That was a day to remember!

The pilot climbed out and sat on one of the pontoons and lit a cigarette. Said he was ok, but we stayed with him till the local wildlife boat got to him.

Lucky for him I was fishing with a couple of paramedics, if things HAD been bad.

Haha, Yup just like the day me and the load crew I worked on dropped 1,500 pounds of bombs from about 3 feet. Folks started running like crazy, cept for us. I mean I don't care HOW fast you are, in the time it takes them to drop 3 feet you ain't gonna get far enough away to do any good and you'll just die tired!

I'm guessing that if they ain't fused they aren't THAT unstable?

True, but these WERE fused! BUT the fuses have like a little propeller on them. The must (supposedly) spin so many revolutions before the fuse is lined up with the firing pin. The scary stuff was Napalm. IT was set off by White Phosphorus. Only way to get that stuff to stop burning is to immerse it in water. EVERY plane had a 5 gallon bucket of water setting by the nose wheels in case there was an accident and it started burning, like we were going to pick it (the cased WP) with our bare hands and dump it into the water. Yeah we probably would have.

WP is some scary stuff! Dad messed with it when he was in the National Guard shooting 106mm Recoiless Rifles.
