I have a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 as well, I used to carry a Ruger 44 as an always-on me gun but I'm going to try out a 10mm in the same platform that I have carried for the past 26 years. I figure if I have to use a handgun it's because things have gone terribly wrong and I may as well use what I'm familiar with. I'm using some hot underwood ammo for both. I have some Brenneke Black Magic slugs for 12 gauge as well but that will be an alternative to the others.

I haven't had many issues with Grizzlies. I tend to leave them alone and watch them from a reasonable distance. Except for a few cases where we just happened to be close but both of us knew the other was there and uninterested in the other. I picked up some bear spray as well. I figured it couldn't hurt. It's nice to have options. Especially since I plan on spending a whole lot of time fishing and bow hunting in that area.

I think bear spray is a good idea, and it will work on other potential predators like cougars or wolves. It has proven to be very effective, often times negating the need to kill an animal while buying you time to get out of the area. However, I would still keep a short-barreled 12 gauge slung across my back for critters that refuse to "co-operate".

I have seen more aggression from Black Bears. One of my friends is bad luck when it comes to bears. He has been bluff charged, had them stand up and start puffing and popping their jaws. Sometimes it's the same bear that I just passed minutes before or after him. They tend to ignore me or at least tolerate me. But not him. Maybe I'm being mistaken as one of them. I may need to shave some more and shower better. wink

They were selling "bear bells", right beside the bear spray, to put on your shoes at one time... Not sure if they still do but it was literally bells you tied to your boots to warn the bears you were around. We did have fun with tourists.. The question of how to tell black bear scat from grizz... Black bear is loose and full of berries. Grizzly has bells in it and smells like pepper!

Also the old classic of how to tell what type of bear treed you. If it climbs up and kills you it was a black bear. if it pushes the tree over and kills you it is a grizzly! laugh

Some areas the grizzlies would run towards a gunshot since the learned hunters would leave a gut pile behind.

Really though, for the most part they ignored humans. we weren't worth the trouble and hey knew we were below them on the food chain! I do have some pretty decent photos around.

The only thing that concerns me is bowhunting. That's when the most attacks happen in the area. It's a fact they sometimes come to gunfire to check it out but at least they are carrying a long gun when that happens. Bow season I can only carry a pistol when I'm in the field and I usually hunt alone.

LOL, I'm not so sure chain mail would help. They might like a crunchy snack.

M/B, I have seen photos of steel drums where a BLACK BEAR slashed them, ripping them like they were thin plastic.

Bears are insanely strong and far more athletic than people expect. I was shocked the first time I saw one jump a 5 strand barbed wire fence flat footed.
