If you could only have one knife, what would it be

If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/24/19 12:31 AM

Havn't done this in a while, but if you could have one fixed blade, what would it be? What about if you could only have one folder?

Fixed blade = Busse NMFSH Varient
Folder = Benchmade 760 (Bob Lum folding tanto)

Those are my two choices, try to get some pics of them up sometime.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/24/19 02:54 AM

Fixed blade... the S5, S6 or maybe even the 511. BUT I would cheat and also have my Muppy. grin And of course, the Wardog would be a contender as well. Decisions decisions.

Sure am glad this is all hypothetical.

Folder... Man that IS a tough one. I would have to pick from the Emerson cqc15, the Spyderco Military or PM2 probably. OR if I wanted a bruiser maybe the ZT 0909. BUT I could also pick from the large GTI tactical folder or maybe even the Emerson Rendition or Patriot.

Now IF I were going for pure brawn it would have to be the ZT 0909 and then probably the large GTI Tactical Folder followed closely by the Emerson Rendition and Patriot.

This is as close as I can get to "There can be only one" grin

Now IF we are talking Tactical knives, the Scrapyard S6 or the TaliWhacker. Even though I really like the S6 I would probably go with the Tali just because it would also I feel do double duty (better) than the S6. Meaning that it would also serve as a good although large "Survival" blade. But this would of course necessitate the inclusion of a GOOD smaller fixed or folder. Which brings us back full circle.

VERY difficult to answer, but maybe the B11 and Busse folder that Jerry had at the Blade show. Talk about RARE!!! grin

I would choose my beloved S4 and an Emerson, any Emerson.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/24/19 10:49 PM

Holy Sophies Choice Batman!

Fixed- Camp Tramp...or Howling Rat

Folder- Emerson Tiger...or ZT 0562..or Spyderco Gale Bradley 2

It's too hard to choose!

Is strange I went with the Tiger though as I rarely carry it, but it's a good all-rounder than others I have I guess

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/25/19 01:54 AM

If it's any knife, then a BWM (INFI) and a ZT... Almost any ZT.

If we're limited to what we've got on hand, then the Chopweiller and my Gerber auto.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/25/19 02:51 AM

I was going with the knives I own. DT has a good idea though, My BWM would fit in nicely and pair that along with oh maybe an my 511, S5 or a 411 (but remember I would cheat and also have my Muppy).
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/25/19 02:54 AM

But IF you want to go with something similar, the BWM and War dog would be a good pair.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/25/19 03:03 AM

Oh my gosh! I completely forgot my Chophouse lean cut! THAT would be the one. I am already familiar with that blade style (having one like it since 1975 or '76). I'm talking about my Negrito hunting Bolo here. The chophouse is VERY similar to it in the blade profile.

So, smaller blades would remain a toss up between the 511, S5, 411 and the Wardog. But Man would I want my Muppy. I just LOVE that knife! Now if Dan would just make another Mud Puppy with a 4.25-4.50 inch blade with the same choil and grip...Knife heaven.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/26/19 12:16 AM

Yes, its a tough choice. After I posted this i thought of my 2nd and 3rd choices too LOL.

2nd: SY Dogfather LE and Emerson CQC mini 15

3rd: Busse Basic 11 and Benchmade 9051 AFO automatic.

Probably so BC. A LOT of folks just call it an S4.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/26/19 12:35 AM

I have one knife (actually both the large and small in the green handle) Gingrich Tactical Knives GTI FOLDER.

https://www.personaldefenseworld.com/2014/05/the-gingrichkizer-gti-folding-knife/

It is a bruiser! But I would put it up against any other "Survival" folder out there. Oh and this one IS special. I ordered it direct from him and it is engraved "SkunkHunter JYD#105" ! So needless to say I don't foresee ever getting rid of them. And the smaller one is prefect for a Sheeple Friendly blade, even more so than my Spyderco Para 3.

B/C, it IS heavy duty. wink

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/27/19 02:36 AM

BC, if you are talking about the GTI folder, it is VERY heavy duty. It also carries surprisingly well. I would put it up against any other "Survival" folder you could name. AND boy does it sharpen up nice. That S35VN steel is amazing.

If you are looking for a robust heavy duty EOTW folder that won't cost you the price of a new set of tires, I HIGHLY recommend the Gingrich GTI folder. The small one is a nice sweet blade as well in it's own right.
Posted By: banana-clip

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/28/19 12:55 AM

Yes, it does look like a heavy duty overbuilt folder.

I like the looks of it too.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 09/28/19 03:10 AM

I think it is nice looking as well. I really like the green color and the "Sculpting" around the outside really makes it look nice.

Tough consideration!

If I was selecting in peace time ..

Fixed Blade = Swamp Rat RMD with G10 Handle Scales
Folding Blade = Spyderco PM2 DLC

If I was selecting for a "run out the door and live like Grizzly Adams" scenario ....

