Hi all. Imagine you are leaving for the tour of the world...of course not any of simple and organized, but just leaving your house with your rucksack, to stay around 3-4 years, walking and visiting the world, from North to South, from East to West as you like. Well, was the dog you want with you as an adventure's mate? My answers would be: 1. Australian Cattle Dog 2. Malinois Share your opinion!! Alfredo

Both are great dogs. I'm very partial to German Shepherds so I would say the My German Shepherd. Loyal and protective working dogs.

These two have fought for the world championships in loyalty and intelligence. It was a terrible battle that waged back and forth for months. The Black Lab won out the day with his loyalty. The Dachshund/Chihuahua/Pekingese won out in intelligence due to his compact size and great mobility. Having the ability of flight proved a intellligent way of dealing with a larger more agressive foe. He was more able to focus on figuring out things. How to dig out of a enclosure, making a mess and having the Lab blamed for it. Peeing on the trash can on a regular basis and still maintaining a home. A remarkable intelligence! Peace.

a mutt.... always had good luck with em , and theres tons of cross breeds and personalitys.... give em a good home and stray mutts will be with you forever , also normaly pretty street savy. if i was going to take a dog with me i would probably go with a terrier or other smaller smart dog.... my terrier is smart and quiet and takes commands really well and is a heck of a little work dog. she barks to tell me whos comming down my drive way "3 barks its the post office lady with biscuits) and uncontrolled is probably some random person she doesnt know. 2 barks and its one of my family...also goes after mice and birds and rats, snakes and the kind.
.... you also are going to be a lot more scared of the owner then my dog.
but honestly its not the breed of the dog i think thats going to matter if your traveling the world on your own two feet... youll have to train them at command , how to stick very close to you. to only take food and water when you can say its ok.... there is a lotta stuff out there they shouldnt eat/drink. and plenty of people throw out tainted food.... and have to stop and heal at command...
things i think a 1+ year old stray would help with. of course you will have to accomidate them as well.
even better if there a little larger so they can take there own pack.

I don't have a dog of my own ,but I would go with the aussie cattle dog.My sister lives in Montana, and had a boy friend with a ACD.It was amazing to watch him work cattle.Very smart breed.

do not know. we got them from a pitbull rescue, and got them from a lady up in boston. we assume they were at least two years old when we goo them, though the female, allie, (the smaller one in the background) is older. hennessy, the male, (in the foreground) appeared to be the younger. we got them in 2000. allie lives with my parents, and hennesy lives with me and my brother.

When she was younger it would definitley have been the dog I now have, Maisy who is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier/English Bull Terrier cross..... She is 8 now though and although she would still want to go, she gets a little stiff nowdays after her big walks. Took this pic yesterday...

Another choice could be the Dogo Sardo - his ancestor is the Canis Pugnax (translate: Fighting Dog) of the Roman Empire - medium size, strong, loyal..

Great pics of some great dogs! Probably our "best" dog all around was Einstein, a Rottweiler/Labrador cross. Smart, frienly, loyal, and loved to be with us no matter what we were doing. We lost him last year - natural old age, and we still miss him. I don't believe the Breed is as important as the owners' handling/training of the dog. A good owner will have a good dog.

The obvious answer... he always wants to go and he will follow me anywhere. BTW he is 10 in that pic still wanting to climb mountains. However if I was to get a specific dog to travel the world he would be something a little shorter, I would also like a dog that sheds less but he would need to have an undercoat to stay warm... so probably a mutt of sorts.

Very beautiful! I really would like to trek any wild parts on USA and Canada. Also, I would like do this not having hundreds of persons around me. My question is: may I walk and go where I like, also in solitude, or the rules are very strict and I have to follow routes pre-established, no fire, no camping etc.?

I would take my trusty Weimaranar. Smart, capable, a great companion and all around good hunting dog. He has no issues going after a wild pig. They were breed to hunt large game in Germany. Originally a German nobles dog. We are working for his AKC Good Citizen Award. Obedience thing. My Spook brings me rabbits and birds he caught all the time. He can track, and retrieve. My only concern would be cold, but he does great with a dog coat. And he has a pack to carry his own gear. 85lbs of awesome my Spook is. If I could not take Spook, I would go for a Blue Lacy. Smaller, warmer coat, and smart as hell.

You guys got me wanting another dog. It's been about 2 yrs. since I lost my Rotty. It was tough. My present ins. co. says no to Rotties, and 9 or so other breeds. It will let me have a GSD, and I just looked at a 4 y/o rescue, but we haven't decided to pull the trigger yet. It's got to be the right dog. As you know, it's a big decision. Thanks for the pics of those beautiful friends of yours.

Sigfest. The INSURANCE COMPANY is telling you you can't have a certain dog! What kind of stupidity is that? How can they legally get away with that? Off topic, but Sportsnut, I used your sig to finish an argument about blades. My buddy is hard core into SOG. But he does not feel he will ever need to bet his life on a blade.
So, I told him just because he is right, does not make me wrong. He agreed on that one, argument done.
Now, sry to derail.
I definatly want a smart dog, and a larger dog for a world tour. At least a large dog can carry a pack.

Sportsnut, awesome pics. Looks like your son truly has a friend there. I know the dog I grew up with would have lost its life to protect me. A couple times Duchess did save me. Lord knows, Duchess might have been my guardian angel.
BTW, looks like your dog has a human arm in the one pic.
