WhereThe Heck Is Dan & Picture of Next Offering - 09/25/07 04:51 AM

I want to let you Dogs know that everything is ok and I appreciate the emails and concerns about my whereabouts.

I have spent a large amount of time in Ohio. Boss HOG added another building to his manaufacturing compound, leaving me access to his warehouse in the process. There is no way that I was going to miss out on such an opportunity.

While they were moving materials I was on the hunt and I found, discovered and dug up some really amazing stuff and it will be incorporated into our future offerings.

Speaking of offerings, here is the next knife to be released
.....................................................................
Drum roll please.........................

Re: WhereThe Heck Is Dan & Picture of Next Offerin - 09/25/07 05:46 AM

It starts with D and ends with LE and no one even came close to guessing it.
Ever since the YKLE and the original Mutt came out I said that the Mutt would be perfect with a full height grind and lo and behold here it is.

As much as I love the big choppers it is the heavy duty EDC knives that are the ones that are the most useful.

Thanks Dan

Re: WhereThe Heck Is Dan & Picture of Next Offerin - 09/25/07 06:07 AM

I feel your pain Klinkster, I SOLD my DF in a moment of weakness thinking I would just pick up a DFLE with what I got for the CG. I have come to regret that decision!

Dan do YKLE sheaths fit the new DMLE?

This is a great time to come out with an new knife as the canadian dollar is now dead even with the US dollar for the first time in my lifetime. It is like the price of every knife in the world just dropped 15% for Cold One ,Bramel Pitman ,Cablemomkey and I as well as every other canuk.

Gosh darn it Dan.. we sure have missed you. "silent tear runs down right cheek"

Seems like forever since we heard from you and had a blade to get excited about. Thank you so much for working your butt off to bring us the Mutt LE!

I love my SS-4 due to the EDC ease of carry, but truth be told I wear the Mutt at work and on the Sunday walks in the forest.

It is so perfectly balanced that I find myself reaching for it all the time!

I know we are all thrilled to see you post again and even happier to hear that your hard work will pay off in Yard Knives not just Military overruns.

The Mutt LE, great choice!!!

The Howler...my 3 inch dream come true!!!

The Dog Father LE....EVERY dogs dream come true!

Do you realize that if/when the Dog Father LE comes out to The Yard for sale that EVERY DOG will want at least one?
Hogs will be snapping them up 10 at a time for the secondary market."Frowns"

That model I believe will be the biggest selling blade ever for The Yard..excluding the Military stuff.

Thanks for the Dog food Dan!

We have missed our fearless leader to say the least.

Welcome home Dad.

Peace.

I am sure what will happen is he will release this new DMLE and I will end up buying one cause I have been chomping at the bit to get my hands on a Scrapyard, then shortly thereafter he will release the DFLE and I will be broke I wish they came at the same time. I also think Dan should make it to where you can only buy one of these blades per person to give everyone a chance and limit the aftermarket price gouging

SJ - he did say that at the original DM release - and said it would "never" be made again - so a bunch of us had said "an LE would be a different knife!" - looks like that wish came true. Dan did say that he'd used the last of the Basic handles though.

I hope he found some other cool stuff like some infi perhaps?

I did not like the DM at all but this new one has fixed everything I did not like which was mostly the blade geometry. Some people with big hands will have a hard time if they are the same tiny Basic handles.

I will get one or 5 depending on price. Actually I will almost certainly get at least 5.

Re: WhereThe Heck Is Dan & Picture of Next Offerin - 09/26/07 01:56 PM

Has anyone noticed that the Ratmandu is a reworked Dumpster Mutt? The Mutt is thicker. The choil and tang is different. The Rat lacks a penetrator tip. But the blade shape and saber grind look identical to me.

The functional difference is that the Ratmandu can slice. The Mutt is too thick for efficient cutting. It does have its place. I keep a Mutt in my urban emergency bag. As a compact entry tool and pry-bar that happens to have an edge, the Mutt is great. If a knife is first and foremost a cutting instrument, the Mutt leaves a lot to be desired.

