So lets kick this off

My first real big boy job was being a Lifeguard at the age of 16 for a Private Swim and Tennis Club.

I made .50 cents an hour more than my buddies who cut the grass, did the trash and cleaned up around the Club. I sat for unbelievable hours watching the young ladies swim. Someone had too. I did all this to save up my money to buy a Honda 100 motorcycle.

It was so cool until I got hit by a car. Man did I love that bike. I guess you can’t have it all LOL

Was paid a straight $30 per day.
Worked 8 to 10 hours a day
5 days a week during the summer, Saturdays when school was in

By the way, how do you get the emoticons to post? I tried several things to no avail and have relied on colons and semi-colons with parenthesis brackets.

I saved my money to buy a knife from an archery shop. Later, I took my mother and grandmother out for dinner on Mothers' Day.

Re: SIP & TALK Official Thread For Tonight - 03/22/20 12:45 AM

I was 14 (it was 1968) and I hauled hay for a cent and a half a bale. Pick it up off the ground, stack it on a trailer, take it off the trailer and stack it in the barn. ONE guy baled at sunrise, turned the hay about noon, baled at about 2:30. They were so heavy that the string was literally under your chin and the bale was still on your feet. Anyway, I took at least some of the money from that summer ($125.00) and bought my mom a set of diamond earrings. I think they were a quarter karat. Remember I said it was 1968, things were a tad cheaper back then.

See I said I wouldn't embarrass anyone. I mean it's not like I was in the Philippines and chased a er ah well I had been in the shower and much alcohol was involved. grin I could run pretty fast back then smile

When I got out of high school I attended a school of higher education where I THOUGHT I would major in biology (I missed getting 3 credit house just by testing by only 3 points. When it came back I KNEW the right answer but marked it wrong) boy was I mad. Anyway, I got to partying to much and got put on academic suspension. I was in the first or second AF ROTC so I joined the Air Force and 20 years later retired. Started working for the Sheriff's office (and became a part time Cop in my home town for about 3 years) and retired 25 years later. There will be NO third retirement. I will just enjoy my vastly increasing fortune (thanks to all you loyal tax payers) until I can no longer say I'll buy it. grin

A sword with a 24 inch blade Sort of like a Long Wakizashi. I THINK it would be called a Ko-Katana.

OK, what you do Dan, is weld little "Fingers" on the handle about every 4 inches or so. This will give the injected res C handle something to grab on to and help to stabilize it thereby keeping it from slipping.

They have all earned their place
For years I could not afford more than a couple of good knives a year.
If they don't perform, they are not bought, and if bought they don't stay long.
Haven't sold a SYKCO yet and don't plan to either

Sad I missed this. I was playing games with the kiddos to keep them from each other's throats.

I started my first business when I was 10, selling gum or of my backpack to kids at school. I branched it to have breakers, fireballs, and all sorts of stuff pretty quick. I was pulling in $50-100 a week in profit, which was pretty sweet for a 10 year old in the early 1980s.

I got shut down after a couple months after a girl told one of my teachers what I was doing when the teacher caught her chewing gum in class. Thank you, Blue Falcon...

My first real job where someone was paying me was as a paper boy a couple years later. Mel Manerick hired me. He was driving around the neighborhood for several days in a large black van, hanging out where us kids were playing ball, scoping out little boys he could pimp out to Gannett Publishers and the Democrat and Chronical newspaper.

After the third day of seeing this creepy black van scoping us out, I decided to go up and ask this 50-ish years old dumpy guy why he was stalking us. I approached his van and, rather than kidnapping me, free offered me a job as a paperboy. In hindsight, that could have gone much differently...what can I say? I've been gunning for a Darwin Award since I was 12!

Anyway, that led to me getting a morning route that had me up at 0600 (0530 on Sundays) every day for the next 2.5 years, running papers around the block in every weather situation, sickness or health, and facing down seriously menacing dogs.

One Sunday, I was near home and almost finished, so I loaded up my bag and sent my dad back home (he drove Sundays and days when it was terrible out). I was walking toward one door when I saw a vicious Rottweiler that had broken it's chain and jumped it's fence come charging down on me from 70 yards out. I bolted for a car in the driveway, but the dog got my leg and pulled me down to the ground.

I thought I was dead, but he let go for a sec and I was up and leaped up on top of the roof of the car in two bounds. The dog was circling the car, snarling at me, when the owner of the car came out of his house. He looked up at me angry and about to start telling at me when he saw the dog. His demeanor changed and he said "You just stay where you are!"

Finally, an unfortunate cat walked past and the dog was gone for an easier meal. I finished up the last three papers, shaking like a leaf, and scanning for the Beast before running home.

The paper route was followed by a 5 year stint at McDonald's, two seasons with the Opera Theater of Rochester, a couple years as a missionary (no pay, it was a volunteer gig), a few years in a Chinese restaurant, internships (including at the Asian Wall Street Journal where I wrote a front page article), construction worker, handyman, manager of a farmer's market stand, and several other gigs trying to put myself through college and grad school...

Lots of good stories and fun times in every job... Except the construction and handyman jobs... Nothing but pain, massive 2nd degree sunburns over my head, face, neck, back, arms, and shoulders, and my first taste ( more like a feast) or carpal tunnel syndrome...I learned I am not built for a career with my hands, no matter how much I enjoy it smile

Boy, sounds like you had a fun, tough, rounded education growing up. Guess it made you the man you are today.

I've talked about my "Real" first job, hauling hay. Then 2 years at a news paper running the Printing (custom printing, not news paper printing). Learned how to run an offset letter press AND one you are more used to seeing in the movies, although at a MUCH smaller size. Largest size we could print was 11X17 inches. The offset press was a lot more fun and I could consistently run 100-120 copies a minute when I was "In the Zone".

Well, slinging straw was better than slinging something else. Yellow journalism isn't dead ya know. grin
