My cousins and I are planning a trip to a private ranch in Texas to do some wild hog hunting. This will be my first time on this kind of hunt and I could use some tips.

Are you going to be using rifles, pistols, or large knives?

I'll be using a rifle and one cousin is using his bow the other is using his rifle. I'll also take a sidearm with me. Being that its my first hog hunt I'm not ready for a knife hunt.

Stay as back up for your cousins, if their shot placement is off a little bit a boar will come after you. Don't use anything under a .44 magnum within 50 yards I bounced a 300 grain solid point off a 350lb hogs head. The follow up hit him directly under the eye dropping him, I later found the bullet on the inside of his shoulder. Were rubber gloves when you field dress it DO NOT let the blood get on you, hogs carry a nasty batch of cooties. Get it on ice as quick as you can. I only stalk hunt so I don't know how your set up is going to be, if your using your own dogs make sure they have a chest piece on. I only hunt Central California and I hear that Texas hogs are smaller, are you going after Javelina? Anyway hope some of that helps if any of it remedial sorry.

Thanks for the tips Razor. I'll most likely be using a 30/30 or a 306. My 306 is scoped and the 30/30 isn'nt so it'll depend on the landscape. Truth be told, I have a soft spot for the 30/30 so I'll probably be using her.

Luckee,
If you do a search for the Knifemakers wild boar hunt that went down a couple months ago you will get a pretty good idea of what goes on

ME??

I have thought about it for along time and I have come up with this

design and make my own knife for the kill

Will I have a pistol to back me up?? prolly not

Do my friends think I am beyond insane?? yea they sure do!!

When ya go take lots of pics...Ohh and the texas wild boar get plenty big and fiesty!!

We have trapped hogs for many years now since the area started getting populated more and more. Yes they are fiesty and yes they get big, IMO. My dad shot one at about 150 yards with a 7mag last year. Our scales topped at 485 and needles to say it was heavier than that. I'll see if I can find the pic.

Ok found it. My dad is 6'6" 305 for prespective. It was a high shoulder shot. The blood on the snout came from bleeding out laying in the truck bed. It was fun for us 2 to get that thing in my truck that has a 3" lift on it.
