D'oh... I got so caught up with the contest that I forgot to comment on the knife! I really like the front part of the blade-- it looks like it'll also be really good for push cutting, in addition to being a chopping monster. This is a bowie that's made for using!

Hmm…I might pass on this one. I was interested in how a new steel would perform, but money’s kinda tight right now and it’s too similar to my BR. I like the thumb ramp on top. My RatMastiff has that and I think it’s more comfortable with it. I wish my BR had one. I dunno about that squarish choil though. That doesn’t look like it would be as comfortable as a round one. I dunno though…it would be really cool to have a LE with a logo. I guess it will depend on how much $ I have left after the holidays and how much it costs.

Who knows. We might see ‘em by Xmas after all. [Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com] [Linked Image from i6.photobucket.com]
And I dunno about you guys, but I’d like to see some LE pics as well.

Andy,

If I can come up with "THE" name, I will loan that one to you till you can get your own. I plan on buying the 2 versions anyway. I am in the process of allocating the funds right now. 1 piece of Infi should cover the pair.

That’s very thoughtful of you, thanks for the offer. I might be broke for a while. This year all we’re going to get for Xmas is a new cell phone plan and that’s it. That’s why I was really hoping for the Crash Axe and new Howler so I could have something else exciting for Xmas. Right now I have a prepaid Tracfone, and we’re going to get a Cingular family talk plan.

I want to get a nicer phone than the free ones, so most of my money right now will be going there. I was thinking of getting a PDA smartphone with internet access so I could talk to you guys on here when I’m away from home. Mostly I was hoping I could use it to make more money. A lot of times I’m at an auction or Goodwill or whatever and see something I think might be valuable, but I’m not sure. With that phone, I could quickly search eBay to find the value of something and see if it’s worth purchasing or not. Unlimited internet access is an extra $40 a month, so I’d have to be able to make at least that much extra profit a month to break even.

What I usually do is have to go home and check, but if it’s something really underpriced it’s usually gone by the time I come back. I was hoping this phone would allow me to find out on the spot so I could make more monthly income. But it’s also scary to sign a 2 year contract of an extra $40 a month when eBay is my sole source of income and I never know if I’ll find anything to sell or not. [Linked Image from swampratknifeworks.com] I’m hoping it would pay for itself and then some, giving me more knife money to spend.

I also still have to get a couple small gifts for my parents. They said we weren’t going to do anything for Xmas, but I want to get them something so they have something to open on Xmas. Even though they won’t be getting me anything to open on Xmas. I dunno if we’ll even have stockings…oh well, at least we have a tree.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/05/06 08:34 PM

Thom its all about res-C and INFI there is no place in my world for micarta! I could buy a FBM today (if Jerry's still making them) but as I would absolutely hate the bloody handle it'd be a bit pointless! Full scale construction is just extra steel in the wrong place that makes for an over heavy knife and gets the balance wrong. So many Busse handle options and it all involves nailing on bits of resiny paper or fabric, doh!! Spec res-C as an option Jerry!!!! My problem with sr77 (and I love my Scrapper...) is that it rusts more than INFI does, corrosion resistance plus res-C does it for me...

Ranting over!!
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/05/06 09:34 PM

Paul - After reading all that one would think you want a Res-C/Infi combo!
Posted By: Paul the Brit'

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/05/06 10:03 PM

Hmm, you would sort of form that opinion I guess! Just to confirm- I do like sr77 (so I don't get lynched!)... Pity it goes rusty.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/05/06 10:59 PM

You'll find that's true about everything worth having; neglect causes problems to the strongest substances (relationships, shock steels, mechanical equipment...)
Posted By: Gravelface

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/06/06 12:19 AM

What are you doing to it to Rust it?....I use my LE around the yard quite a bit...dry it off and sheath it...no rust...I rarely oil it. Now my 5160 blades..I left one on the hood of my truck at dusk and with in 2 hours there was rust forming.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/06/06 12:23 AM

I love the Resiprene C handles on the Scrapper 6!! THAT is THE perfect handle material for a knife!! So, I CAN understand the want for INFI & Resiprene C!!!

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/06/06 03:50 AM

Living on the isle of Britain, I would suspect that the salty air is a problem that most of us don't have to be concerned with. Extra vigilance and maintenance would definitely be required, as Thom pointed out. Anyone living on a U.S. coast should have the same concern. Of course, that FINE product RENWAX comes from Britain.......................

