Thoughts on a BOB. The BOB itself that is. Alice pack, MOLLE, hikers backpack, school book backpack, etc.
Which is the better pack to keep stowed in your vehicle.

Thanks

I favor the School and or hiker packs because they don't say "hay look para-military nut job" or "check it out I gots lots expensive out-door stuff"

Edit:(Not too say all military type packs say that, or that I jugde that)

I used my kids school backpacks for years. Then I kept seeing all those cool Maxpedition bags and all, and I got myself a proper man purse.

I like the idea of a less expensive school backpack, but don't want to sacrifice long range comfort and/or durability. I'm not worried about freaking people out over a military type because when it's time to actually use the BOB, I don't think anyone would notice or give a crap. They'll be too busy. No one will see it on a day to day basis, as it (hopefully) will be gathering dust in my trunk.

I use these Stanley rolling tool boxes. I have one set up with about 3 days worth of food and water. I also have another set up with ammo and other gun stuff. `If SHTF it will be much easier to just grab and go.

If i need to scout or go scavenging i have a Maxpedition Roly Polly Extreme. I still need a big pack tho i think im gonna get a Snug Pak Rocket Pack in OD.

I have a couple "school" packs that I use, or a large Camelback pack. I really want a nice frame supported one to use for longer trips. I also have a Max Jumbo that is good for day walks.

The back packs from Bug Out Gear are a good choice. Picked up a couple at the last NRA convention, and have been satisified with thier performance to price ratio. Trying to put the finishing touches on a couple of Get Home Bags after being reinspired by these forums.

I keep a Kelty Redwing 3100 in my wifes car and One for me in whatever rig I'm in. Its an internal frame pack that looks like a typical daypack. Its pretty comfortable. I use it mostly as a winter survival pack so It has more than the usual stuff in it.

I got a great deal. They were less than 50 bucks a piece on clearance. The only difference from this years model is color.

I've had alot of Kifaru gear. It is very good quality...but for me a much less expensive pack with a better warranty won out and I sold my Kifaru packs.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, if you don't take it out and use it, it's going to rust.

I recently got my MidwayUSA Compact Range Bag. It's on sale right now: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=892447

The wide flat, somewhat stiff bottom would make it great for a vehicle BOB. They have OD coming out in april so I'll probably pick up another for a BOB, while the black will be my dedicated range bag.

I use a Tactical Tailor 3-Day Plus ruck for my primary BOB.

Over the years I've used:

* USGI Medium ALICE with Frame
* USGI Medium ALICE without Frame
* USGI MOLLE Ruck with ALICE Frame
* USGI MOLLE Assault Ruck
* USGI CFP-90
* Tactical Tailor MALICE Version 3
* Blackhawk Phoenix
* Blackhawk Force 5 - This is still my day-hike pack.
* Blackhawk SOF Ruck Kit
* Spec-Ops Recon Ultra
* London Bridge Recce with Frame Kit
* Others I can't remember because I'm operating on 3 hours of sleep

I settled on the TT 3Day Plus because of the size; construction; weight; comfort; and external pockets (I'm an organizational freak).

This is a graphic I created for use on another Survival forum, but I've also posted it here in another thread:

This is how I have my 72hr BOB arranged.
[Linked Image from i44.tinypic.com]

My biggest issue in deciding what ruck to use was: size (cubic inches) and external frame vs frameless.

I have WAY MORE GEAR than would fit in my BOB. A lot of the extraneous gear is more INCH than BOB...which is why I kept one of my TT MALICE ruck kits
