I used to work for a prosthetic maker, oddly enough, and yep, he had a can for just such an emergency. oddly enough. They went through a lot of that stuff.

Are you the type of person that remembers that special pocket knife your Dad gave you? You were 12 and had just completed the hunter safety course at the fire hall. Life was good! Do you still have the knife in your dresser drawer? Do you take it out to just feel the feel of it from time to time? If you do, you are not alone. That’s how many knife collectors got their start, collecting something they love and respect.

But how do you know what kind of knives to collect? Approaches you could take with knives could be: factory knives, handmade knives, pocket knives(folders), fixed-blade knives, old knives, art knives, swords from certain historical periods, knives by only one maker and ad infinitum.

If you choose to collect custom knives made by one particular maker, it is a good idea to develop a working relationship with him (or her)! You can have custom knives made for you, personally. You will appreciate the attention to detail that a good knifemaker will give your knives, and he will appreciate your return business.

There are a few things that remain constant in collecting knives though......

1. Buy what YOU like. Don’t worry about resale. Knives can rise and fall in value just like any other item and you may have it around a long time.

2. Look for quality. How will you know a quality knife? Check out these things on the knife in question:

Folding Knives:


Check out the knife. Is it finished inside and out?(called “fit and finish”)

Wobble - Is it sturdy? In some knives you can expect a small amount of play, but you need to learn what kinds of mechanisms it might have.

Does it open and close smoothly?

Does the blade stay shut under normal usage?

Check the blade grinds.

Check for sharp edges and the finish of the screw slots.

Is the blade clean. Is it oil free?

Inspect the steel for flaws. A hand rubbed finish should be a continuous set of lines, not fuzzy brush marks.

Where Does A Person Find Knives To Collect?

Check out your local flea markets and yard sales. Often people have old knives stuck in a box full of, well, more old knives. Most of them are the kitchen variety, but many people aren’t aware of the value of knives.

Estate sales and auctions are a good source - just get there early so you can root through things. The greatest place to buy knives is at a knife show, or a gun show. Buy a copy of Blade Magazine and check out the section titled “Show Calendar.” They have a good listing of knife shows listed by date, with the location and contact information listed also.

At these shows you meet the makers, collectors, purveyors, factory reps, book vendors and anyone else you can imagine that is connected to the knife world. Your local gun shows often have “knife tables” set up. If you go to an out of state knife show, be sure to check the laws of the states you may be passing through. You could inadvertently break the law by transporting the “collectibles.”

Heres some interesting tips to those with kids.....

Check that the oven and other cooking appliances are turned off before you leave the kitchen.

Keep electrical appliances away from water to avoid shocks. Stay away from electrical sockets, especially if your hands are wet.

If you burn yourself, tell an adult immediately and hold the burned area under cool running water.

Don't put knives or other sharp objects into a sink full of water. Someone could reach in and get hurt.

Watch out for sharp knives. Let an adult cut or slice foods or help you do it.

Never put water on a cooking fire -- it could make the fire bigger. Ask an adult for help! Put out a fire with a fire extinguisher. If the fire is small, it can be put out with baking soda or smothered with a lid. Leave the house and call 911 if the fire has leaping flames.

Don't put cooked food on an unwashed plate or cutting board that held raw food. Always use a clean plate.

Never add water to a pan that has hot oil in it. It could make the oil splatter and burn someone.

Always turn pot handles in toward the back of the rangetop. This way no one can bump into them and knock the pot over.

Keep paper towels, dish towels and pot holders away from the rangetop so they don't catch on fire.

my nephew once put his hand directly on a red hot burner, he had those nasty spiral burns on his hand for weeks. I never felt so bad for a kid. His parents felt awful.

Knife making as an art started thousands of years ago and is still being practiced with vigor by those who tend to continue the art form and derive joy, pride and pleasure from it. Knife making was probably one of the first inventions from mankind after learning how to tend metal into shapes and sizes.

For knife aficionados or even for those who work with knife for the bulk of the day, knife handles become as important as the other important part of the knife - the blade. Knife handles should be carefully selected or made as they can affect the experience of using the knife. Also, the knife handle gives you a choice to personalize the knife in many ways - be it decorating it with designs, or etching or engraving your name or message, adorning it with stones etc. Knife handles thus provide a place to show case the personality of the user or the knife maker.

