1st New Project Hints - 09/11/13 11:54 PM

Dogs

I am close to announcing one of the new projects that I have been working on. So in grand Yard tradition here are some hints:

1. The steel is different and found during a dumpster dive
2. Contains C
3. It lacks coloris aurei palpates...I hope I got that right smile

Give it a shot

I remember going through this with the War Dog. I'm totally drawing a blank here.

I think I'm seeing a trend. Didn't the War Dog hint coincide with a break from the forum too? Maybe a creative hiatus? I seem to remember the War Dog break was a vacation or long weekend, though. I don't believe you've taken a break from work this time around.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/12/13 01:25 AM

Coloris is a computer game that was originally released in 1990 for Commodore Amiga. It was later ported to Atari ST.
The game play is similar to Tetris and Columns. Like in Tetris, blocks fall from top of the screen to a well. The blocks consist of three squares of different colours. The blocks cannot be rotated, but the order of the colours can be switched. If three or more squares of same colour are adjacent, they disappear, blocks above them fall down, and may trigger a chain reaction.
The game bears so much resemblance to the more famous Columns game that the developers did not dare to sell the game outside of Finland out of fear of legal action. The game was originally published by Avesoft, a distributor of freeware and shareware disks. The game received some popularity in Finland, however, and the reviews were positive. Jukka Tapanimäki wrote a glowing review to the MikroBitti magazine.

aureus [ˈɔːrɪəs]
n pl aurei [ˈɔːrɪˌaɪ]
(Economics, Accounting & Finance / Currencies) a gold coin of the Roman Empire
[Latin: golden; see aureate]

palpate
vb
(Medicine) (tr) Med to examine (an area of the body) by the sense of touch and pressure
[from Latin palpāre to stroke]

Sooo....it is NOT the orange Res-C earlier discussed.

It's made with 154CM.

Do we have a Muk?
Posted By: Spider-Pig

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/12/13 01:31 AM

It might be. Maybe "C" = vitamin c. Orange?
Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/12/13 01:34 AM

Dumpster dived, meaning stuff around the shop and used before, but not something normally used. C is either in the name or refers to carbon. Although "different" from a dumpster dive COULD be differentially heat treated SR101 as mentioned earlier.

So it's either 154CM or dif treated SR101.

But it lacks an orange handle. That project will be coming later.

Here's hoping for a dif heat treated 11-11 in all black or satin or comp finish grin

Coloris = latin genative singular for color

Aureus = latin for golden yellow

Palpates = To examine or explore by touching an organ or area of the body

Soooo....lacking the golden yellow color exploration of a bodily organ.... Is that really what you're going for here Dan? It's really that last word that's throwing me. Not sure it's exactly what you mean there... wink grin

DT, using your own breakdown it is clearly a Gold handled color (Could Orange be said to be a golden color) knife used to eviscerate game animals, ergo a skinning kinfe. You have your Muk!

Elementary my dear Watson (Or sorry, Dear DT). grin

I can see the 12C27 as it's inexpensive (definitely fits the Scrapyard's ethos!). Is there a benefit to differential heat treating 12C27? I know that it's sometimes done to choppers or throwers but I don't think I've heard of it done to stainless. Just a thought.
Posted By: lazi

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/12/13 05:43 PM

i don't know anything about 12C27 but i googled it an it seems some people have done it. don't know if there's any benefits. i'm just guessing there would be some scraps left from daggers. might make for some nice orange handled scrappers. maybe we are looking at a woodcraft blade.

I'm with ya Brudda.

Besides, as long as the wife takes it easy, she doesn't need to have that "emergency" heart surgery right now. I can probably do a temp fix on the kids’ teeth with some super glue and speed tape. We can hold off on the rabies shot for the dog since the big rabies scare of last week is over with. And I guess the car repairs aren’t that important, I mean the mechanic said I still have 5 good cylinders left. Also, with the summer heat almost over, getting the air conditioner running again is a waste of good knife money. I think we can all agree that getting that wheel for my mother-in-laws wheelchair shouldn’t be too high on the expenditure list.
A man needs to have his priorities right to be able to afford the important things in life.

