I like hunting for fatwood so much i made a blog about it!

its a continuous work in progress, and no where near done, but its a nice start

i love reading your post and looking at your pictures of fatwood bushman! they inspired me to go hunting for some last weekend. didnt have any luck though. is southern california a good place to find fatwood?

sure is my fellow Dawg! look for old rotten stumps and on every one you find do a "cut and sniff" test with a knife.

not so much as pines but they "can' have pieces..........its not that great though.

so when you cut and sniff how deep is the fatwood usually? im guessing the smell is something like pine sap? does fatwood have a certain smell?

Seeing the fatwood hauls got me motivated to go find some fatwood in my area. I managed to get some pretty decent fatwood. Nothing compared to what you have but some of the best I have seen in this area.

I changed my tactics from rotten stumps to weathered stumps and am batting crazy high percentages. I found one that I will have to go back for. It is probably about 125 lbs of pretty good fatwood.

Here is a chunk from the stump.

Thanks for the info on the ceders. I am in an area that has very few pines. I will keep an eye out when I am messing around over spring break.

hey bushman what do you do with all that fatwood you find? i mean of course you use it, but do you sell any of it?
