I just had to delete a string of postings due to several postings of crude and socially unacceptable pictures.

My children often read the forum as well as there are young collectors who do the same. They should not be exposed to this type of material

I expect more out of the Dogs. I would hate to ban anyone from these great conversations

Please police yourself as respectable knife aficionados

Dan

They have been deleted, so it doesn't really matter. I'm sure the lesson has been learned.

Yes, and SOMEONE didn't have on his reading glasses when he first saw it!

The other fellow hasn't posted any more questionable pictures either.

What context would be my question. If it was relevant then I suppose it would be ok. But if it's put up just because she's pretty....well I think there are other forums for that.

Just the two cents of a lowly hog/rat/dog... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Not neccessarily GF ! You could post a picture of April holding your Scrapper. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> That way, you will make some major points with her AND make another Yard purchase easier - awin-win situation! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I can hear it now; "Honey , I'm so proud of you, I want to post your picture on the forum". A new knife should be a done deal ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I just want to post my feelings one time, i'm sorry if this is a long post, but i don't plan on saying anything else about it after this. It's just my opinion and i hope no one will take it too seriously.
I think any time someone assumes a position of moral superiority or makes declarations as to what is appropriate or not (which i wouldn't do, just because I am always going to be exposed to images, words, opinions that i feel strongly about, whether it be attraction or repultion -- it's part of opening up to life, learning about the world and one's self), they might want to consider the effect that you really want to produce. Everyone has had homies or bosses or collegues who are heavy-handed, pedantic, right-minded, or controlling, and it always has the opposite effect than intended-- it erodes morale, fosters rebellion, breeds schism and negativity and conflict (like Pascal's theory of education). It's much more difficult to lead by example, to inspire, to coach... Of course i'm not talking about Dan or Patti -- this is their forum and they can run it any way they want. And i certainly am not talking about myself -- i'm an immature punk behavior problem who acts his shoe size more than his age.
When i first heard of Scrap Yard it was sort of a dream come true -- function before form blades made of my favorite steel by one of my favorite knife-making families. The whole notion of a scrap yard reflects a grittiness, a sense of freedom, a renegade spirit, of tolerance and edginess, which i think will attract a lot of creative intelligent people who are non-conformists by virtue of the fact that they are willing to go beyond what is normal, safe, "wholesome" with a spirit of adventure, excitement, most of all FUN. All i can really say is if it's too clean, too straght, too wholesome it's not going to be a scrap yard, it's going to be Barney & Friends, or Mr. Rogers, or Teletubbies. It's not up to me what it becomes, but i hope it stays real, and a little off-center. Again, just my feelings. -Peace-

What were you thinking having avatars like that? (I missed the pics) It wouldn't be allowed on Bladeforums so why would you think it would be here? Nobody is assuming the position of superiority but you are on their forum and therfore should distinquish what's appropriate and what's not. You're lucky you didn't get banned so enjoy the stay and contribute in a nice way like everyone else does.

dogg,

You're very right, inappropriate pics and language are a fact of life and something that everyone needs to learn to deal with. However, to promote a connection between this company and inappropriate images, language and behavior is something that Dan and Patti are right to discourage.

I can understand your concerns, but IMO the rules aren't really that restrictive. It's pretty easy to still be "off center" (I like that term <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> ) without pics of sex and gore. As far as being heavy-handed, the mods here seem to be pretty hands off. They've pretty well given us run of the place with very few exceptions.

Cheers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Sorry if I offended anyone. Since no rules had ever been posted, and no one ever objected before, I thought we were ok until told otherwise. I thought we were pretty much all adults here. I thought I was probably one of the youngest members. I didn’t think kids would visit here, since they probably couldn’t afford / would have no interest in high end knives. With not many people posting here, I was trying to keep posting things related to the discussions to keep people coming back and maybe have a laugh.

Quote
It wouldn't be allowed on Bladeforums so why would you think it would be here?