Steels beginning with the letter C... can I cheat and just say Carpenter?

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/17/13 01:27 AM

Whatever it is, I hope it's a quality budget knife, in the spirit of traditional Scrapyard affordability.

I'm afraid that Dan's hints haven't given much away. Here is the analysis of what's been posted so far.

"The steel is different and found during a dumpster dive"
- So it's not the usual SR 101, not A2 and probably hasn't been used before. The steel was bought by Jerry at auction and forgotten until Dan found it. A hint about the steel is contained in a post written by a Jerry Busse (Boss Hog) fan.

"Contains C"
- Could reference handle or blade material, or maybe Vitamin C.

"It lacks coloris aurei palpates"
- It's not orange handled Res-C.

So Dan, how about some more hints. A theme, perhaps? Bushcraft or Chopper, Steak Knife or Dagger? What is it?

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/17/13 02:16 AM

Pitman, you sure got it right about the Boys getting the heat treat right.
Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/17/13 02:52 AM

Tom, you are correct. Jerry bought a bunch of 5160 at auction and used it to let some of the guys in the shop practice grinding. Many of the blanks he had cut were bought by Justin Gingrich--legend is Justin bought all 700--and those blanks started the Ranger RD series. I own one of the original RD9s made from a Busse blank. It is one of the blades I will probably be buried with. Tom, unless I'm very much mistaken, I believe you have one too grin Justin did a fantastic job with the heat treat. If there were still some of those blanks kicking around, Dan would sure be able to make one heckuva blade! If that's what we're talking, it's gonna be a nice big chopper grin
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/17/13 03:27 AM

D/T, you're right about Justin making good knives, as mine can attest to! wink I'm sure Dan can do a fantastic job on them if that indeed is the steel. smile
Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/17/13 03:51 AM

So...to recap: Black Res-C 5160 chopper. I'd suggest differentially heat treated, but I think I'd be pushing my luck grin

I never have to worry about that building blowing away! Also, ATS-34, 154CM in the late 80's when you could only get it in 3/16" thick, very narrow bars 1.25" wide I think), BG-42 sometime between '89 - '91 . . . long before anyone else had used it, that I'm aware of., Homemade Damascus (0-1 and 1018), some other exotic steels I'd have to look up to remember, including a Maraging Cobalt/Nickel "350 Vasco Max" or something like that. . . .Weird stuff, you simply baked it at 900 degrees for 9 hours and it would harden out at 58-60 Rc with no chance of rusting. . . I was very fortunate in the steel department mainly due to the fact that Koncor industries is within 8 miles of my shop and they are, or were, a division of Latrobe steel and I believe Crucible. I knew the guys at the plant pretty well, so I got a shot at anything new that came in.

I would constantly go there in search of the perfect steel. . .But I could never seem to find exactly what I was looking for. . . . . .back then.

Happily, I haven't been there since 1997!!! wink

Sethro, so from that old post you dug up, it could be just about anything! Something that HASN'T been used though would take 440C out of the mix...along with D-2, A-2, and 154CM. I could really get into a BG-42 blade--I've got a Buck Zipper in that and it performs like a lot of the so-called super steels--but sounds like Jerry used THAT one before too.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/27/13 02:42 AM

The muzzle brake will be replaced with something else, but I don't know what with yet. This one is garbage. I will also shorten the barrel to 18 inches. I live very close to a reputable FAL smith.

Yes, they're piston driven.

Trigger pull is long and heavy compared to a good AR trigger. Linear and smooth.

The ergos are good, though I will replace the furniture at some point.

I wish I was set up to reload. Maybe now I have a good excuse to make the investment. Those are TTSX bullets, right?
Posted By: Ishikawa

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/27/13 02:52 AM

If simply going for a flash hider...take a hard look at the Vortex. I suspect they probably make one for to fit the thread pitch of the FAL (do you know if it's 5/8x24?...I suspect not).

Yes, TTSX's. Animals hate them laugh Thus far performance, both impact and precision, validated up to 450yds in my little 18" barreled rifle.
Posted By: Spider-Pig

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/27/13 03:06 AM

I have no idea what the thread pitch is. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check into it (just checked, Vortex does make one for the FAL. Brownell's has them on sale).