Knife handles can be made from many different materials ranging form simple material like kitchen linoleum to many kinds of hard woods like rosewood to exotic material like Caribou antlers or woolly mammoth ivory. Each material has its own characteristics and the best material is the one that matches the needs of the user and fits him or her.

Hard wood is one of the most popular materials for knife handles. Hard woods like cocobolo, rosewood, ebony are used very frequently. They are relatively inexpensive and are easy to be shaped by the knife maker. A well shaped and polished hard wood handle feels extraordinarily good in hand while holding it or using it for cutting and slicing and they also look aesthetically very nice. Stag is another material that is extremely popular although it is becoming more and more costly and rare. Micarta, a composite synthetic material made of linen or paper with epoxy resin is another commonly used handle material. This is very strong, extremely durable and light. This comes in glossy or matte finish for grips and can be extremely durable. These are one of the best choices for tough heavy duty knives. Paper, linen and denim micartas are available for different degrees of toughness. Micarta handles also come in many different bright colors. Many different polymer materials are available, the best among them being ABS which is a high strength polymer that can be molded very easily and kraton - a springy polymer, mostly used as a flexible inlay in the grip. Fiberglass reinforced nylon (FRN) is a polymer that can be molded using injection molding.

Many other exotic handles are available which are aesthetically beautiful, but might not be very practical to heavy use. Automatic dishwashers are not good for knives as the temperature in the machines are too high and this will affect the steel as well as organic handle material like wood, bone, ivory, horn etc. Natural wood handles need to be tended carefully with polish and cleaning regularly. As most of the wood used for handles has been treated with tung oil and coated many times until it developed a nice sheen, the best way to preserve the wood is to restore the finish with an occasional coat of tung oil and wiping it with a clean, dry cloth. It will be good to let the knife dry overnight and buff it with another clean dry cloth before using it. It is not a good idea to soak knifes with natural handles in hot soapy water. Micarta and other artificial material that are impervious to moisture can be soaked thus, but natural material will be affected by such a practice.

Knife handles are an important part of the knife making and knife using experience. The handle makes or mars the use of the knife. Further the handle also provides a place for the knife maker to experiment, add decorative pieces or even etch or engrave a name or initial. Knife handles are made from many material including hard wood, fine wood, antlers, stags, stones like jade or turquoise and even many exotic material like tusks of elephant or wooly mammoth.

One of the delights of knife making is crafting the beautiful handles. Starting from selecting the correct material, cutting, shaping, grinding it to crafting beautiful handles from it, working on the knife handle is a delight. Domestic antler and many artificial materials resembling stag are available for those who require inexpensive and easily maintainable alternatives.

In order to craft wood, it is first required to select the correct piece of wood of the correct size. The wood is first cut and then rounded and shaped to fit the user's hands. The size and shape of the rounded wood would depend on the function and purpose for which the knife is going to be used. This will be followed by grinding the top portion of the handle where the ring cap would be mounted. Then the handle is mounted tightly and the hole for the knife to mount is drilled at the bottom of the handle. This hole is sometimes slightly burnt to give corrosion resistance to the blade.

The handle is then smoothened out and finished with fine sandpaper. This should later be polished using a piece of clean, smooth and dry cloth. Oak, Red sandalwood and ebony make fine choices for knifes that are used very regularly. The ring cap is mostly made of metal but sometimes plastics or horn is also used.

One of the tips used by experienced knife makers is to drill the hole for the tang and form the slot for it before shaping the handle. The drilling and slotting should be done using a good vice so as to keep the hands free. The reason for doing this before shaping the handle is that, even if the hole becomes slightly off-center, the handle can be shaped accordingly to bring it back to the center.

Once the handle has been shaped, it is time to decorate it with your own personal designs. You can use your own carpentry tools to carve designs. These can be filled and fitted with thin metal sheets using epoxy. Carving can include intricate designs or simple ones like an initial. Many options are available to decorate a completed knife handle.

One of the biggest dangers with wooden handles is shrinkage factor. If you attach a handle to a piece of wood with residual moisture, the wood is apt to crack as the moisture evaporates. This is because of the fact that the wood shrinks as the moisture is removed. The best way to avoid this kind of a situation is to completely dry the wooden handle before attaching the knife blade. It is better to leave the handle in a dry place or even put it in the oven set at the lowest possible temperature for a few hours. This will ensure that the wood is completely dry and does not crack later. Antlers are pretty stable when it comes to handling moisture and they don't need such a treatment.

