Mega Ratweiler - 02/08/20 10:27 AM

Ok so Busse Kin hasn’t made any that interests me for a long time but that sharpened I beam they are calling the Mega Ratweiler has definitely got my attention! How rust resistant is the ST101 comp finish? G10 or micarta for hard use? And finally who all is getting one?

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/08/20 12:07 PM

I really like the looks of it, but .350 is too thick for me for that size of blade. A maroon micarta handle would really look sharp on whatever finish you may get.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/08/20 01:16 PM

Same here ... not much has appealed to me for a long time but the Fatweiler has caught my attention.

SR101 in CF is going to rust.

I’m considering a coated unit.

Looks like everything I wanted the Regulator to be but wasn’t.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/08/20 01:17 PM

I’m thinking black with black micarta or G10.

Both handles are fine for hard use.

ETA: don’t know if I want to pay $45 for the G10. It doesn’t increase the usefulness of the knife 15%.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/08/20 01:44 PM

Wish the Busse Brothers would just offer the classics (in SR101 and INFI) as standard / always available items.

NMSFNO
FBM
ASH (don’t care which thickness but prefer LE)
AD or Mean Street
TG (don’t care which thickness or grind)

Scrapper 4
Scrapper 5
DF
SOD
Yard Keeper CG

RMD
Swamp Warden

I feel like these knives are the reason for the following, and the best knives in their respective classes.

I don’t regret selling most of the knives I sold but I do regret a couple . This is one of them ...

I really want a replacement DF in SR101 and I’d buy 4 or 5 Scrapper 5s for various kits, vehicles, etc.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/09/20 01:39 PM

I pulled out my Bussekin options and decided to pass on the Mega Weiler. I’d like an 8” Rat, but not at 0.350” thick. I also struggle with hot spots on the finger bumper Rat handles.

Here are my options (didn’t pull my Warden out of my survival kit):

I’d LOVE a Dog or Rat version of my AD-BG.

I’d put one in every survival kit, and my wife’s purse.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/09/20 01:44 PM

... especially thinned out a little.

Or even better ... Yard Keeper CG. The YKCG was my 3rd favorite and would be brilliant in SR101. Great little hunting or bushcrafting blade.
Posted By: Endeavour Morse

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/09/20 01:45 PM

Stick a Mudder handle on an anorexic FFG SR101 Yard Keeper and you’d have a near perfect knife.

ETA: Offer a LE version with satin INFI and convex edge and my CC would melt from over use....because I’d buy 4 CG and 4 LE!!!

I got to help test chop with it. The first couple of swings were done with everything I had...wow what a design...the 2x4 did not stand a chance. I then hit it with the lightest swing I could without dropping the knife. The blade sunk almost as far as the hardest swing,,, unbelievable is all I can say. For its size it is surprisingly manageable and easy to carry.

Don't get me wrong its no 5" EDC. Its a beast with refinement maybe even a hint of social graces would be my description

For what its worth

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/10/20 08:51 PM

I wish we could get some more comparison photos. I'd like to see the whole knife compared to other similar sized knives (looking down upon the spine). Yesterday I handled my 711 a lot trying to figure out if I'd want a nearly 50% thicker blade.

In the end I'll likely wait to see what else comes out. I do like 8" blades as the best "general purpose large" knife. Anything less than 8" is a little short while 9" plus is a little cumbersome (beyond chopping).

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/11/20 05:39 AM

I really like that they are making this, but it's just way to thick for my liking. I have a knife close to that thickness and just don't ever carry it, to heavy for my personal liking.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/19/20 02:02 AM

Yeah I’ve got a tan and tan custom shop sus scrofa so I’m looking for something different that will pop but not add the extra of G10 or the rust issues of polished.
Posted By: SkunkHunter

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/19/20 04:21 AM

IF you use it, it won't rust. Not being a turd here, but honest. I have my beloved Negrito Hunting Bolo that I have talked about many times. IF it ever started rusting (when it was relatively new) and started rusting I would just jab it into the ground a half dozen times or so all the way to the hilt, wipe it on a cloth and sheath it. It finally got where it is VERY rust resistant. It is nothing more than a knife made from a vehicle spring and sharpened. NO extra heat treat of any kind. Just shaped, sharpened and ya got a knife.

