2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/03/15 05:25 PM

Prepare yourselves Dogs!!!

The Yard of Scrap is back!!!!

It has been far too long since the Yard has produced a new model!!

This new model will most certainly help to make up for that!!

Rising from the ASHes of the nuclear dumpster comes the first of many to come new blades for the Yard.

Built on the shoulders of the great, this collective design delivers the power of a legendary blade fused with the grip comfort and performance that has made our knives the stuff of legends!

I had to beg, borrow, and steal steel to bring this project together.

I begged for machine time, borrowed the blade design, and stole the fixtures and steel to make this rabid dog into a reality.

I took a Scrap Yard Resiprene handle, an ASH 1 blade, and a bottle of Kentucky's finest bourbon and threw it all into a nuclear powered garbage disposal!! Three days later this rabid dog emerged.

I am proud to introduce the TRASH 1 (The Resiprene Anniversary Steel Heart 1)

Long live the brotherhood of the Yard!!!

Dan

Steel: 1095

Hardness: 58-60 Rc

Bevel: Flat Saber

So Dan, how does this work?

Is it a limited number you are selling, or will it still be up in two weeks?

And by two weeks, I actually mean two weeks smile

Hmm.. interesting, now to figure out if it has a place in the stable as a workhorse. 58-60 rc is interesting, not sure I have used 1095 hardened that high before. Debating on this...

done properly 1095 can be excellent in a knife
there are a couple of companies out there that do it well
I am sure that these will be among the best
however $140 US is $185 canadian
With shipping it will be well over $200 cdn and I cannot justify the expense right now
I spent too much money on toys the last 4 or 5 months
As always timing is everything

And not that long ago they were at par...

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/04/15 06:12 AM

58-60 RC is a fairly common range for a lot of custom makers to run 1095, I think toughness is the last thing I'll be worrying about. Not that I'd be surprised if they don't end up a little softer. The KaBar BK2 is 56-58 by some sources, 58-60 by others, but a freaking tank by all. I'm looking forward to running this next to some ESEE and Becker blades. And next to the BG ASH-1. And seeing what Andy has to say about the comparison with the INFI ASH-1. And .. touching it. Calling it dirty names then saying I was just kidding. Just because it's TRASHy doesn't mean I can't respect it in the morning.

I kinda want to drink the kool-aid and go for the CG SOB- I'm just not sure I see the benefit to price point. I really want to jump on a Fiddleback production Camp knife if I can find a reasonable price to get it modded for the hidden lanyard. And it would just be weird not to order Battle Horse Knives monthly special. Aaaaaand Survive! needs more of my money for about 4 more preorders (seriously, have you guys seen the specs on the GSO-12?!?!?!?!). That being said I can easily see all of that being passed over for a couple more weeks for a 2nd TRASH-1. I won't need a second, and I won't keep a safe queen, but I'm stoked enough to want to put my money where my mouth is and support this release as much as my meager wallet can.

The price point looks good. The design is obviously solid. I don't even hate that it has a choil, it's right at that weird medium size where I can take or leave one. The only thing I don't care for too much is that the choil is square. I don't understand the thought process. My finger isn't perfectly round, but it darn sure isn't square. The choil on the 411 made me not love what was otherwise perfect, the square choil torpedo'd it for me.

As much as I'm tempted I think I'm going to pass. No doubt it'll be a great knife and an excellent value, but 1/4" is just too thick for my liking in a 6" knife.

I also wish that it was in 3/16 inch. But with the Warranty they give I can see them wanting to stack the odds in the House's favor. Maybe they've spent to much time in Vegas. wink

I was hoping for 3/16" also. Though this is a very worthy successor to the 711, I believe.

Yeah, this 30% exchange rate is rough! Actually considering selling some of my extra blades to take advantage of it...

Love to see what Dan has managed to squeeze out of 1095 via the Busse heat treatment though...

I feel the same way. The announcement that the yard would be using 1095 really turned me off. My only hope was for a substantial price reduction. This steel and this price point just don't do it for me.

I have a BGASH-1 on the way so I'm probably gonna pass this one up. I would like to know what handle it has the 511 or 711 handle size? I would have been more interested with maybe a different handle, mudders?

With the recent release of Busse in SR-101 and now SY in 1095, I can only (depressingly) wonder if the days of affordable SR-101 knives are gone forever.

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/06/15 11:31 AM

Wonder how the performance would be compared to a ESEE of similar size?
ESEE you get a sheath with and I hear they have a good warranty so I wonder how they would be if you did a price point comparison.... And testing of course.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/06/15 11:33 AM

BUT ESEE doesn't have the the Res-c Handles. And it may be nit picking, but I don't like the finish on the ESEE blades.