Fixed Blade = Busse FBM
Folding Blade = Spyderco PM2 DLC

You and your Spyderco's! wink

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/01/19 02:36 AM

I still think that I would go with my:

1. Chophouse lean cut (now that I remembered I have one).
2. Really a BIG "Mash Up". The afore mentioned Spyderco PM2 is a REALLY good folder. BUT, I think that (unless I change my mind) I would go with a more brawny blade, ala the GTI Folder (large) or perhaps my ZT O909 or the Emerson rendition or Patriot. All thick bladed brawny blades. And I guess the Emerson CQC10 would also be in the running.

I have done a lot of "Survival Shelter" building with a blade VERY similar to the Chophouse, My oft talked about Negrito Hunting Bolo
[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]IMG_5126 by Randy, on Flickr

Best $2.50 blade I have ever bought! I have also killed, skinned and cut up a goat with it. And have used it as a draw knife, hatchet. Well you get the idea. I walked around "The Boonies" of the Philippines with my ex brother in law with that as my only blade (he used a traditional Philippine Bolo, actually a parang). I have knives I have that cost over 100 times what this one did, but it is still my favorite all time knife, bar none. You wouldn't believe what you can do with a blade that you are very familiar with if you need to. A WISE survivalist (or anybody really who wants to know what blade they should use in certain "areas") just watch what "The Locals" use.

And here is the GTI Folder in my hand. I wear a Medium glove and they are usually sorta snug on my fat hands.
[Linked Image from live.staticflickr.com]GTI 2 by Randy, on Flickr

The GTI Folder (Kizer’s model Ki 4416A2) is a robust knife with a 3.5-inch, drop-point blade fashioned from CPM-S35VN. The blade has a thickness of 0.157 inches and is hollow ground. The liners of this folder are 6AI-4V titanium and have green G10 handle scales. The liner-lock mechanism provides security once the knife is opened with the use of the dual thumb studs. The use of titanium assures that even with an overall length of 8.65 inches, the knife weighs only 7.5 ounces. The 1.5-inch width of the blade gives the general appearance that the blade is shorter than its 3.5 inches.

Might as well go whole hog on this post. Just so there is NO doubt as to who this belongs to...

I THINK it is actually named the Gingrich Kizer GTI Tactical Folder. and it is Kizer’s model Ki 4416A2

That looks like their (one of) autos? Don't think I would want an auto knife for an TEOTWAWKI blade. Other than that It looks like it would be a nice using blade.
Posted By: banana-clip

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/03/19 01:03 AM

Its an Benchmade AFO, its a heavy duty knife and the strongest auto knife I every used. Its not the typical el cheapo automatic knife. The spring is so strong if you dont have a good grip on it, it feels like it would fly out of your hand. I wouldn't feel under-knifed with it in the average fantacy TEOTWAKI situation.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/03/19 01:08 AM

I have an OX forge (Charles Ochs?) Auto like that. I HAVE dropped it a couple times when that 4 inch blade fires.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/03/19 01:11 AM

I knew Benchmade mad a really sweet Auto. I have owned three German ones and they are not to bad, but still the typical not really to sturdy blades. I wouldn't want to have to use one of them to defend myself.

On a different front, I DO have 5 "Butterfly" knives. I got my first Butterfly knife back in I think '74(cheapie when I was stationed in the Philippines). My first "Good one" I think was around 1981 and is marked BALI-SONG, so it actually predates Benchmade and even Pacific Cutlery! I actually have two marked like that, the second one being a serialized edition )55 of 200 (4 inch blade)and is a Bowie style (wouldn't Tom Be proud). The rest were made by Pacific Cutlery. Haven't bought any since they changed over to Benchade so I guess my last would would have to have been made prior to 1988.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/03/19 01:20 AM

I actually have one of their first Bali-song knives, the Model 68 it has been used and abused and has lost about a half inch of blade when I snapped it off digging out some cracked asphalt from a runway somewhere. I was able to get it more or less re-profiled and still have it. All the Pins are just peened over and NOT ground off flush. When it is not locked up it rattles more than a model T going over a log bridge.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/03/19 01:27 AM

I am not a fan on USING blades that have a recurve to them. On defensive blades I like them quite well as they will help you "Stay in the cut" as the forward "Belly" will sort of catch what ever is is you are cutting and not let it slip out the way a more conventional straight blade will, or can.

Just me. Nothing wrong with recurves, I just prefer them on smaller or folder defensive blades.

I know Tom. But for regular type knife work I just prefer a conventional type blade.