The comp finish with either a maroon or black canvas handle sounds pretty sweet.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/19/20 11:53 PM

I bet that maroon would really show up nice with the comp finish like Tom said. Or even the blade/handle configuration they show in the picture, whatever it is.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/20/20 01:40 AM

Still torn on green blade or comp. I know my coated SR101 knives haven’t show any rust on the sharped exposed edges.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 02/20/20 02:22 AM

I ordered a comp finish with a maroon handle. I think that's a good looking combo, though the black/black combo in the picture looked pretty sweet as well.

Tom,
I’ve watched a few episodes and fully plan to watch the entire series. It is a good clean show.

Right now I’m watching Tennison Prime Suspect. It’s the modern prequel to the long running Prime Suspect Series.

Re: Mega Ratweiler - 03/26/20 10:45 AM

Just got mine yesterday. All I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!

That thick stock just fills the hand in a natural way. The shaped, contoured grips and the rounded edges make it just a pleasure to hold. I got the competition finish with maroon micarta, and I must say that was an excellent choice (since pumpkin G10 wasn't an option, and I couldn't have afforded it if it had been grin ).

It came with a generous layer of grease or cosmoline on all exposed metal surfaces. I am debating whether to force q patina or try to keep it oiled and shiny. Anyone figure out what they intend to do with theirs? Looking for suggestions!

I bought my Chopweiler with a forced patina pre-installed. With the differential heat treat, that really made the hamon POP! Serious no-brainer. Now if they had differentially heat treated THIS one, it would also be a no-brainer...but, sadly, they did not frown Those days are in the past though on a blade like this or the SR-101 BWM, it seems like it would have been functional and amazing smile

It has a NICE heft to it, though I almost wish this was a flat/convex combo without the hollow grind aspect, but as is it's nicely balanced. This is about an inch longer than the Chopweiler, which WAS my all-time favorite mid-sized chopper, giving it a bit more heft; frankly, with the stock thickness, I don't think it could have been shorter and still looked natural. The grind was solid and came shaving sharp it off the box

I'll be honest, I've had a couple of Ratweilers in the past, but just never could warm to them. That little grip protrusion on the bottom always felt awkward and uncomfortable to me. THIS one, however, is a whole new animal! Not only does that grip NOT hurt, but with the thickness and the nuclear treatment, the protrusion feels like a natural part of the construction, and useful for controlling the swing.

The only thing that NEEDS work is the micarta around the rivet holes. It's a bit sharp and could use a minute or so with some sandpaper to smooth it out.

As for sheaths, I just couldn't see this in a leather pouch sheath, so I decided to forego that option. I think Kydex is out, unless it were a dangler. I think a nice leather dangler sheath might be the way to go. Maybe all black, or black with dark brown highlights?

Now I'm kinda wishing is ordered a
Mega Swamp Warren in comp finish silver, or something close in color to the maroon micarta. That would be nice to piggyback on top on this beast.

This was definitely more than I am comfortable spending on a blade (I can get a quality handgun for the price--I bought an S&W M&P 9C, M&P 40SW, FN 40, and XD Mod 2, each for less brand new than this knife). I've taken myself offline from knives for a couple years for just that reason. Knives are getting pricier, while guns have been getting cheaper. Guns will be outlawed sooner than knives, and I still have a few gun "needs" to fill: scopes; 2-3 pistols; mags; spare parts; ammo & components; and a couple unfinished projects... Clock's ticking on this... but I've reached the point where I almost feel like I've got what I need. Never really thought I'd see THAT day grin grin grin grin

Sometimes the stars align and you scrap your plans I had the money; saw this big, beautiful, shiny blade; remembered I still have a few holes in my knife drawer (mainly for my kids to inherit someday); and decided to pull the trigger. I figured if nothing else, I could always sell it off if I didn't like it. I am glad I pulled the trigger. This is one NICE Rat, even if it's there price of a gun. No regrets

Bottom line: I have a new favorite mid-size chopper. I was a little hesitant to buy this based on past experience with the regular Ratweiler and the price, but any anxieties were immediately dispelled once I got my hands on it. This is one truly amazing cheese-feasting little behemoth! If you haven't for one yet, now's the time!

This one gets two tiny little squirrel thumbs way, WAY up!!

I agree with you about the handle. This handle is the most comfortable ratwiler handle that has come out, in my own opinion thus far.