I remember you posting pics of that 450 yard hog. Very nice.

Dan, get us back on topic with a pic!

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/27/13 11:19 PM

Andy, curious why you'd recommend the birdcage over the vortex? Never seen these in action...but most bird cages don't come close in flash suppression.

Randy, it's a UGSW Kukri. They go by another name now...I'll look'em up and pm you.
Posted By: Andy the Aussie

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 09/28/13 03:21 AM

R1A1 was Century playing on the South African R1 designation, the kit your rifle started as was an L1A1 (Brit or Aussie depending on the markings). The metric receiver is just what it was built on of course. Birdman is the Gunsmith .... wink The F1 flash supressor is a limited production variation to the standard L1A1 flash supressor, it also acts as a MB to a degree, much shorter than the origial issue version while retaining the working properties, it also allows the use of the standard Commonwealth pattern bayonets (sould you need to put "cold steel up 'em") .... laugh wink

Went and shot some trap with it, shoots really well. Played 3 games

12/25
18/25
21/25

Pretty good for my first time ever shooting trap, hoping to go back this weekend, maybe shoot Sporting Clays

Figured I'd add a pic, for anyone who didn't see it before

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/18/13 09:37 AM

How did the other colors work out with respect to getting soiled or dirty? I have only had black res-c. I'm pretty sure that it would probably clean up easily but my hands get pretty dirty when I am in the bush. I guess my knife handle would too.

The orange would be great because I sometimes put a little fluorescent yellow or orange tape on stuff like knives so that I can find them after I fall from not looking where I am walking. :-P
Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/18/13 12:40 PM

I've had black, muddy, and sage. None is the worse for wear. I imagine the lighter might show dirt more (my sage muk stays in the kitchen so not much dirt per se, just lots of blood), but Res C seems to clean up pretty good. Besides, it's a knife and meant to be used and get a little dirty grin
Posted By: sumoj275

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/18/13 11:38 PM

My gray handled Res-C gets dirty but a little dish detergent and water takes care of that.
Posted By: adnj

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/19/13 01:47 PM

The res-c seems to be hydrophobic but sometimes stuff just sticks onto the surface.

Glad to know that a lighter color cleans up easily.

Even though I have hard-used one of SY knives for years, the handle doesn't have one blemish on it. Can't say that for some wooden handled knives that I have.
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/19/13 07:30 PM

Res-C is good stuff! wink
Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 10/20/13 02:20 AM

It is. It DOES, however, have a tendency to get chewed up if it's in a tight-fitting kydex sheath, depending on the design.

Guess not. I am old enough to have been on the Howdy Doody show as a member of the Peanut Gallery in the early 1950's. grin My parents took me to New York to go on the show. It was my favorite at the time.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/03/13 04:28 AM

I take that back. I could really use a 6-7" narrow blade, like a Boss Jack or DSSF but with a WD or mudder handle. There's been more than one occasion where I or SF have had to dispatch a deer with our knives (either WD or RMD so far, although once with a 4" blade). That extra inch or two would really help speed the process--especially when you've got an angry injured deer with antlers.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/19/13 03:01 AM

It is what it is. I can't control when a company puts out a product or if they make announcements so I'll try not to stress over it. I've had to move into Christmas mode. Hopefully, if it's something that really appeals to me it will be around after the holidays. If not, I guess I'll have to miss it and hope to pick up a cheap user on the forums frown

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/19/13 01:17 PM

I agree with Tom. True Dan doesn't keep us "In the loop" the way we want, but if he did we would know EVERY step of the process and there would be NO "Surprises".

There is some kind of reason that we don't know about, as is his choice.

Like Tom said, Keep The Faith.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/19/13 11:43 PM

If the Yard only produced one knife every couple of years I wouldn't mind, provided that policy is made clear from the onset then we couldn't have cause to complain.

What upsets me are the false promises and total lack of communication.

Even if it was a " Sorry guys the next offering won't be for another 6 months "......providing at that 6 month mark we received another product as promised then that would be fine.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/20/13 12:13 AM

My problem is that it seems to continue trending in a direction I don't understand. I don't have to understand it to agree with it...I'm just trying to provide feedback to the YARD.