The Dumpster Mutt LE may be an acceptable compromise. With a full height grind and “only” a Ό” thickness, it is certain to out cut the Classic Mutt. I hope it will match the Ratmandu. But the proof of the pudding is in the cutting.

I will probably try for at least one DMLE - 09/26/07 07:45 PM

Like many in this thread, I bought RatManDus (in my case, five of them because I missed the initial DM release, and secondary market prices were about the same as a new Rat). I've also said before that in general, I believe SR101 steel and thinner blades are superior to thick SR77 for short blades (< 6"). However, as others have said, I think that the full-height grind will make the DMLE a pretty good slicer and it's a great looking knife.

I suppose that, the price will determine how many I buy, but I'll want at least one anyway (I tend to buy in quantities of three, so that's what will probably happen). It's been surprising to me that the general tone about the DMLE seems largely negative. I know that many, including myself, had gotten expectations up about a DFLE, but I still plan to support the Scrap Yard. Remember, if you don't support the yard, then the terrorists win.

Drum roll please.........................

Specifications:

Dumpster Mutt LE
Full Height Flat Grind
.250 (1/4") thick
Satin Finished by hand

Comparison to the Dumpster Mutt Combat Grade
Saber Ground 2/3rd height

This will be a limited run. As always, I will provide a heads-up notices as well as the pricing.

I hope you find your wait worth while

Dan
I've been catching up on the posts. I honestly like this new Mutt better than the original. Depending on the price, I may or may not get one, since I have a DM and two RMDs. I think this is a beautiful knife.

I think the new Mutt is just the YKLE with Busse Basic handles and bigger choils. It kind of annoys me that now the supposedly very exclusive Blade show knife is now the new Mutt. I am pleased that Dan fixed the horrible obtuse edge on the Mutt
but I don't see why he would bother making an LE version unless he had a bunch of left over YKLE blades.

Handle is a downer for me too Bruce - I'd like to see a Mutt w/ a full size grip. This one will cut better, but since I have 2 Mutts, I'll likely hold off. Or I could send one to the 3rd World Grind Shop and have one w/out the logo (Incoming Vic!!)

I am going to be really bummed if they release those tan M6's anytime soon. I have been wanting one of those and finally bit the bullet and grabbed a black one off the exchange. I am pumped up the DFLE though, I will jump on that one.

Re: I will probably try for at least one DMLE - 09/27/07 08:05 PM

I agree about some of the above remarks about the handle size. I am not so concerned about whether the handles were supposed to have been gone or not. But, I feel the original DM's handle just felt a tad too small. Laid on top of the Yard Keeper or Res-C Howler grips, the Basic grip has the same dimensions and size, but it must be contoured and shaped a tad different because it sure feels a tad smaller - and the Yard Keeper / Res-C Howler were a little small for me. I tend to struggle with large gloves and usually need XL gloves.
However, the larger Res-C grip like on the Yard Guard / Camp Tramp / S6 / etc. I think would be too big for the DM.

A term I use a lot is "Grip Area". I define the grip area as the area between the two peaks at the belly of the handle.

On the larger Res-C handle, I measure about: 4.125"
On the smaller Res-C handles, I would say about: 3.625"

There is a half inch difference which is a big difference when it comes to knife handles.

The large one is great. I have never heard anyone complain about it's size.

The smaller one would do very well with just 0.125" more. 1/8" doesn't seem like much, but it is significant in a knife handle.

So, like 3.75" for the small Res-C handles.

I keep contimplating taking my Dremel to one of my small Res-C handles to see if I can reshape it. But, I am concerned I may make a mess with it (???).

Re: I will probably try for at least one DMLE - 09/27/07 08:12 PM

Dan always seemed to want to stay with simple and black. But, didn't some of the Blade West knives have some color?

Personally, in regards to Res-C, I don't like tan.

...... And I ALWAYS prefer a satin blade.

