Pardon my ignorance, but what is a challenge coin?

In the military we carried unit coins around and if someone took one out and touched it to the table then you better be able to bust one out or you are going to owe some beers. I'm guessing that is what he is talking about.

My military service was in the navy and a long time ago. I am not familiar with some of the terminology here. What does "touched it to the table" and "bust one out" mean?

I think they're all references to shocking acts of display. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />

Ok, let me clarify. Someone takes a coin out of their pocket and places it on a table while maintaining possession of it. Leaving a coin out somewhere or actually placing it on a table will usually get it stolen. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> If someone issues the challenge then you have to take a coin out and do the same or you are buying the beer.

This was raised in the Busse forum, but it never seemed to take hold.

Call me antisocial, but here are my thoughts about a challenge coin:

(1) Why?

(2) Shouldn't possession of a Scrapyard knife, carried as an EDC, suffice for this purpose?

(3) If you told me I owed you a beer because I didn't have a challenge coin, I'd laugh at you.

Thanks for the clarification guys, this is all new to me. Are people really suckered into buying beers this way?

Rich - I would suspect that these are more popular around towns with military bases nearby.

I think it's kind of like a poker game.

If you cant tell who the sucker is at the table, it's you.

Arf arf arf... That's my other dog impression.

I am a she by the way!

I have a Seecamp challenge coin- for lack of anything else to call it. OK, I have a Seecamp coin. They did theirs in several different metals. The USN forum had them too. I had those, I just recently gifted them to a friend.

I still think dog tags would be better. More appropriate for “dogs”, easier to carry (around the neck) and could still be used to “challenge”. A lot of those “coins” aren’t round either, so why not a dog tag? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Yeah, it’s much more appropriate for dogs. And a SY necklace would be cool. Or you could attach them to the knives.