There was once a thread where Skunk listed up the timelines between releases. I would bet we are reaching some new records...

Posted By: DogTired

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/20/13 04:57 AM

I like the Yard. There's good folks here. If there were never another new release, I'd still be ok.

In no way trying to sound rude or insensitive, but if Dan doesn't provide more feedback, I'm ok with that too. Eventually new knives will arrive. When they come, the come. Yeah, it's frustrating to not get more info when we're told info will be forthcoming, but at the end of the day, Dan IS a businessman, and I have a hard time believing he'd be doing something to purposefully anger his most loyal customers. I don't think the lack of his active participation lately is malicious.

This is a great forum for us to come and chat and whatnot, but I don't get the sense that it's AS important a part of his daily (weekly) routine/personal community as it is to some of us. Again, not a slight against Dan and if it's true, it in no way offends me. I like Dan. It's nice to hear from him when he checks in. He's "one of the dogs." But folks here all have different levels of participation and that's ok.

As sparse as the commo has been lately, it's still pretty amazing to me that the owner of a company like this is still AS personally involved with the customers as Dan is. It seems that Scrapyard is growing as a business (along with the whole of Busse-dom) so I suspect that we are likely going to see decreasing communications from the head honcho from here on out. The company is growing, it remains family owned, the owners are intimately involved with planning and production, so if something has to give, it makes sense that his participation here would be among the first.

I think the longer folks have been on the forum, the harder that shifting reality might be to take (and understandably so). I've not been here more than three years, but already I can see that it's no longer the same company it was when I first found the Yard. They've moved to computer-based production, simplified the standard steel lines to INFI and SR101 (I assume to achieve better economies of scale), invested greatly in both the production side and the user interface side, and totally overhauled the business model to make knives available longer--seemingly permanently--to make Bussekin steel more reachable to the general knife-buying public. All this, to me, indicates they are undergoing rapid business expansion (or are at least trying to), and I'd assume there are likely going to be some serious growing pains--like lessened communication--associated with this expansion.

To me it's neat that they are STILL trying to make it interesting and exciting for collectors and rabid knife-o-philes with shows, ganzaaas, and special occassional offerings. Like I said, I hope I'm in a place where I can do a new blade when it's released (and if it fills a niche), but if not, c'est la vie.

I am of course wildly speculating on all of this, but it makes sense to me. I'm trying to be zen about it and it eases the pain in my heart a little to think like that (sniff sniff) wink smile

Most excellent post DT (You too Tom). I feel the same way be don't have the to express it in such eloquent words. Thank you for expressing what I believe is our sentiments.

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/20/13 02:33 PM

DT, you and I are on the same page. I too have moved on the Christmas things and another knife isn't probably going to happen now. It is a shame but the money I had set back for a knife from my favorite group was spent on other stuff. It is hard for me to justify keeping money back for something that may not be coming for a long time while I have a family to take care of. Life is a bunch of decisions and unfortunately some decisions have to be made that we don't like.

Yeah most of what you say is true, I love the product that Dan puts out, I just think he has some really great fans on here that deserve a little better when it comes to updates. If he is busy or has personal issues that is fine we completely understand that but is a few words too much to ask ?

I will add that I truly hope all is well with Dan and his family, we are always there for moral support should he need us !

Re: 1st New Project Hints - 11/22/13 02:54 PM

I haven't been here that long, but I remember a time when there was nothing available to purchase, sometimes for months at a time. When I came in this morning, there were seven (7!) knives available to purchase; some with multiple options. Four were under $100. Holy smokes! If you have knife money to spend, grab one and put it in the drawer. This stuff is just like money; you can always convert back to cash for that new offering, and sometimes, at a profit. They are at a great price point for gifts, barter, whatever. I like this model much better.

After a while you get the impression that the lack of information is not a slight to the dogs. Just part of the way business is done around here. A little build-up never hurts a product sell. Certainly not the way many people would like things to go, but it is the way it goes.

The fans forgive all when the knife is finally released.
