Hmm, what if we don't buy certain family lines? Leave it blank?

I say about 50% of my knives are safe queen...then again I buy more than one of each kind, so yeah I use and I collect .

JYD #84 This is my rifle, and that is my SHTF Busse knife.

I buy them because they're over engineered. They're few things worse than a needed tool breaking in the field. Busses are built to endure and things built to endure are becoming harder to find these days.

There used to be a joke going around that the only thing that was going to be left after a nuking was roaches and Oakleys (sunglasses). I would add to that Busses. Built to endure.....

The only one I did not vote for is the Busse but that is because I don't have one yet. I have a SOD LE and MUK in the SY with a Bird Dog on the way and hopefully a Mud Puppy soon. I also have a Chopweiller and a Harry Carry custom on the way. I guess the next blade should be a Busse, but I want a user FBM.

I chose collect as my #1 primary reason for buying. I live in the city and I don't get out to the woods as much as I would like to. If i could go fishing and camping more, I would definitely use more of my knives. I specifically ordered multiple S5's so I could do all three. Use one, collect a couple and maybe sell 1 or 2 as well. I don't have the money to buy larger quantities and sell them - but I would if i could. For me, I will continue to buy for collecting - but when I can, I will buy a user and a collector piece.

Money is a big factor because I buy other brand knives as well and since I started making knives I now have to buy supplies and tools. I need to hit the Lotto!

Good poll- Thanks Bruce!

Is it OK that I voted for Swamprat and Busse but don't have any?
I voted the reasons I "would" buy them.
hope it's ok.

I composed a long and too introspective answer to this question before deciding not to post it earlier today, but the bottom line is that while I'd like to be a competent outdoorsman, my limit for "roughing it" is something like a 2-3 hour hike -- I like air conditioning better than mosquito bites. Since I can't carry even a small fixed-blade at work and don't engage in knife-appropriate recreational activities, I'm not sure why I've gone so hog/dog wild -- I tell myself the knives are investments, but on the rare occasions I've sold any, I've let them go at cost, which while nice, isn't how anyone manages their investments.

If I'm a collector, then I shouldn't consider my knives as investments.
If my knives are investments, then I should manage them differently than I have.

Blade 2009 will be very interesting because right now, I feel as if I can be comfortable buying much more selectively. I passed on the HG55 and the SAR4, and I own an abundance of HI khukris, so I doubt I'll pony up the $ for a "Killa Z". If S5 LEs are released at Blade, I'll probably pass (because like most JYDs, my number would be long gone before I get chance at it). I'll follow up on my S5 CG order, but don't feel a burning desire for any other knives right now, so will these feelings persist or will a "gotta have" be released at Blade?

Thank you much, it's very nice to be appreciated.

Last week was an employer mandated (unpaid) furlough, which gave me too much time to brood and consider where I am in life -- I had strange dreams, mostly about losing things and futilely searching for them.

Good poll man

IMO knives like these beckon to be used the way it was intended from the start! But saying that, I do understand why some collect & admire. There is just something very special about a fine piece of steel especially when admired after single malt. Beautiful

338, it just rolls off the tongue.

Honestly, I don't think of myself as a collector. I just see a knife that jumps out and grabs me and I think, "Maybe this could be my new EDC." or "This one I'll carry hiking and camping."

But after "trading up" for several years I look at my knife box and find that I DO have a bit of a collection.

I buy knives to use, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what happens after I get them... for very long!

I am only buying SY knives. They fulfill every utility purpose for me, and I am not a collector, nor would I ever sell one.
