I also posted this at Rat Chat. Sorry for the double post for those that saw it. I wanted to post it here too for those that don't read Rat Chat.

Here’s my newest cardboard / duct tape sheath I made. This was a new design for a different knife, so I had to start from scratch. I believe it should also fit the Scrapper 6, since the blade size/shape is the same. I haven’t tried it yet with a Scrapper because I don’t have one yet. I also came up with a name for my sheathmaking “company”. I think it rolls off the tongue nicely.

It took me 4 hours to make. It is over an inch thick and is made of 6 layers of corrugated cardboard. The section that has the belt loop is covered with 3 layers of tape, the section that holds the knife is 3 layers, and both sections are held together with 3 layers of tape. The top layer is camo for looks, and the underlying layers are 3M tape for strength.

I tried something different this time. I got some of that Elmer’s super strong glue (it’s supposed to be similar to Gorilla glue but stronger) thinking that I would use it on the inside welt section to waterproof it. Well, that didn’t work to well. I read the label and found that you needed to wet the surface for the glue to activate or whatever. When I put the glue on, after a few minutes it kept bubbling and expanding. It was making a drippy mess everywhere. I kept wiping it down with a paper towel. I let it dry 24 hours and looked at it. It made the cardboard hard as a rock, but the glue didn’t flow into all the crevices like I’d hoped. A thicker glue might work. Though due to the tight tolerances I make these, maybe glue isn’t a good idea.

I decided to go ahead and try taping over the welt section to waterproof it. This looked ok, but I later found that due to the tight fit, the blade split the tape inside. So for the future I think I’ll just leave it plain and just not get water inside it. I usually stay inside if it’s raining anyway.

Also pictured is my Battle Rat / Rat Mastiff sheath that I made 6-9 months ago. As you can see, it’s holding up quite well after many months of use. It gets used a lot, as you can tell from the wear on my knives, all of which have been owned less than a year. These sheaths are quite tough, more so then you might think.

I also noticed that they changed the color slightly of the camo tape. You can tell with both sheaths side by side. The original tape was more greyish, and the newer roll is more greenish.

Later sometime I’ll make another one and put it on eBay again. When I learn to sew leather, I’d like to replicate this design in leather the same thickness as the cardboard. Maybe someday when I’m a “famous” sheathmaker, these will be collectors items.

Well, I hope you like it.

Andy,
I dig that sheath bro...

have you thought of using a retaining strap?? maybe something like velcro?? and for waterproofing, how about using some Superglue Gel?? that might work better than the Gorilla Glue

Nice sheath...

Andy they look good, have you tried heavy duty polythene yet instead of or as well as the cardboard? It would up the cut resistance. I'm thinking the stuff you get in catering food containers etc... Marine varnish may toughen and seal your cardboard. Keep up the good work though and keep working that M6!

I still think we need Andy to switch to using leather ! With his sense of creativity anything's possible.

I agree about the leather- a serious user making sheaths would make VERY good ones, but meantime he's maybe got the start of an interesting 'cottage industry'!

Yeah I thought about using velcro and a strap of tape, but I don’t think it really needs it. It’s so tight I can turn it upsidedown and it stays. The older one with my BR in it is a little looser, it’s loosened with time. But it will still hold it in place if you turn it upsidedown. A slight shake and it starts to slide out. I don’t think I’d have any problems with it staying put unless I were hanging upsidedown. And if I were, I’d probably be having bigger problems than worrying about my knife.

Originally I made my first sheath because I couldn’t afford a leather or kydex one and had to have some way to carry it without getting cut. I got the idea from the cardboard/tape that it came wrapped in. First I was just going to make a thicker version that I wouldn’t have to worry about cutting me through. Then I thought I may as well add a belt loop. I looked at the sheath on my Ka-Bar to see how it was made, and tried to copy the design in cardboard. I’d like to switch to leather once I get some leather and learn to sew. Then I could copy the same design, only leather instead. I only wear it when I’m in my yard, or if I walk down the road a few miles for a walk. Unfortunately, I don’t wear it in the woods. We no longer have access to our neighbor’s woods. I haven’t been in a woods in several years, even though I live in the country. (Sad, I know)

I haven’t seen it for sale anywhere. But, I don’t really have a problem with it cutting into the cardboard. The BR sheath has been used for 6-9 months with no problems. I lay the knife on the cardboard and trace the knife for the outline, so it’s a perfect fit. The only way it can cut into it is if you pull it to the side (pushing the blade into the sheath) instead of pulling straight up. Since the fit is so tight, I don’t even really think water is a problem unless you fall in a lake with it on or something.

When I first thought of making them, I thought the type of people that might be interested in one would be someone like me who wants a simple cheap sheath for using around the yard brush clearing, or someone who wants an “upgraded” cardboard/tape sheath for a safe queen etc.

But these are quite tough. Everyone who saw one in person was suprised at its strength. Maybe I should set up a pass-around for anyone that wants to check one out.
