87burban,
I have gone thru a lot of flashlights over the years. I currently have two I use on a daily basis. They do not use aa batteries but are worth a look possibly. They do not have tons of features that complicate them and they are affordable.

The first is a streamlight strion led. This is a rechargeable compact light. It has three settings of brightness adjustable by the power switch and a strobe option. It holds it charge a long time and is bright.

My other lite is a fenix tk11. This uses 123 batteries, (2) and is super bright for it's size. The batteries last a long time and the output is bright and clear.

If you carry these on your person or in your bag I highly recommend giving the end caps on both a twist , counter clock wise to avoid accidental activation. When you need it a slight twist one handed and you have your lite ready.

I had a sure fire 8x turn on accidentally and start to melt a pocket. So I'm cautious these days.
Hope this helps
Take care

A great not good EDC flashlight is the (surefire 6pX pro) it has 2 levels of brightness an extreme energy saving 15 lumens 45 hours runtime and 200 lumens when you realy need to reach out there and see at a distance and they are made very TOUGH!!!

Monday night I ordered a Jetbeam PA01 1aa flashlight off amazon. I got it Friday!

It's about 3.5 inches long, around 3/4 inch diameter. Operates by a (stiff) clickie switch in the tail and it will stand up to operate in "candle mode".

Has three brightness levels plus strobe (which is why I got it, the strobe could come in useful to me).

LOW= 6 lumens for 32 hours
MED= 65 lumens for 3.25 hours
HI= 140 lumens for 90 minutes
Strobe= 140 lumens for 3 hours

So far just playing around it with it here at work I like it. It gives a good amount of light on med to look around under desks, in cabinets, etc. On high it will allow you to walk around in the woods or from a wreck up to the Highway if you need to. And on Low it would make a good reading or "Comfort" light. Plus it will provide light to see around in your home without disturbing others and without any other lights needing to be turned on.

I DO wish it was another AAA like my Maratec because of it's smaller size, but I like the extra lumens and extended run time, something that could be VERY useful in an emergency. Plus running on just one aa battery, you shouldn't have problems finding something to feed it anywhere.

Oh and the strobe, it will prove useful for calling attention to yourself at night or if you are working a wreck, something I have done from time to time considering what I do for a living PLUS it can become a distraction device.

Even though it is bigger than I really like for an EDC and the tail switch is harder to depress than I would like all in all I really like it and hopefully it will provide me years of service just like my little aaa Maratec has, but on an even greater level.

Oh and the reflector does have a slight orange peel finish to it, throwing a pretty nice full beam.

Ok, after having this light for a few days, I really like it. For MOST of my purposes the med setting is just about perfect. The low beam provides plenty of light for getting around the house in the dark and makes a good reading light to boot! The tail switch SEEMS to have gotten a little easier to operate, or it may just be me getting used to it. The Strobe, well let's just say it is nice. It is VERY disorienting and really shows up for quite a distance so it can be used as a signal device if needed. I would give it 4 stars. That because I wish that it had the tail switch and a side switch to cycle through the different modes.

some interesting discussion in this thread.

That jetbeam looks like a dashing flashlight, with those stainless threads and all. nice purchase!

I never did get an AAA maratec because it is so similar to my keychain Fenix LD01 (R2).

This thread also reminded me it is about time to recharge the never used rechargeable LSD AA batteries in the Fenix in my glove box- its been about a year.

Polarion lights are WHOA, in price and performance.

While I was looking for windup radios, I came across this site and found this in one of the categories.

** NOTE: They claim waterproof to 160ft! THAT I like!