Hmmm. I wonder if a DeReg handle would fit on the Lean Chophouse?
Posted By: banana-clip

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/05/19 12:13 PM

I never used to like recurves on chopping type knives, but now I really like them. For choppers, they can really cut well. Just like I never liked tanto blades, but now on certain folders I like them as long as they arent the tantos that are almost a 90 degree angle, those are worthless IMO
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 10/07/19 04:30 AM

I know recurves are really nice for cutting almost anything. BUT I just prefer a straight blade most of the time.

My post did not post? I highly recommend both the large and small folders. You can buy them from Justin or Kizer(as I think the GTI Hunter). For a "Survival Folder" or just a general all around use do almost anything folder they would be hard to beat in my opinion. Of course I can't speak for the vast majority of "Survival" blades out there, the GTI folders (both the large and the small one) are really great knives.

Folding Blade ... Spyderco PM2

...the OP didn't say wouldn't couldn't have an axe or hatchet wink therefore my fixed blade doesn't have to be huge.

Its not the size of the knife ... its how long you can use it in the field.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 02/07/20 03:41 AM

More I think about it the more I am pretty positive if I could have ONE and ONLY one blade it would be as I mentioned before my Chophouse Lean cut. Like I've said before I have a VERY similar blade shaped knife like the chophouse and I have used it for just about anything you could think of. Was it always ideal for what I was doing, no, but it did get the job done. And THAT is what matters.

If you are going into a TEOTWAWKI situation you will need something that you can cut down that is more than 3 or 4 inches thick. AND you will need to process a lot of wood for one thing or another. Can a shorter blade do it, sure it can. Bushcrafters prove that all the time. But a larger blade can do it better. Is a big blade good for skinning out game animals or fish? Not really it's forte, but it can accomplish the task, and once again THAT is what is important.

All this being said I WOULD still like to have my Muppy with me. grin My Moderator Mud Mutt or 411 would work but I really really like the Mud Puppy.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 02/07/20 03:44 AM

Now if we are talking folders:

The Justin Gingrich GTI Large Folder. The ZT 0909 would also be in the running. But I would lean more toward the GTI. Man I like that knife. I must as I have both the large and small model. If the small only had a 2.75 inch blade instead of the 2.50 it would be a lot better IMHO.

Heck, I would probably give up any of my emersons, Spydercos ZT and MAYBE even one of me Chris Reeve folders.

Gary, do you also wear suspenders to help keep your pants up??? smile

With a good belt you don't need a set of suspenders Tom. smile

I keep it in the Maxped Falcon 2 pack I use to haul stuff from my house to my vehicle. Pack has a trauma kit, water bottle, etc.

Hahaha.

Tom, as Randy said my gun belt is more than enough. A lot has to do with body shape and belt quality. You can see in the picture that my belt has taken a beating over the past 6 years. Need a new one.

I actually feel like I’m forgetting something if I’m not wearing that set up, and I don’t even feel the 1911.

Well fitted holsters help.

It has it's advantages. You can make idiotic mistakes in public and just blame it on your Old age/lack of memory. Works a lot more often than you would think. grin

I'm going to keep it to "Only 1 Scrapyard"... (and I'm down to only this one now... all the other pups have been sold or given away to be loved on by new owners).

Scrapyard Alpha Dog BIG DC...

If it's all I had on me when everything went south, it'd do... yup, it'd DO!!!

As for folders (since I'm going with the AD6), I'd say this one would be a perfect pairing to the big dog...

And this is how they get toted around...

Oh man, I'm with you Rich. Can't wait until Dan gets the Mini Tali-Whacker formalized and finally releases it. Man THAT will be a GREAT "Combat" blade, able to fulfill a multitude of tasks for both those who are and have served. Oh and also for those that have never been in the Military or Law Enforcement.

With the MTW (Mini Tali-Whacker) and a Chophouse you could do just about anything.

Upon further reflection, I'd like to revise my answer to a butter knife.

If one hasn't tried Kerry Gold Irish salted butter, one hasn't lived.

Our kinfolk to the west must have very happy cows as their butter is brilliant.

Thanks EM, it is pretty much the perfect size for a general purpose combat/camp blade. It's light weight too!!!

You Brits don't even think a knife blade should lock open. Next thing we know you will be saying that they don't need points either!

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 03/09/20 06:25 AM

I thought they were trying to ban knives in England, at least pointed ones. I guess you all will have to start using plastic flatware instead. smile

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 03/09/20 08:58 PM

You're correct Tom. I read somewhere a couple years ago that they DID want to ban knives with points. Evidently some brain dead chef said that knives did not need a point to be useful.

Re: If you could only have one knife, what would it be - 03/09/20 09:55 PM

You yanks just don't understand the aristocracy of Great Britain. We haven't need of knives. We have man servants for such trivial tasks as "cutting".

As for cardio-logical impact of Irish butter. That lot has been trying to kill us off for years militarily. Now you've revealed their seductive plan to slowly kills us with healthy pats of lovely butter on our crumpets. I say, its a fine way to go, you know.