I thought of making sheaths a while back. At the time though, my stabbed hand was still too useless for the task. Now I’m getting a bit better, maybe I could get back to making some. I never did make a M6 sheath for sale, just my own for me. I think it will also fit the Scrapper 6, though I’ve not tried it. With all these great knives coming out at once (Bowie, BM, Crash Axe, Howler) I dunno how much $ people will have left for sheaths. Then again, maybe they’d be so broke they couldn’t afford a more expensive one and would buy one of mine instead. Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Clear driveways? Oh hell no, not with my back. I have scoliosis and snapping scapula syndrome. I wouldn’t last more than a few minutes. Too bad I don’t have a snowblower. Just walking I start hurting after 10-15 mins. 30 mins of walking or more and I need a cane or walking stick. Besides the horrible pain, it causes swelling of my muscles and pushes against my lungs until I can only take like half breaths and I have to push against my muscles with labored breathing just to breath. It feels like I have a weight on my chest when I breath. It’s a major pain in the @$$ that impeads a lot of my nature loving activities. They haven’t yet given me anything strong enough to help it. They gave me Darvocets (which barely do anything) and they were afraid anything stronger would be too dangerous and addictive. And probably cost a fortune since I don’t have insurance. I’ll just have to keep trying to find things to eBay for knife $ I guess.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/07/06 01:23 AM

Thom, no problem mate! The bowie is stunning, but for my corrosion hang-up I'd be thinking of doing a lot more about owning one than posting on the competition! I can't really justify a (n other) chopper and I still want that bowie... it is just too right. This country has relative humidity like Florida on a bad day and cool weather like Alaska on a bad day! Plastic goes rusty over here... That's why Land-Rovers are Ali-alloy and rivet and bolt together! (Pity they break down so often...)

I really wasn't trying to dis the sr77 bowie, it rocks!

Andy sorry to hear about your back problems! That sucks... It speaks very well of your character that you are still so positive. I think Thom is right about your future employment though you are Mr. Web-head!

Wow I got behind on this thread after a day or so off! Andy my wallet is like yours... Just a few sad old receipts and a WELL used credit card! PK respect for the double dog status- awesome work... Ironballs welcome to the yard! IMO a double edge would make for a great fighting bowie, but I think (hope?) most of us would use the bowie as a back-woods tool rather than a combat weapon so the second edge would just limit batoning.. I think you are right in saying you could put a second edge on it- but would that take time with a file!!

Andy wouldn't be so much of a web-head if he spent less time chasing Hobbits down dark tunnels on long and twisty stairs!

Hi I'm a newbie and I was wondering what the hell does infi mean thanks
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/11/06 03:01 PM

Joebobz - Howdy and Welcome to the Scrap Yard! Infi refers to the special steel that Jerry Busse uses in his knives. I'm no metallurgist, but Infi is supposedly more rust-resistant (slightly) than SR77 steel. You can't lose with either one!

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/11/06 06:17 PM

Well, here it is in a nutshell...It is what you want a knife made from! And SR-77, but this is what is said about Infi:

INFI is a proprietary steel and heat-treat protocol developed by Busse Combat Knife Co. It is ONLY available through Busse Combat.

Some facts and info about INFI.

Hardness
Although hardened INFI knives are 58-60 Rc we have yet been able to chip an edge. The edge can be dented or misaligned but its high level of malleability at such high hardness has never been duplicated by any other steel that we are aware of or have tested.

Flexibility
In one of our performance tests, we bend a Battle Mistress 35 degrees in a vise and it springs back to true. Why would we do this? What does it prove? What is the benefit to the customer? Not only does this test demonstrate the enormous toughness and lateral strength of an INFI blade but, because our hardness is homogenous and not differential, it demonstrates the amount of lateral strength and "spring" of INFI all the way to the edge. That means that edge of the blade will possess this same toughness. INFI is the only knife steel ever tested that has achieved such high levels of lateral strength with a homogenous hardness of 58 - 60 Rc. No other steel has even neared this performance level.

Edge Retention
Many so-called knife experts have heralded the "wear resistance" of a steel as the key to edge retention. This may very well be true if a knife is designed and intended for the cutting of soft materials ONLY. However, we have never inspected a dull knife and found the edge to be perfectly smoothed away, like a ball bearing. Instead what we find are microscopic chips where the edge has broken or chipped away like glass after having impacted against bone, gravel, or other hard surfaces. This micro chipping dictates that the edge be reground during the resharpening process, which will ultimately lead to a thicker edge and a radical change in overall blade shape. Steels with high wear resistance normally score fairly low in shock resistance, lateral strength, and overall toughness. INFI scores very high in ALL of these categories.

