Ratweiler vs. 911

Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 12:50 AM

Hey guys,

What are your thoughts on the Ratweiler vs. 911? I'd like to hear from users and owners of both. I'm looking to add a chopper to my collection, but it will also double as a camp blade. I reckon that both are outstanding, what can you tell me about the pros and cons of either?

If you want to reference any other blades in this role, feel free. I'm confused enough, a little more can't hurt

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 01:17 AM

To my thinking, I'd much rather have the 911 for a number of reasons.....

-Less weight overall
-More blade heavy
-Res-c handle
-Less money

I know the Ratweiler is quite popular, but I've never handled one myself so maybe there is something about it that I am missing?

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 02:07 AM

I've heard that the Ratweiler can keep up with and even out perform larger knives, but I'd like to hear a direct comparison.

The res-c is a draw as well as the extra 2 or so inches of blade length.

Ratweiler weighs in at 19 oz. Can't seem to find the weight on the 911.

Not sure what price point the Anniversary CG Ratweiler will be, but I see the original pricing was around $180

The ratweiler is a classic and great looking knife!

The dogfather weighs 20.1oz so the 911 is probably a few oz lighter. 18 maybe 19oz. The 1311 is also 19oz

The Ratweiler is a great camp knife and chopper, but the longer blade of the 911 has the advantage in chopping. I have used them both, but never had them at the same time to compare.

Which would you prefer if you could only have one?

Since I got my Chopweiler I've never wanted any other camp/chopper, this is the only time this has ever happened as I have multiples of all my other knife sizes.....hope that speaks volumes for how good the Chopweiler is.

I have a Ratweiler and a Battle Rat and all I can say is get BOTH!!!! I know this is over said but there both that nice. Also if winter camping the 911 will be better do to the warmth of Res-c and ability to chop and split bigger logs.

hell i'd love to get both, but it isn't in the cards at the moment. i do have a gransfors bruks small forest axe that i can pack if i'm up against a volume of chopping, but i don't always want to pack that sucker

I have a TAZ Rat if I could only have one it would be the TAZ.
If it is for Yard work or extended chopping I would want some res-c.
If its a survival, B.O.B, or "only one" the full Tang Taz gets it.

I will probably get an anniversary blade depending on cost, though they probably wont have the DHT.

Neither. I prefer the M9LE to those. But now that I have the 1311, that is my favorite yard/camp knife. I'll probably sell my 911.

the M9 looks like a great knife. I'm a big fan of the RMD handle, super comfortable grip.

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 07:50 AM

My 911 weighs in at 16.7 oz. and the Ratweiler 19.8 oz. The 911 is the better chopper, but the Ratweiler has sex appeal.

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 08:18 AM

I have not had a Ratweiller yet, but if I have the funds I will. I have owned several big choppers--DF, DFLE, M9LE, 911, SOD, SODLE, B11, CGFBM, 1311.....thus far the 1311 is my favorite and it will have a place on my pack. I really want two of the Ratweillers--one for use, one to mod and put some stag handles on it.

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 01/31/13 08:46 AM

I may just have to sell some other blades or my kidney to get both.
Posted By: sumoj275

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/01/13 12:29 AM

I used to say I would sell a kidney, but now that mine is no good I would sale some other steel. Either way it is your decision but I KNOW there is a few Anniversary blades I want.

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/01/13 03:24 AM

After rereading your post you say you are looking to add a chopper and so based on that alone 911 for sure. It will do all camp chores also. If you would of said you want to add a new camp knife I'd say Ratweiler. But the 911 will kick its but at chopping.

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/01/13 03:26 AM

Also it will be cheaper than the Ratweiler

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/01/13 06:26 AM

Get a Chopweiler. Don't look back.

I've owned both. I still own the Chopweiler. That, my Dogfather, and my 13-11 (and a Ranger custom 10") are the only big knives I'm keeping, until the Chop Mastiff becomes a reality and the CG Battle Mistress is rereleased.

If you can swing it, get a BWM. I needed to sell mine. That's one I wish I still had. No regrets though.

The last one I'm selling off is my M9LE. Sad to part with it, but I don't think it can do anything that the Choppy and the DF can't. Right now it's just holding a sentimental place in my safe

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/01/13 09:17 PM

i think the RW will be my first purchase, provided it's cost isn't too high.

i'm not much for the concept of collecting. i don't have more blades than i can use. i try to justify a knife's place on my shelf by whatever role it serves and then kid myself that the half inch difference in blade size constitutes a totally different knife!

Re: Ratweiler vs. 911 - 02/02/13 05:57 AM

Lol. I have way to many repetitive size knives and struggle all the time with selling off ones I don't carry. But I just can't do it???? Why is that? Idk
