it back out of the box and let us hold it while she took out picture. It was really neat, but man was it heavy.

Shot a couple of black bears myself, and helped a few others process theirs.

A lot of people like bear meat.
With bear a lot depends on the bears diet.
I have tried it numerous times and done different ways and I don't like it.
You can make decent pepperoni with it, but it is more in the spices.
IMHO
Elk is the best
Mule deer/blacktail deer
Fallow deer
Whitetail deer
Caribou
Moose

I don't like
Bear
Cougar
Mountain goat
Mountain sheep
Fish

I believe it was an article in Peterson's Hunting magazine that said cougar was a lot like pork, and just another white meat. I guess it all depends on how hungry you are. smile

I have a friend up in Michigan who has a hunting cabin. He has a bear skin that he shot about a 1/2 mile from the cabin draped over his lazy-boy. He also has a stuffed black squirrel sitting on the stove that he shot from the front porch of the cabin.

I still say my Cold Steel Vaquero Grande is a strange looking knife what with that fully serrated serpentine 6 inch folding blade.

Ah cool. Kinda like a male Elvira and her Horror shows. I used to watch her show all the time. Talk about Cheesie… grin OK, maybe cheap. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Her movie is a HOOT!

When I was stationed in Japan I worked with a Major that Meet her. Said she was still Hot and actually a Redhead. I did a pic search years later and YUP, she was pretty even without all the Elvira "Get Up"

Man, I can't believe that was 30 years ago.

Bill, you're right about Svengoolie. It is a program that celebrated 40 years and still going. Rich Koz, a.k.a. Svengoolie, does the show in the Chicago area, and always jokes about the suburb Berwyn. We used to go to Berwyn for a pizza restaurant named Salerno's. It had the BEST true deep dish pizza; two slices and you were stuffed! LOL

I suspect that Cassandra Peterson, a.k.a. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, watched Svengoolie when she was growing up in Indiana. wink

Speaking of strange knives, does anyone remember who made the knife Elvira wore? At least I THINK it was custom made for her and not just a prop blade.

Well Shazbot. Just copy the link above and you can see it.

Another historical knife that I would like to get.
Warning mild swearing at the end of why the bollock dagger may be called by that name