What does BF have to do with anything? Like it’s the standard all forums model after? When this forum first came online, I thought it would probably be like Rat Chat, where the slightest curse word will get a scolding and an edit. But then I saw no edits or warning for language, then pics being posted with no comments from anyone. So I figured, ok, they keep stressing they are their own company, so I guess they have their own standard, and if we get out of hand they will let us know.

Quote
you are on their forum and therfore should distinquish what's appropriate and what's not.

Well, everyone has their own interpretation of what is appropriate. No posting rules/guidelines were ever discussed. For instance, Dan himself I believe posted a pic of a bloody dog fighting with a hog. A lot of people would think (not me though) that that is gory/animal abuse/torture and would not want their children to see something like that, and could perhaps give them nightmares, and/or an unrational fear of dogs etc. I’ve seen pics of Busses/Rats posted on other forums covered it blood, and usually of the animal in question cut open with blood everywhere. Most people not into knives would be horrified at such a pic, and would probably think the person taking the pic has a screw lose. Again – not me, you know the people I’m talking about. Probably most of our friends and relatives that are not into knives. My family thinks it’s weird that I take pics of my knives in outdoor poses. I think they’d call a shrink if I started taking bloody knife pics. I think most people in general would not think such pics are “family friendly”. Just giving an example of interpretations of what is appropriate.

Quote
Agreed. No pictures unless its clean and revelant to knives

AND relevent to knives? Come on, please don’t make it that boring. There’s more to life than just knives. And what about the outdoors & fieldcraft forum? That would mean no pics at all there because it’s not a knife forum? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> What about nature photos? That mean they aren’t ok unless there’s a knife in them?

What about pics related to the post being discussed? For instance, I started a post about dehydrators, and posted some related dehydrator pics. It makes for much more interesting reading when you have pics related to the posts being discussed. And sometimes you don’t understand what’s being discussed unless you see a pic to help you understand.

Sometimes we want to show some outdoor gear that we have purchased, or are considering. It helps others to better understand with pics. A picture is worth a thousand words as they say.

And we could post comedy pics too or whatever and keep it clean. Just needed to know the boundries is all. I’ve had over 1000 posts at Rat Chat with no warnings about content. How about pics are ok as long as we keep it clean and family friendly? Pleeeeeeeeease?

Andy,

Since most of us are adults here, we should know better to keep the line between what's generally acceptable and what isn't and as long as we use common sense, there won't be need for moderators to watch over us. I'd rather see Dan "Dumpster man" Busse continue to work on bringing us cool bladeware instead of having to waste time editing inappropriate posts. I also think there's a difference between hunting pics (as bloody as they may be) and the other stuff, which has it's place elsewhere.

my 2 cents

Guys - let's put this behind us PLEASE !!!!!!! Now that Dan has officially established guidelines for postings there shouldn't be any more problems. What is humorous to one may offend the next, so we can all try to be a little more careful. Let's stay focused on great knives!

can you guys imagine if all we could talk about/post pics about were Scrapyard knives? It would be like, "yep, used my S6 again today... chirp chirp (sound of crickets) ca't wait 'till some more models come out... chirp chirp....

Is that what everyone here wants? Is that what anyone would want? Why would anyone want that? If so, have fun, if that's what floats your boat -- I guess i'm just not that easily amused, which evidently is my problem... I agree with Andy, Klink, GF, perksy, etc. there IS more to life than knives-- and if you take everything but knives out, what you end up with is... well, lifeless. Booo-ring... Good point too, Mr. Wayne, about the blood & guts -- in some countries, they allow nudity on TV, but not violence. Here, that's flip-flopped. Who is right and who is wrong? If kids can hear a certain "acceptable" level of profanity on TV, is that the standard by which we model our own language on forums? Is that how we know what is right and wrong, or what? Some people are nice and pure and make an effort never to offend anyone, but for those of us with less angelic natures, pushing the boundaries is inevitable, especially when we don't know where they are (and no, it's not obvious to all of us, apparently).