Sharpening
INFI's high level of chip resistance also makes it the easiest steel to resharpen by hand that we have ever encountered. I personally fall into the category of "hand sharpening challenged". I've heard tales of those who can sharpen ball peen hammers to a razor's edge on an Arkansas stone in less than 5 seconds flat. My experiences have always been to the contrary. The spine of the knife is usually sharper than the edge when I'm finished applying my magic stone sharpening technique. One of the great features of INFI is that simply stropping away from the edge (the way a barber strops a straight edged razor) on a ceramic stick is basically all that is required to resharpen INFI. Since you're not chipping steel off the edge there is no need to grind any steel away. This feature of INFI will, likewise, allow you to keep the same overall profile of the knife for a much greater period of time.

How does INFI compare to other steels?
Simple question, complex answer. INFI represents what I have always dreamed of in a knife steel. Tougher, by an enormous margin, than any other steel I've ever tested. Unparalleled edge holding under high impact and in cutting tests. Shock resistance that begs you to "bring it on". An ease of re-sharpening that you have to see to believe and higher levels of lateral strength at high hardness than have ever been achieved by any other steel. We have published our test results and our testing methodology. We have video taped all of these tests and play the video at the knife shows we attend. More importantly, we have duplicated these performance tests in "LIVE" demonstrations at many trade shows throughout the United States. We encourage all manufacturers to put their products through our tests and to publish their results. If you want to know how another maker's knife will compare to a Busse Combat knife, ask the other maker to duplicate our tests in a "live" demo.

Is INFI stainless?
Not supposed to be. However, INFI has demonstrated very high levels of stain resistance in many different climates. Uncoated blades have been tested for years in Alaska and have made their way into the wilds of British Columbia, the High Sierras and tropical rain forests. No rust in Alaska or British Columbia! No rust in the High Sierras, even when exposed to great quantities of blood and left in the wet grass overnight. The tropical rain forest, which has been known to rust plastic (just kidding), did offer the toughest of the environmental exposures and a light speckling of surface oxidation did occur but was easily removed in the field with a hand rubbing of sand and water. No deep pitting was reported. When compared to other cutlery steels in salt spray tests, INFI faired better than ATS-34 and D-2. Although all three grades exhibited surface oxidation, the INFI was not deeply pitted as was common in these other two grades. So, although INFI is not technically a stainless steel, it is certainly not a rust aggressive steel. Couple this with a minimal amount of care and you've got a fairly maintenance free knife.

With a steel like INFI it's easy to understand why we offer the toughest guarantee in the business. We guarantee against any and all unintentional MAJOR damage forever.

Ok…I don’t get it. I post a G or PG comedy pic of a guy fully clothed posing in front of a fountain with the water appearing to be coming from his rear, (only as a joke because it referenced what was being discussed) and my pic is yanked and called “inappropriate” and “trash”, but RF can post a super-imposed pic of a male Busse employee appearing as a cross dressing stripper, and GF can post a pic of inter-species “mating” and you don’t yank their pics? WTF?

Not that I care about them posting their pics, (I thought they were funny like most people) but it seems your being a little unfair with the moderation. I don’t think there was anything inappropriate about my pic. Yes, it was juvenile, but nothing that would be harmful to children to see or anything like that. You can certainly see and hear much worse on standard tv. There was no nudity, language, or anything like that. At most, it could be considered rude or juvenile.

At first I thought maybe you hadn’t seen their posts yet, but it’s been a full day, and their pics are still up, and I see you’ve posted recently so you’ve been on here. My pic sure didn’t stay up that long. I feel like you’re unfairly coming down hard on me, perhaps because of past postings. You asked us to keep the children in mind, which I have. I have not since posted anything that I believe would be inappropriate for children to see. As I was searching through my pics, I passed up several other pics I could have posted because I thought you might think they were inappropriate (PG or PG-13 equivalent) but I don’t think there was anything wrong with the pic I posted.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel as though I’m being unfairly singled out here?

Hi Andy,

I have no intention to single anyone out and I'm sorry if you feel I have. Please be assured that picture would have been edited as inappropriate regardless of who posted it. Also, I have returned to edit one picture that you mention. Thank you for pointing out my error.