If a knife is not sharp enough to cut what you need to cut then it is useless. The edges have to be sharp throughout the life of the knife, but it is not so. If you see the cutting edge of a knife closely with the help of a magnifying glass or a microscope, you could see there are small teeth that make the look of a saw. This is what makes the knife sharp and useful. On using a knife repeatedly it becomes blunt. If you look at a blunt knife with a magnifying glass you could see that the saw like cutting edges are bent and not in alignment. You have to make them straight to be useful again.

The effort you take to sharpen a knife depends on the hardness of the blade that is used in the knife. If the hardness is more then it takes more effort to sharpen the cutting edges and the knife would retain the sharpness for longer time. If the hardness of the blade is less then it is easy to sharpen the knife and it will lose the sharp edge sooner. A Rockwell scale is used to measure the hardness of the metal that is used in the blade of the knife.

Sharpeners used for sharpening the blades can be made of steel or ceramic. Both of these are good and are used for different kinds of blades. Metals can be easily sharpened by steel sharpeners. Hard metals are sharpened easily by ceramic sharpeners. Once you feel that the cutting edge is blunt then you can use an abrasive stone to sharpen the edges and to keep the knife on the right track.

One of the most important techniques in sharpening a knife is the angle at which you are trying to sharpen the knife. The angle at which you tilt the knife with respect to the abrasive stone is very important to maintain the cutting edge of the knife. The thumb rule is that the cutting angle should be 10 to 15 degrees from the perpendicular.

When you are using a ceramic sharpener to sharpen a knife you have to start with the base of the knife and slide the knife down the length of the sharpener. When you do this just apply little pressure so that the knife slides on the sharpener and the cutting edge grazes the sharpener. The angle at which you slide the knife should be constant during every stroke. You have to end a stroke with the tip of the knife at the base of the sharpener. Repeat this step on the other side of the blade.

If you are using a steel sharpener, you have to start with the base of the knife being at the base of the steel sharpener and then move your hands away from each other in such a way that the blade slides on the steel sharpener towards its tip. When you reach the tip, you should see that the blades tip is also on the tip of the sharpener. This is the kind of stroke that is to be applied when you are using a steel sharpener. These methods that are used to sharpen your knives are manually done. It is found that the wear and tear of the knife is more when it is done manually. Hence some people prefer to use a grinding stone which is machine operated.

Once in a while depending on the usage of the knife you have to use a grinding stone to sharpen the cutting edges of the blade. At least once in a year you have to use a grinding stone to do this. By using a grinding stone you get a new cutting edge. It is better to do this grinding from a professional. If you have a sand wheel then you can also do that yourself. Some of the grinders have different types of stones that can be used for grinding. The surface of the stone varies from coarsest to fine. You have to grind your knife on all these to get the exact finishing on the edges. Some people use wet stone to sharpen their knives. Such people believe that the minute shavings from the metal keep floating from the surface so that you get better edges when you grind the knife blade. Some people are against the wet grinding since they believe that the wetness clogs the pores of the grinding stone and spoils it forever.

Arkansas Stones, Ceramic stones and rods and such, Spyderco Sharpmaker, Diamond stones and rods, etc etc. The one I go for the most is a bar of ceramic I got on Ebay. Slightly rough and puts a good utility edge.

Oil Stones
Oil stones are the traditional Western stones that many people grew up using. These stones are made from one of three materials (Novaculite, Aluminum Oxide, or Silicon Carbide) and use oil for swarf (metal filing) removal.

The first oil stones are natural stones made from Novaculite. These natural stones are quarried in Arkansas and processed to make what we call Arkansas Stones. These stones are separated into different grades related to the density and the finish a stone produces on a blade. The coarsest of them are called Washita. The finer grades are called Soft Arkansas, Hard Arkansas and Hard Translucent Arkansas. These natural oil stones can produce a polished edge, but tend to cut more slowly than man-made stones.

The next fastest cutting oil stone is called the India stone. The India stone is made of Aluminum Oxide. These stones can cut fast, and can also produce a fine edge on tools and knives. The grading system for these stones is generally labeled fine, medium and coarse. These stones are often brown or orange in color.

