Positive: Great format, clean & professional with ease of ordering. It's come a long ways. Also, like Swamp Rat's "Rodents", it seems that SYKCO has a standard predictable line -- the 11 series.

Negative: Significantly higher prices (511 up 33%!), new dog design (I like Rob, but prefer the old dog), and no new knives (or even the 1111 from Blade). Generally, it seems like SYKCO is moving closer to the expensive Busse and away from the budget scrapyard.

Overall it is great. One comment though is when you click on Scrap Yard Knife Company text at the top of this forum it used to take you to the home page. Now it just takes you to a black page with some boxes.

I like the site, although I still prefer the ORIGINAL dog logo, and the price hikes concern me as well. smirk

^^^^^^^^^ Tom nailed it for me. I've pointed a lot of people your way in the past.
They gripe about the no sheaths but often they feel the price to performance was good enough that a sheath was not a big deal to buy. But just that little price raise bites into the sheath budget.

No you lucky dog. Some poor dogs don't even have one

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 12:16 AM

Hahahahaha I tried selling some knives there once. Nobody would buy from me because I have no feedback. They were all asking if I would ship the knives to them before they paid. I understand the concern but couldn't afford to take the hit if they ripped me off

Actually, just about everyone that I have dealt with over there has been great, especially if they are a "regular" poster! wink

Nice site! I'm getting priced out of the market though!

I know. I just couldn't risk it Tom. And that's the general concenses DT.

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 12:48 AM

I too don't care for the price hike, but then again, everything is expensive these days and it's completely understandable for the occasional increase.

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:01 AM

I like the website design....flows better. The integration of the forums seems a bit awkward (not sure why)...

Hard not to agree re: pricing, but steel is expensive and inflation is a pita....so, I get it. Can't read too much from the forum posts though...as the market will speak for itself.

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:01 AM

This was brought up on the swamp forum but I figured I would post it here too.

This is on the new site in the " about our various steels" area ( in the details tab):

"SR-101 Steel is the combination of an extremely fine-grained tool steel and a proprietary multi-step tempering protocol. This process includes the incorporation of a deep cryogenic treatment for grain refinement with the added benefits of differential tempering which add greatly to the overall toughness and strength of what will most certainly prove to be your favorite blade."

Am I reading it wrong or does that say the blades are Differentaially Heat Treated?

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:08 AM

That's what it sounds like. But I thought that only a few past models had that done?
Posted By: Hooplehead

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:28 AM

Im only aware of one past yard model the TT reg and the old rats. They have said in the past diff treating wasn't worth the extra cost to the customer.

So maybe that explains the price hikes? I would be very stoked if the new prices were because the models are now diff treated! My guess is that this is not the case tho...probably just a rise in the cost of SR101 that needed to be reflected in the price of the knives. BUT, if that is the case, how does the Rodent Rucki go from $298 to $358 and the Rattle Hawk didn't increase at all?

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:41 AM

^^^^^^ we are all wondering what's up. There price jump on the 511 was also shocking. We need to start a thread and ask Dan to answer

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:44 AM

they may have purchased new machinery that only affect some products
Some of that manufacturing equipment is expensive

The new site is glitchy. I can get to the forums less than half the time.

I never use the site to get to the forum.

I'm happy to vouch for you if someone wants a reference for you. Just send 'em my way.

Good on ya' D/T! wink

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/01/13 01:57 PM

I did come up with the thought that I could have asked a third party like a trusted mod on the forums the take custody of the knives and then. Send them to the individual after he had received my payment and sent it to me but then its twice the shipping and twice the wait

Like I said, I can vouch for ya. No need to send via a third party wink

looks good. never looked to see what the old store was built on but i have dealt with the current cart before and it's not cheap. also has some really cool features... product videos and all that...

i do hope we see some "vintage logo" t-shirts and some other gear with the old logo. that logo was too nice too abandon.

Re: Thoughts On The New Web Site - 09/02/13 12:26 PM

I like the new website, it offers more to look at.

I think I also prefer the old dog logo. I always thought that a version of it that looked like it had been spray painted with a stencil would look very appropriate for Scrap Yard Knife Company.

.... I don't thik Dan needs to answer anything mate, nor is it really our business, if the knives are too expensive they wont sell but other than that it is a business decision and one, I would suggest, based around increases in base material and other imput prices. None of he Busse Co has had notable price rises in the past few years (though the model they use make this harder to watch however the RMD has been around long enough to see) and like any operation costs very very rarely go down.

New site looks great Dan! Nice to see such a drastic improvement across the board.

However I too miss the original logo. That was a sweet graphic for the brand. smile

I agree with the old logo. The new one, although nice, just looks "Gimmicky to me". I guess I'm just old.
