411 vs Rodent 4

411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/25/13 08:00 PM

Except for the obvious handle design/material and slightly different blade, why would I not pick up the Rodent 4?
At least I can buy one now instead of waiting for who knows how long. Just keepin' it all in the same family.

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/25/13 08:14 PM

If you bought an R4 directly from the swamp you'd still be waiting for a few weeks.

The blades are really almost identical, and mudders offer a big difference in weight.

I guess I can wait a little longer, maybe.
When I gifted my 411 I didn't think I would miss it that much. WRONG!!!

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/25/13 09:53 PM

I've never had a 411, but did have a Scrapper 5 which is close. That being said, I did have a Rodent 4 for a short spell (days).

I really like the mudder grips, but the R4 also had a great handle IMO. The 411 will be a bit lighter due to handle construction.

All in all, I don't see how you can justify the extra $30 bucks for the R4. If they both cost the same, it would be a much harder decision but the Scrap Yard Price to Performance ratio reigns supreme.

I completely agree you. I do love the mudder handles too.

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/26/13 01:51 AM

Most folks consider micarta handles to be superior to "rubber" ones. It matters more to me on big choppers, but the the steel is the same. The molded handles keep the costs lower, and work just fine. My new "Yard Knife" is the 1311. I have other SY, SW, and Busse choppers, but none tops my 1311 in performance. The bottom line is, get the best you can afford.

BTW: I love mudder handles.

I like the mudders! But I think the choil is to big for the knife.

Elof
Thanks for the side by side picture.
I know that muddier handle is more comfortable.

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/26/13 04:52 AM

Fred,
No problem.
I ordered Rodents 4 & 6 with another member here, Magoo, (international postage is $55) and they were delivered to his place. When I went to pick them up, mine were still wrapped, I took Magoo's R4 and just could not put it down! It was that comfortable.
If I wasn't picking up mine at the time, we'd probably stop being friends 'cos I'd go home with his... Just a perfect fit for my hand.
R5 has the same style handle just a bit bigger, but unfortunately it has flat slabs, R4 has greatly contoured handle!

Very nice set of knives there! smile

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/26/13 03:34 PM

I'm with Elof concerning the R5 vs R4 handle. While I am a huge fan of the R4 handle, I don't care much for the R5 handle without the contours. I really think it needed some contouring, it just didn't feel right to me like the R4.

If only I could get a choilless 5.5" blade on the Rodent 4 handle, that would be heaven...... smile

Yeah with that handle/guard there is no need for a choil at all.

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/31/13 04:50 PM

Personally I like a big choil only if it's big enough to accept my index finger. If it is not big enough, then smaller is better, if that makes sense. The choil on the 411 id barely big enough, a real tight fit for my finger.

BTW
I just emailed Renee about the order page and timeline availability for the 411.
I'm sure she gets plenty of those daily, but I have to ask.

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 07/31/13 07:27 PM

44Fred, I took a dremel tool to my Wardog and made the choil on it just about 1/8 inch longer. Works like a champ for my finger now.

Renee emailed me back pretty quick.
All is well in the yard. The order page will hopefully within the week.

I really like my War Dog as well. That idea is great.
Thank you, Fred

411 for me.... I just can't get along with the funky R series bumped handles....my bank account is VERY grateful for this....!!! Godson No2 is VERY fond of his 411 and it has now skinned pleanty of critters (a fox, a deer and a cat in the last couple of weeks) now as well..I suspect i will have "upgrade" his sister's Izula for her soon as well.... laugh

We've got a plague of feral cats in Oz... And goats, foxes (well they're not domestic critters, but introduced species anyway), rabbits, camels, horses, pigs...

I like the mudder and looking forward to getting a sheath for it and taking it out hunting. Gun Dog makes mention of the choil being to big, I would like to see just a tad deeper more for the index finger to feel secure because it now feels just a tad shallow.

Recommendations for a sheath to dress out the 4-11?

Where that was shot mate there is no chance it is a house cat. Out here they are a real problem. Mt Goddaughter there has her own cats she loves very much as well.

Cats and pigs have probably caused more harm to native species worldwide where they have been introduced by man (only the rat or mouse may be worse)then anything else

Re: 411 vs Rodent 4 - 09/08/13 06:18 AM

There are two rabbits a cat and a fox there...rabbits will be stewed I would guess, the fox and cat pelts will get kept for something.