The fastest cutting oil stones are made of Silicon Carbide. The silicon carbide stones made by Norton are called Crystolon stones. These stones are also labeled fine, medium and coarse. They are usually gray in color. While these stones won't produce an edge as fine as the India or natural stones, the fast cutting make them ideal for initial coarse sharpening.

The good overall performance and the modest price are the oil stone’s greatest assets. A set of India or Crystolon stones are the least expensive stones to purchase. These stones are also relatively hard, so the stones rarely require flattening.

The main disadvantage of the oil stone is its slower cutting rate. Of the three main stone types, the oil stone is the slowest. The fact that oil is used to remove the swarf is also messier to clean up than water

Water Stones
Water stones are relatively new to the Western world, but have gathered a large following due to their many advantages. Like the oil stones, the water stones are available in both natural and synthetic materials. However, due to availability, only synthetic stones will be discussed.

Synthetic water stones are generally made of Aluminum Oxide. This is the same abrasive material used in the India stones. However, the difference is the binder that holds the abrasives in the water stone together. Water stones are softer than India stones, which promotes faster cutting because the old abrasive material breaks away and is replaced with fresh sharp material.

Fast cutting is clearly an advantage of the water stone. The other obvious advantage is the use of water rather than oil to remove the swarf from the stone. However, the water stone is not perfect. The softness that promotes fast cutting also wears the stone down more quickly. This tends to wear the stone unevenly, which requires flattening to bring the stone back into shape.

Diamond Stones
Diamond stones contain small diamonds attached to the face of a metal plate. These small industrial diamonds are much harder than any of the other sharpening stones. However, not all diamond stones perform the same function, nor are they always created equal.

There are two main types of diamond stone styles. The more common style contains holes in the diamond surface to capture the swarf. These stones cut very fast and are very simple to use. The next type is the continuous diamond surface. These stones are preferred when you are sharpening tools with points that might get caught in the recesses of the non-continuous diamond surface. Both types of diamond stones are available in mono-crystalline and poly-crystalline diamonds. The mono-crystalline diamonds are more desirable as they will last longer.

The two greatest advantages of the diamond stone are the very fast cutting that the diamonds provide and the flatness that is retained by the diamond stone. In fact, coarse diamond stones are often used to flatten oil or water stones. The main disadvantage of the diamond stone is its initial cost. While these stones are the most expensive, they will also last a long time, so the long-term cost can be comparable to other stones.

There are good reasons why there are different types of sharpening stones available. There is not one type of stone that is best for everyone. Selecting the right one starts by finding the stone with the best combination of advantages for your particular sharpening needs.

I can sharpen a hoe or shovel with a bench grinder, but never could get the nack of sharpening a lawn mower blade. I always put them out of balance, especially the mulching variety, those are fussy.

Additionally they use metal particles such as alumina or steel, which makes them last longer than naturally occurring once.

Step 1: Select the proper coarseness for your bench stone.
Selecting the proper coarseness for your bench stone is an important first step in sharpening your knife. Not every knife needs to start at the coarsest stone you have, on the other hand a very dull knife can't be sharpened on only your finest stone. Starting with the proper coarseness will ensure that you achieve the edge you need quickly. If your knife is very dull or has a nicked blade, start with your coarsest stone. The coarse stone removes material quickly so a poor edge can be refined quickly. However, the coarse stone must be followed up with your finer stone to refine the edge. If your knife is only slightly dull and just needs a quick touch up, starting at a medium or fine stone can save you time. Starting on a fine stone requires fewer steps but must only be used on an edge requiring little work.

Step 2: Select the right bevel angle.
Selecting the right sharpening angle is the next step in sharpening. For more detailed instructions on selecting the right angle, try reading this article. Regardless of the method of sharpening, a bevel angle should be selected. This angle doesn't need to be exact but following some general guidelines is a good idea. Most knife manufacturers recommend a roughly 20 degree angle. Depending on the use of your knife, you can move up or down from that angle. A fillet knife is never used on anything hard so an angle a few degrees less will produce a sharper edge. On the other hand, a survival knife with various uses can benefit from a more durable edge a few degrees larger.

Step 3: Apply water or oil to stone.
Some stones need water, while other stones need oil for floating the swarf (small metal filings created when sharpening) away. Simply apply a few drops of either oil or water directly to the stone. (We recommend using an inexpensive spray bottle for applying the water.) The lubricant you need is determined by the type of stone you are using. Water stones and diamond stones require water. Oil stones such as India, Crystolon and Arkansas stones use oil for a lubricant.

