511 question for you dogs

511 question for you dogs - 11/26/11 09:05 AM

Well I decided I might need a 511 but want to make sure it falls under the legal Texas carry length of 5.5 inches.

So the question is what is the length from blade tip to the res-c handle?

Thank you in advance!

I got a hair over 5 1/2 from point to beginning of res c.

The war dog measures right at 5 inches from point to res c.
Hope it helps and good luck.

Yep, I have about 5 5/8", specs say it's 5.5". You could possibly reprofile the point down to slightly less than 5.5". Maybe they would do it at the Yard for you if you explained your circumstance.

I betcha if you email Renee and sweet talk her she could get it down ground down to 5.4 inches for ya. That wouldn't really be a "Custom". Heck they might even have some that are just a tad shorter than 5.5 to start with.

Can't hurt to ask.

I carry mine around a lot where I am and It is really to big for normal carry. I find with heavy clothing and if I have to move around it gets in the way a lot. It helped when I carry just of the center of my back at a angle and it helps but it still is a lot of knife for edc

Ifj, if you want to EDC a fixed blade in the 5 inch blade length, Consider the Wardog. If it is for DEFENSE, be sure and check out the Busse WarDog HACK. It's got a deep hollow ground blade and is LIGHT! Of course being a Busse it will also do anything else you want, but personally I just like the Scarpyard Wardog for an every day outdoors blade and plan on keeping my HACK for defensive carry if I want to.

Shoot, this won't truly be an EDC. The SnG has that role... But, I would like to stay within my legal blade length if it does make it around town.

It is legal to go over 5.5 if you are doing some activity that requires it. Leaving something up to an officer's discretion that I don't have to though seems like a mistake.

I bet you are right! I will just ask and maybe I will be in good shape.

I wouldn't worry about if it's just slightly over the limit. As long as you're polite and respectful (shouldn't be a problem seeing as you're a member of this forum <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />), an officer will probably let you slide on minor infractions such as a blade that's a little bit too long.

I emailed Renee with my order, she said no customs or mods. I replied back asking if she could just pick out a short one. Maybe they will be able to do that.

Surely they can do that I hope : )? Either way the order is placed.

As close as it is to 5.5 inches, you should be able to slightly re-profile the tip enough to pass muster. I did that to a friends Gerber mark 1 once and the only way you could have told it was to hold it next to one that had not lost close to 1/2 inch of the tip.

OOPS, it was the MK II with the serrations. I think I still have mine from about 1978!

Well I placed the order on Sunday so hoepfully she'll(511) be in by Friday. With any luck I will be able to get out and hunt too. This is the only season in years I haven't already filled the freezer with meat.

Any suggestion on a quick sheath maker? Maybe my best bet is to use a Spec-Ops or something of the like.

Make yourself a temporary Andy Wayne Plastic cardboard and duct tape sheath. Heck, I carried around a little three inch fixed blade I've got in one of those for a year and it never let me down!

Our friend Al(AZ) Welke is sure to have a sheath in stock. Great quality and a fair price.