Posted By: gun dog

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/06/15 06:44 PM

Well that's why we need a side by side comparison... My buddy just got a jungles and I want to have a chop off with him and see which knife is better my911 or his ESEE
Posted By: GeneralDelivery

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/06/15 09:34 PM

I would guess that the Junglas would chop better due to its thinner stock. The Junglas would have to be sharpened more often but should sharpen easier. The Junglas also comes with a nice sheath system. The 911 is tougher(due to the steal, and thickness). The ResC would absorb shock better then the micarta used by esee. The Junglas is cheaper. Take your pick based on what is most important to you.
Posted By: GeneralDelivery

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/06/15 09:36 PM

The junglas is also a tad longer.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but this is about how I feel, too. I also have a SOD and the latest hollow ground Regulator, so something near those in size out of 1095 isn't quite pushing me past the "sold" point on this one. The TRASH1 is a sweet looking knife and I've been tempted, but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna hold off on this.

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/08/15 12:21 AM

Not stoked.....yet!

I have to say I am a huge fan of 5160 and the thought of a Scrapyard knife in that steel was a dream come true.

But 1095?

I am sure it will be awesome but it was the steel that brought me to Busse and Kin in the 1st place. SR77, SR101, INFI all pretty special stuff.

1095 is not a an expensive or impressive steel. It is in thousands of knives from hundreds of companies. I have seen BK and Ontario overcharge for it for years while countless numbers of their blades have snapped and chipped out on youtube an forums.

I am not saying that this isn't a good knife or the the most amazing 1095 rendition ever seen. Who knows? It could be!

But when I look at the price of the Schrade SCHF series and the durability issues of a companies like BK and Ontario I have issues.

Time will tell.

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/08/15 02:40 AM

Well, it's not that I don't want to get one, it's a race to see which happens first, the TRASH gets taken out or sufficient income arrives. If the TRASH can stay on the curb & hold through the weekend I'll have a shot at one if everything comes together on my end...

Call it SR95.. blammo, done.

I think you'd only be likely to see an improvement in 5160 over 1095 is if it was a larger 'choppy' type blade. From what I understand 1095 has higher abrasion resistance and 5160 is tougher.

SY95 would work too since it is SY exclusive. wink

+1

I'm all for Regulator handles on big and/or long knives and WarDog/B4 handles on small or medium knives.

I hope for a 1311LE with satin INFI and Regulator handle, and a skinny SYKCO styled HG55 shaped blade with the WarDog handle. I'm all for re-release of the 460 in ELMAX.

I ordered TRASH1 but would have ordered multiples with either of the other handles.

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/12/15 04:35 PM

18" Dogchete--1/8" thick SR95 stock, Regulator hand!e

15" GMOAD (Grandmother of all Dogfathers)--1/4" SR77 or SR95 if that makes it more feasible.

8" DogSquatch--1/4" 101 or SR95 stock 3.5" wide with a large Basic handle (is it just me, or was the 511 handle smaller than normal?)

6" Scrap Roach--3/8" big ol' roach-belly blade.

16" SCRawk--3/16" 1095 stock SCRap Hawk with a cord wrapped handle

5" Anorexic Elmuk with 1/8" Elmax stock and a mudder handle

6" Dogfish--1/8" Elmax stock filet knife with a mudder handle

26" Mutt Mace--well, just a big spikey club...maybe with or without chain extension. Why not?

Just off the top of my head...

I've always wanted a nice Mud Mutt-ish size fixed blade SY Elmax knife. There are Scrapmaxes listed in the Scrapyard specs thread but I don't think they should be, because they were never available for order from the website. Any knife not available for order from the website is some kind of one-off Ganza unobtainium as far as I'm concerned.

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/13/15 12:24 AM

There's a lot of blades listed in the specs thread that never made it to the store. The Scrapmax is nice, but not what I would consider a hard use blade. Apparently Dan doesn't think so either since they are not warrantied for life IIRC. Blade is just too thin. Works great for processing deer though, which is my primary use for it. Can't remember if someone proxied that for me or if I got it in a Ganzaaaa....if it was the former, thanks! My memory sucks...

Re: 2 Weeks Is UP...Next Offer - 09/19/15 05:12 AM

That is my famous (or infamous depending on how you look at it) Negrito Hunting Bolo. 9 inches of leaf spring steel with melted down brass cases for the guard and water buffalo and soda can aluminum for the handle. Cost me all of $2.50 WAY back in 1975! You wouldn't believe what I have used it for. It's been used so much that I don't think it will rust any more. When it would start to rust I would just start jabbing in into the ground until the rust was gone.