Step 4: Sharpening the knife.
Starting with the coarsest stone needed for your knife, you'll progress through each finer stone until you've reached the desired level of sharpness.

Rest your knife on the stone at your chosen bevel angle. An easy method for determining the angle by eye is to visualize a 45 degree angle and then take half that amount. That will give you a ballpark estimate of the angle and then you can adjust accordingly up or down. With a slicing action bring the length of the knife across the stone with a motion that starts with the heel of the knife on the stone and ends with the point of the knife. The motion should resemble a sweeping arc pattern across your stone. Be very careful to maintain the angle of the knife on the stone. Longer curved knives provide additional challenges but as long as you can maintain the angle you'll be sharpening very effectively. Repeat this process on the other side of the knife and continue repeating until you've sharpened your knife though all your stone grits.

An alternative method for a very dull knife.
A dull knife requires a coarse stone and may require more time using the stone. Because it can require many strokes, we suggest that you take up to 10 strokes before alternating sides

How do you know if you're done with a stone?
An important but often confusing area of sharpening is knowing when you're done with one stone and ready for the next finer grit. On coarse stones it's very easy. When you sharpen one side you'll notice a burr forming on the opposite side of the edge. This burr is hard to see but is easy to feel. Very carefully feel for the burr by gently running your hand from the spine to the edge. (Do not run your finger along the knife edge from heel to tip, that's only asking for trouble!) A burr if formed when your stone removes material directly at the edge. The burr will move from one side of your knife to another as you alternate sharpening sides. Make sure you have felt the burr jump between both sides before you move on to the next finer stone. That will ensure that you have sharpened both sides effectively. The finer grits are done the same way but the burr is much smaller. On the finest grits you may not be able to notice the burr at all. Testing the knife sharpness will tell you when you're done

How sharp does it need to be?
In most cases, the sharper, the better. The sharpness of your edge is determined by the bevel (the lower the angle, the sharper the edge) and how fine of a grit you choose for your final honing. Since you've already determined your bevel angle many steps earlier, now you just need to know which grit you can stop at. This again depends on the use of the knife. In most cases, go all the way to the finest stone that you own as this will give you your best edge. The only exception would be a knife used to cut soft vegetables like tomatoes, as a slightly more coarse edge will provide more of a tooth pattern for easier cutting.

What is sharp?
To understand sharpness you must first understand the definition of an edge. An edge is the line of intersection of two surfaces. A highly sharpened edge is one where the two surfaces are highly polished to form a very fine edge. Sharpening is the means to that very fine edge

There are countless ways of testing knives and tools for sharpness. We believe the easiest way to test sharpness is to use the tool or knife. If it doesn’t cut fast and cleanly, it needs sharpening. On a kitchen knife, the knife should be able to cut vegetables with almost no downward pressure. On a woodworking tool, the tool should cut wood fibers cleanly without leaving marks or crushing the wood fibers. On a fillet or skinning knife, it should be able to cut very quickly without having to saw through the meat.

If you really want to get down to fine-tuned levels of sharpness there are a few more tests you can use. My personal favorite is to take a piece of paper and hold it vertically. If you try to cut it with a dull knife, the paper will crumple beneath the knife. A sharp knife will cut it cleanly when use a slicing motion to cut through the paper. A razor sharp knife can cut the paper cleanly by just pressing down on the edge of paper without any slicing at all.

Another test is to shave the hair on your arms. While we recommend caution using this method, it can be very useful. A dull or even moderately sharp knife will just fold over your arm hairs without cutting. A well sharpened knife will cut almost all of the hairs in one pass. A very sharp knife will cut all the hairs in its path. This level of sharpness can only be attained using the finest abrasive materials.

Another factor effecting edge sharpness is the angle it is sharpened. The lower the angle, the sharper the blade becomes. However, the lower the angle, the weaker the edge becomes. Very low angle blades like a razor blade or a fillet knife will ultimately have a sharper edge than high angle tools such as an axe.

