Think of the compounds as a stone, the black would be 15k grit.
You usually use a Fine 600 mesh DMT? I just checked its 9 micron compound at classicshaving that would be like a 1200 mesh DMT and my first choice for compounds. Only issue is that its expensive. I believe japanwoodworker.com has silicon carbide "lapping compound" but I'll have to see where the other sources are. If you really wanted you could get a few strips of leather, a few grits of Sic powder and never need a stone again.

Kn, USUALLY I use the course which is somewhere around 320-350 grit I think. I SOMETIMES finish off with a 600 grit but just usually stop with the course diamond and then course ceramic.
