Hi all. Been here for a while (lurker) and figured I would finally join. I had been waiting, like everyone, for the destruction testing and decided to do some of my own. I just never got around to joining till now.

So my question is what would happen to say.... a dcdm if it were shot with a .45?
I will post pics later.

Once I replace the Yard Hook (loses its edge too fast) with a SRKW, I'll let fly a Brenneke Short Magnum slug towards it .

You don't really want to do that. What you really want to do, is send that YH to me. At a significant discount.

Any knife can be damaged. It is certainly not designed to be a bullet stop. This would be an intentional attempt at damage to do something that it was not designed to do. I hope you’re not thinking that the warranty would cover it, cause I wouldn’t bet on it.

Our guarantee is simple. We warrant your knife against any and all unintentional MAJOR damage for life. The Scrap Yard guarantee is on the knife and NOT just for the original owner.

I agree...

Anything that man builds man can destroy...

While any damage claim is subject to Dan's review and he does fully stand behind his product. I would also not bet on it being covered.

And from a personal stand point I would not even consider a warrenty claim under such circumstance because I believe it would be an unreasonable and unfair request of Dan's warrenty and his generosity....

I don't see the purpose in deliberately destroying a knife you intend to keep. I have damaged and broken my share, but never on purpose. The destruction tests that are done by manufactureres and testers to demonstrate the limits of knives do not, in my mind, represent legitimate use that should be covered by any warranty. Now shooting TVs and computers makes perfect sense. After all, they are evil and already broken.

Just to let ya know I never intended to return it under the warranty.
I figured the outcome would be something like it was and I would still have a very usable knife, just with a cool beauty scar.

I really don't agree with what even NOSS does I would love to have half the knives that he destroys deliberately.Though i will admit it's fun to watch and it also shows the limitations(or lack thereof!)of many quality knives.I think that we are all aware of the strength of the knives around here, don't need to shoot at them unless you want to.Honestly I don't think a .45 will do much more to a Dog than mar the finish!I think it would be more fun to put it through a series of realistic hard-use applications that way you come to love the knife even more and it may become your go to knife because it can be counted on(it's proven it).

You should try putting it in a vise and try splitting bullets by firing at the edge.

Maybe if the impact would be in the thicker part of the blade, no damage ( or much less ) would have occurred..

SOG sponsored the World Sniping Championships held in Hungary a month or so ago and one stage had a 25 yard shot with some of their throwing knives anchored in blocks....you were to aim at the edge and try to split the bullet with hay bales and targets either side. With jacketed FMJ's or SMK's or VLD rifle bullets I thought this test was stupid....very much a case of uncontrolled richocets....Annie Oakley did this type of thing with soft core lead bullets in large calibre carbines or pistols....even then I see no merit in this...shoot a matchstick and it is as good a test of your aim.

Shooting the side of the blade is plain simple dangerous...the richochet can come straight back at you....I even think there is a U tube post about a guy testing a .50 cal against armour....had a 709 grain bullet come back and just missed his ear....when the SAS worked with Prof Hatton to design a door breaching shotgun round ( the Hatton Round )to blow the hinges off doors and then disperse harmlessley (plastic slug turns to powder on impact) ....this was because of the high risk of richocet trouble firing 9mm ball or HP ammo at locks/hinges/metal surfaces....a good way to blow your balls off with the richocet coming back at groin level....personally I would give this type of thing a miss. You could end up doing a lot more damage than you expect......

I'm gonna go a different route and say , you took one for the team! As I just bought the same knife as a gift for my bud (from Hunters thread), I am even more impressed with that mutt.

That being said, I have to say as a professional social worker, if you make a move to duplicate it with the RMD or SS4, I'll have to call knife prtective services! they will of course be given a wonderful new home- with me . Ha ha!

welcome and I look forward to more posts!!!

I think it's a fine idea as long as you don't mind riking your saftey a little.

And actually, a guy from the swamp shot his with a 30-30 (well, thats what andy said so, I'll stick with that) TWICE and they replaced it. (I guess it broke after the second shot. )
I say it was a good idea... I always wondered how a SY would take it.
and it's even better to know since alot of troops wear these knives!

I like Noss's tests and don't even mind this one. Maybe I am a little kid at heart
but I always like the idea of shooting things with guns or blowing them up.

I think this is a sort of valid test. Some knives would have shattered but the S7 steel bent and probably could be hammered back into shape and could even still cut. It is also interesting if you were using a Mutt in the military knowing that a bullet strike would not turn your knife into a bunch of shrapnel.

How about taking a shot at the RES-C handle?

One reason it is in Dan's best interest to replace knives that have been destroyed intentionally like this is these tests sell a lot of knives.
Noss's test of the S6 batoning through a metal pipe really helped me out because I had some Scrappers on the CGN exchange at the time. Being able to add "bulletproof" now can't hurt.

I don't even like to scratch my knives but it does not bother me seeing others damage their stuff.

I have started buying users so i can use them without feeling bad.

I, personally, think stuff like this is cool. I love the picture that SOG uses of a bullet being split by one of their old carbon steel knives. As for this "test" of shooting the side of the knife, I am not too surprised by the results because another knife maker shot the side of one of his S7 knives and had a similar outcome. Here's a picture of that:

[Linked Image from gossmanknives.com]

"Tests" like these to me are just fascinating (I suppose it's the engineer in me and my interest in material properties that causes this)!

If you were wearing a Mutt on your BDU's and it got hit with a .45 bullet now we know it would not go through even if it hit the thin part.

Welcome to the yard.

That would surely leave a very painful bruise, but you would still be alive!

i wonder if S7 is the only cutlery type steel capable of this.

what do you guys think??

how would high carbon stuff like 52100,5160,1095 react??

how would less brittle stainless like 154cm or 440c react??is S30V too brittle??i guess it depends on the heat treat.it doesnt seem too brittle in the strider stuff.

this whole thing has got me thinking.

also, how is NOSS going to react.ya think he'll start shooting his test knives...lol.i'd watch it.

surly someone will end up getting hurt if people start shooting knives left and right.

coolest thing i've ever shot was old cars with AK's and a bowling pin with a 7.62X54r from a mosin nagant

I wonder what would happen if someone shot something like a Rossili UHC or
a Spyderco ZDP? Something much harder but more brittle.
Also I would want to start with a .22 then move up to a .223 and a .338 lapua then a .50.

Well, everyone is allowed to do what they want with their knives, but you'll never see me do that... I can't afford it! LOL!

I wonder what a 9mm would do? It is a more commonly used round isn't it?

SR-77 would make some good body armor

It probably won't be any heavier than the plates we are using now.

I applaud this test. Its not something I would do at this point, but it is cool to see none the less. Personally I can't believe it took the hit so close to the edge and still deformed so little. Forget deformation -- lesser steels would be more likely to give up and shatter.