Keeping them sharp:

Once you’ve sharpened your kitchen knives keeping them sharp is as important as the sharpening itself. The normal wear and tear of just using your knives will dull them over time but a few simple tips can keep those edges sharp longer

Use the right cutting board.
The choice of cutting boards can dramatically improve your knife’s ability to hold an edge. The best choice for keeping your knives sharp is a wooden cutting board. The wood is soft enough that it does less damage to your cutting edge. The best cutting boards have the end grain facing up in a butcher block style. This style is durable but allows the knife to slide between the vertical wood fibers.

The next best cutting board surface is the plastic cutting boards. These board cutting boards are relatively easy on knife edges and are practical to use. Unlike a wooden cutting board, the plastic boards can be tossed into a dishwasher to sanitize it. These cutting boards are also available in many sizes and are priced economically.

The last choice in cutting boards would be the glass or marble cutting boards or cutting directly on ceramic plates. These cutting surfaces are just too hard for knives. Constant chopping and slicing on these boards will dull even the highest quality kitchen knives.

Properly Clean Your Knife
The process of cleaning your kitchen knives often results in unnecessary dulling. The biggest culprit is the dishwasher. In a dishwasher, the knife edges are much more likely to come in contact with other silverware or ceramic dishes. This banging around will cause small imperfections in your knife edge and dull it over time. The solution is to wash your knives by hand. Washing knives by hand also saves the handle material from the soaking and the high heat of a dishwasher. When washing knives by hand, avoid the temptation of soaking your knives in your cleaning water, in addition to possibly damaging the wooden handles, sharp knives are not something you want lurking in your cloudy dishwater. In addition, after your knife is properly washed, it’s important to dry your knife thoroughly before putting it away.

Storing Your Knives
Storage is another unnecessary culprit in dulling knives. A knife block or other knife holders are a last, but important step in maintaining sharp knives. Without proper storage, your knives can end up in a drawer where they can get banged around and dulled. Sharp knives can also expose you to unnecessary risk of cutting yourself while rummaging through your drawers.

Proper Knife Usage
In order to keep your knife sharp, it’s also important to avoid using it as a pry bar, hammer, screwdriver or any other tool. Knives should only be used for their intended purpose… cutting!

Knives are a commonly used tool that we often take for granted. We expect them to perform and cut with ease, but we rarely pay any more attention to our knives than that. To understand your knife, it’s important to learn about its construction and be able to identify the various knife parts.

First, it’s easy to divide the knife into two main parts, the handle and the blade. But each of those two parts, can also be subdivided into its parts. With the help of the photo at right and the descriptions below, you will better understand what components make up your knife.

Point – The point is the part of the knife where the edge and spine come together. The point is often used for piercing.

Tip – The tip is the forward part of the knife and includes the knife point. The tip is used detailed or delicate cutting.

Edge – The edge is the cutting part of the blade. It extends from the point to the heel of the knife.

Heel - The heel is the rear part of the edge, opposite the point.

Spine - The spine is the top of the knife blade, opposite the knife edge

Bolster - The bolster is the band that joins the blade of the knife to its handle. The bolster provides balance for the knife and also helps to protect the hand from getting in the way of the knife edge

Tang - The tang is the part of the blade that extends into the handle of the knife. It is the surface to which the handle attaches to the blade.

I got one, standard Remington 870 Police barrel is 18"....would have to measure it for the overall length.

The other one is a Remington 870 Police...but I have replace the normal 18" barrel, with a 12.5" barrel....which I had threaded for standard remingtom chokes......once agian, I would have to measure it for the overall length.

Since I'm more of a knife guy I prefer a big chopper. Its just a more flexible tool. You can chop the firewood, split it, and prep the food all with one tool. And it makes a servicable spatula/turner in a fix.

Ah ok, in the pic it looks like the barrel is about 6". Then I saw the shells, the vertical ones are standard length and the horizontal ones are shortened. The thought of a mini shotty like that is just too tempting. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

oh yea, back to the big chopper thing, its easier to carry. Not as blocky as a hatchet or small axe. Now a hawk, that opens up a whole new set of terms, its much more compact, but the small face can be a limiter.

Actually, The barrel on that shotgun is 8.5" the picture got a compressed when I made it into an avatar.

I have a K5 Hammer Poll Hawk and its a real beast. Aluminum handles, 3/8ths stock makes it chop like crazy. The beard part of the face has a sharpened underhook that is great for grabbing wood or hooking objects.

If I had my druthers, I'd have some G10 or micarta slabs made as a backup when its too cold to handle aluminum.
