I'd just about spray myself to mess up the meal if it came down to it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

sounds like you have had a few similar experiences. As much as I can appreciate nature I'm fine with not experiencing that part. figure I should be aware of it anyways....
no you have it wrong, those experiences were great.
No i wouldn't want to be bluff charged by a griz like my brother, or had one trying to get in my tent, those aren't good.
However the lynx following me was great, one of the best experiences in my life.
The bear coming up the trail behind me, didn't know i was there, so i don't think i was ever in danger.
i hope my kids can have such great experiences.
i think townsend whellan or jack o'connor said a mountain with a grizzly on it is much more interesting then one without.

i hope i am not making it sound dangerous in the woods, the fact is that i am in greater danger while driving my truck to and from these trips, the while in the woods.

in fact most of the time while camping i don't even have a firearm unless we are going to target practice

when you said lynx I was thinking large mean cat. I'm sure one can rip mento shreads but I wouldn't expect one to follow after me. you never what's going through an aggressive animals head though. why id rather have a firearm if I was every any place I could potentially be attacked. or at least some type mace or pepper spray x 2...
lynx can and do kill deer, and if i thought for a moment he meant me harm, i would have found out what a 450 marlin can do to a lynx

i chose to back down from the lynx in order to make it not feel threatened.
a threatened animal may run or attack, i backed away like a predator would do, slowly and confidently without turning my back on it

I'm mostly joking if it sounds like I have any real concerns about animals. I personally prefer to steer clear of animals I'm not familiar with but that's just because I don't know enough. I do plan to do some hunting over time and get out more but that's as I learn more. Finding lots of good info around the Yard and hope to be able to share some good story's with you guys some day.

Sun will be up soon so I'm going to turn it in...

Have a good one Yote!

Love that Puukko. A while back there was a Finn that lived in Minnasota that dealt in a lot of Finnish items like knives, Nagant and Valemt items, etc. I had made contact with him several times as he had represented Finland in the '68 Olympics at the heavyweight category in Greco-style wrestling tournament, I used to wrestle and still coach so we had more than just weapons in common. I was going to get a custom built Puukko from him but he passed away unexpectedly. I do wish I would have got a Puukko from his contact, and still miss shooting the bull with him.
