Took the plunge

Took the plunge - 11/06/06 05:48 AM

I bit the bullet and ordered a Scrapper 6. It was a natural progression. I was salivating over Busses, but thankfully they were out of my current price range so I was safe. Then I was losing my resolve over the Swamp Rat M6, but it would empty my bank account. Somehow I resisted. Then I saw the Scrapper 6 and I didn't stand a chance. A guy can live on $50 for two weeks right? Right...? Now how many knives do you think I can convince them to let me take to Afghanistan?

Cynic - Howdy and Welcome to the Scrap Yard ! The Scrapper is built like a tank, and will make you smile. It is a great size and should serve you well in Afghanistan. The wait shouldn't be long, as the Yard has been shipping them pretty quickly.

How long before you ship out ? I hope you have time to chat with us - there's really a great bunch of folks here. It would be good to see you post enough to shake the ranking of "Pound Puppy". Thanks for serving our great Country! Tom

I took 8 with me to Iraq. That "D" bag is great for all sorts of contraband....and Welcome to the yard. It is best to use the gateway drugs first, then build up to those previous brands. I tell you though welcome to eternal brokeness also, but you will never be happier being broke as long as you have a few good blades! And also watch for the Bowie that should be out next! By the way, 4 years in Ft. Hood as a Scout, how about yourself?

Due to deploy in about two months. I've been very impressed with the quality of the online knife community, from bladeforums to here. I only wish I had stumbled upon the forums before I started buying knives. I could have avoided wasting money on SOG and Cold Steel initially. Every dog starts out as a puppy though.

From what I hear, the trouble isn't taking stuff to Iraq, it's taking stuff back when you redeploy. I hear they try to take away stuff on the way back that they didn't blink an eye at on the way in. I would hate to part with a good knife like that. I think I'll manage to bring half a dozen or so though. That addiction sure catches one off guard. I looked at some of the Busse stuff at first and thought I didn't have much use for a shard of a tank. Now I can't help but salivate and wonder how I live without them. I fear I will not do so well at saving up money, even with all of the deployment bonuses. 3 years and counting in the 82nd Airborne as a mortar. My first year was in a troop of cav scouts who had two 81mm systems. Then the headquarters company of the Division needed a body from us and they realized I was smarter than the average grunt, so they gave me up. I've been sitting around in an office, keeping the computers working ever since. It has its perks though. I'll have internet while deployed, along with Burger King, Dairy Queen, Subway, etc. It's more a PCS than a deployment. There are worse ways the Army can screw you. I still might find myself volunteering for a convoy or two to fight the boredom.

Thanks for the welcome and I look forward to providing some amateur photography of a Scrapper in Afghanistan.

You can always mail it back before you leave to your folks house, then have them bring it to your homecoming. Or just stuff it in your Lt's box or back to your duffle bags....it really isn't hard to get stuff back. I got my AK Bayonet and sheath no questions asked. Along with all my knives. Long story, but they made it with no hassles.

Re: Took the plunge - 11/08/06 02:27 AM

Yeah I may end up shipping a lot of stuff back. I foresee myself ordering a lot of knives when the money starts rolling in and I'm afraid I'll have a tough box full of them by the time we re-deploy. I think my section is bringing a connex along though, so I should be able to sneak some contraband back.

Good old Fayettenam. I think they're making some attempt at cleaning it up. Downtown isn't what it used to be. I doubt Bragg Blvd will ever be free of pawn shops and strip clubs though. Not a single knife shop though. The nearest one is all the way in Cary. I can't fathom that.

Re: Took the plunge - 11/08/06 03:23 AM

Ahhh Bragg blvd...Hooker's, tat's and drugs for everyone!!!

Ahh the memories...

But I digress..

I tend to buy one or 2 of each style that interests me and go from there...Granted I tend to only buy knives for myself around 2 times a year (the business gets the lions share) and I tend to study those before I ever let my fingers do the walking as it were...My scrappy 6 tends to fill the slot of several knives so it is a keeper once I retire it from active sheath duty

Only place is in the containment area?? wow didnt know that

Ya know what Bragg needs??

A gunshop/tattooparlor/stripjoint/gunshop&cutlery store

Now that would be a MAN'S MALL!!!

Thanks for serving, Cynic!

Speaking of cynical, you may be able to get some good deals on oriental rugs over in Afghanistan and sell them for much more here in the USA. But more important is staying safe and with a pulse.