Lastly, I've been signing my edits as Trash. I can see how that could be interpreted as an insult and I will avoid that signature future edits.

Feel free to email me at trashcan@scrapyardknives.com if you want to discuss this further.

This bowie is a beautiful thang.

I'm soooooo glad you guys have elected to bring out a BIG Blade as your next offering.

After receiving and being impressed by my Scrapper 6, there is no doubt I will be ordering one.
In fact I'd like to try and make sure I have funds avaialable for more than one.

Any chance of a rough price guide and shipping date (or date where you think you might be taking orders)?

I wondered the same thing. I thought perhaps they’re trying to differentiate themselves from SR and Busse by coming up with their own slightly different design. I don’t think it would be as comfortable though, because the finger is round.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 12/14/06 06:41 PM

The square-ish intersection between edge and choil is sort of traditional isn't it? I always choke back on my Scrapper choil keeping away from the sharp edge so I figure the bowie choil (which seems round toward the grip) would be nice and comfy still.. I just looked at the picture again, that knife will be choil heaven- a nice curved choil and thumb ramp, nice!

Hi sr77dogg,

I'm not sure I understand where anyone has been lashed out at or harshly censored. If you have any specific situations, please let me know and we can discuss them. Offending pictures have been edited out without much fuss on my part, IMO, but perhaps that technique is a bit impersonal.

I can continue to work on my moderation style to make it less abrupt and I will. In return I ask that you please be patient and understand that if a post is edited, we simply ask that you learn from it and not post the same content again.

First, this needs to stay on page-1.

Second, I keep looking at the Bowie. If the price stays Scrapyard-low, I might be forced to buy one only as an uber-machete. Sure it'll be a bunch more than my Cold Steel bolo. But it'll have that cool Res-C handle and be a whole lot harder to beat.

OK, I'm in. Bring on the Bowie. (And wehre's my Scrapper-4's??? Stupid PO!)

Dan - Let's ALL celebrate birthdays for you, TKC, and Jerry by getting a new Bowie!!! Of course, you need to start selling them first! Tom

I like it.

Maybe we should have a black bowie tie party... ha ha,,,sorry I could help myself! Seriously, I do plan on having a glass of Woodford Reserve the day we put the Dog Father up for sale to celebrate this and our birthdays.

Cheers
Dan

Jan is also my parents anniversary. This one will be their 30th actually. Very true Paul! However, having bought both models of the Scrapper, I have to say that the LE version is a thing of beauty. My recommendation - buy BOTH!!!

January does seem.. different. Can even feel it with the prices on the Exchange.
I think it's a combination of recovering from holidays, property taxes, mucky weather, having to go back to work, etc.

But shortly after that...

Springtime, tax refunds, biking weather.. it all comes back around

to be honest, me niether, but i like to think of it this way: if i must have a big black bowie, i'd hate to settle for the $40 1085 taiwanese model.

does that mean anything? absolutely not, but it helps to make believe it does. beside that, for each dollar, i don't think you can do better. i'm pretty sure this thing'll take more impact than can be withstood by two beckers or four kabars. in that vein, does a battle mistress withstand more than three dog father's can? dialectical questions....

The FBM may not be as tough as three Dogs but it won't go rusty.. If you live in the desert Dan makes the only big knife you'll ever need!

yup. a big part of me wants to call it quits after this. we'll see.
Posted By: Unsub

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 01/16/07 01:09 AM

I think the FBM is at most 10% better than the Dogfather and that is in edge retention and corrosion resistance mostly. As far as impact resistance and springyness the dog is probably very close to the FBM. I like the RES C handle much better as well. Rust is not a big a deal on a coated knife.
I am really looking forward to the bowie as I don't have one and have always wanted one.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 01/16/07 01:29 AM

I'm using birthday money for the bowie. I had it targeted at a new fishing pole. However, that'll have to wait.

Re: Here's The New Scrap Yard Bowie. - 01/16/07 02:20 AM

At least the Dog is cheap enough to really use... I just couldn't abuse a FBM due to cost even if I liked micarta and would buy one.

it's OK to release the bowie now. I've been receiving birthday cash in the mail. I can now afford to purchase a bowie out my my own personal cash stash. It's OK I won't get in trouble with the wife.

good ideas.. we'll see how it goes..
as a back-up i was gonna declare my Dog Father as a "smoking cessation device" to help deal with nicotine withdrawal. I think my HMO might actually cover that!
