BACON!!

BACON!! - 10/10/11 04:40 AM

Yesterday was a wild success. Father and I saw this big boy come out about 550 yds away right at dusk. We quickly ran 100 yds, deployed the bipod, set up on a road that crosses a highline, turned on the lit reticle (the dark was creeping in and I couldn't see the black reticle against his body), ranged him at 450yds, dialed 3 Mils and sent a 168 grn SMK flying....DRT. My best (and most exciting) shot to date on a live animal. For those not familiar with shooting, 3 Mils @ 450 yds is just over 49" of bullet drop at that range. I was carrying my CAMO 511 in a Rainwalker sheath.

We measured his chest at 48", which estimates to about 280 lbs. Not huge, but a very nice trophy where we hunt.

Re: BACON!! - 10/10/11 07:29 AM

Well done! Hell of a shot.
I'll tell you that every wild hog I've had the pleasure to eat was the best pork
I've ever had. Tender and Delicious. Slow cooked all day over a pit.
The cook( a High School sweetheart's dad) used some sort of vinegar based
solution to keep it from charring.
[censored], I miss his cooking more than I miss his daughter.

Re: BACON!! - 10/11/11 04:08 AM

Thanks for the nice words everyone. It was a great hunt, and even better memories with my dad.

The rifle is an Underground Skunkworks Kukri, chambered in .308. I have a NF 2.5-10x24 riding up top.

Re: BACON!! - 10/11/11 06:15 AM

Hog hunting....there seems to be something vaguely wrong with that on bussekin forums Or maybe since it's in the Yard, something vaguely right

Hey, If ya hunt hogs Northeast Tennessee style (with a KNIFE) Dogs are VERY important! They catch and hold your hog for ya so ya can stick em!

Ish, I would also like to know more about your rifle. I'm in the potential market for a nice HP long range rifle.

I left a more subtle hint as to the maker / model in a previous post. Here is a link to Mike's website..hopefully it's not against the rules for me to post this here: http://www.undergroundsw.com/page11.php He has since changed the company name to BlackOps Precision, but their website isn't up yet and all the contact information / rifle specs should be the same.

The quick / dirty: It's a custom action from Defiance Machine, 18" Bartlein, Proprietary Reamer in .308, Surgeon bottom metal, Timney trigger, Manners MCS-T stock, and a NF 2.5-10x24 riding up top.

Best,

Ishi

Re: BACON!! - 10/14/11 02:27 AM

Nice shooting and nice hog (both of you pig killers)!

Question, how are they to eat? Are they tough (as in muscular)?

We (rural eastern Kentucky) are just now seeing a lot more feral pigs and can legally shoot them year-round (with a valid hunting license, of course).

Re: BACON!! - 10/14/11 10:36 AM

As to eating them....not a freaking chance in hell.... well OK...not before the Zombie Apocalypse anyway. The ferals out here carry far too many nasties (letosporosis as a start) for me to willingly dine on one. And they eat lost of carrion so tend to take on some of that rotting dead shyte flavour.... now....back in the day wee would occasionally pen up a medium to smaller sized wild porker and grain feed it for a couple of weeks, that use to clean it out a bot and improve the flavour. Then impale it on a spit and Bob's U'r Uncle...

Re: BACON!! - 10/15/11 06:40 PM

Thanks guys. I have to admit it felt good to land that shot on the fly (ie: not previously ranged, setup, etc). The training came together...but I have a LONG ways to go.

Re: eating. We don't eat the large boars. They require a lot of work to get the taste right. We donate the boars to a local family that prepares them for family / friends in need.

We like to eat the 50-80 lb piggies. Female preferred. They are DE-LISH! We only got one small boar in that size range last weekend...but we ended up donating him as well.

Re: BACON!! - 10/16/11 02:06 AM

These are closer to eating size if one so desires... all four (plus one not pictured) were shot from the same spot at ranges between 50 and 300 yards.... The "little" Speer 130gn HPs produce SPECTACULAR results on hogs...!!!