With mica^+a (got to watch my language ), I like tan quite a bit. But, DEFINITELY with satin blades then!
Same with sage. But, I like tan more than sage.

As much as I don't care for black coated blades, I really don't like tan, gray or sage coated blades . But, to each their own.

Re: WhereThe Heck Is Dan & Picture of Next Offering - 09/27/07 08:45 PM

Since I have three Ratmandu's and since I still don't have a DF since I have been waiting and holding out for a DFLE, I don't know how excited I am about the DMLE.
I love the RMD. And I actually sometimes prefer Mica^+a over Res-C.
But, I am sure I will have to have at least one DMLE - I love satin LE'S.

But also, if there is one thing I would change about the RMD, it would be to make the handle lighter. ...... Not that the RMD feels too handle heavy. But, I just would prefer the handle to be a little lighter. I love the shape and feel of the RMD and HRLM handle. Basic Res-C handles are not as nice to me as those two except in weight.
I have suggested skeletonizing the micarta handles. I personally think this would put many of the smaller to mid-sized Swamp Rat knives in a nicer/higher league of knife.

See the following link for my ideas: Concept Rats!!! - Rat Jack & Bog Dog II

But, that is more of a Swamp Rat forum topic.... (???).

--------

Anyway, am I the only one who noticed something in Dan's picture of the DMLE that I don't think I have seen anyone comment on...... If I am right, I think I really like it! (???) But, I think it may just be an illusion.

In the picture, it appears that the DMLE has a ZERO grind!!!

But, Dan didn't mention it in the description. I would think he would have mentioned it if it were true. A full flat zero grind is not easy to do on a full flat grind. - Actually probably fairly hard.

.....And of course hard for anybody else to sharpen and keep full flat. I think I would be interested to try. I am sure it would start to convex over time, but I like convex, so starting of full flat and becoming convex wouldn't bother me. It would probably be an EXTREME slicer if you could keep it sharp (???).
But, in addition to being harder to make, the edge strength wouldn't be as strong. Jerry's knife edges are usually VERY obtuse. This would be an extreme polar opposite for edges. So, I am fairly dubious it is what I am talking about (???).

This may just all be an optical illusion or just an unsharpened proto (??????) .

---------

It appears the choil is better than the original DM, but I still would prefer it to be even higher and more inline with the index finger recess in the main grip and I wish they would bring that choil in closer to the handle and add a little more blade edge..... ( - .... more like the Bog Dog and SS4!)

+1. I've got to agree with you again, KnifeGuy. My straight handled Satin Jack with a 6" blade is lighter than my RatManDu. Both knives are 3/16" thick and both have about the same blade width. So the difference has to be in the weight of the handles.

I don't have the older straight handled Satin Jack and my SJTAC is quite a bit different. But, I do have the SR Desert Jack which is basically the Swamp Rat version of the straight handled Satin Jack. The Desert Jack has a more curvy handle, so may not weight exactly the same. And it is possible that the blade thicknesses may be different between the Straight handled Satin Jack and the Desert Jack (????)

But, here are some specs:

Desert Jack (stripped).= 10.0 ounces; .175” thick; 6.0” blade; 11.25” oal
Ratmandu (G10).........= 11.0 ounces; .190" thick; 5.3125" blade; 10.5" oal
Ratmandu (micarta)....= 10.0 ounces; .190" thick; 5.3125" blade; 10.5" oal
DM....................= 9.0 ounces; .268" thick; 5.25" blade; 9.75" oal

The blade thickness of my Desert Jack is thinner. Plus, the handle height is less. I am sure these two factors pretty much account for the 6" bladed Desert Jack weighing the same as the 5.3125" bladed RMD.

Again, I don't feel that the handle weight is a big issue in the case of the RMD and HRLM. I just feel it would be a little better if they skeletonized the tang.
Personally, I do not like the excessively heavy handle on the M6. With much larger blades like say a Rat Mastiff, the handle weight of the M6 might be OK. But, I think the balance of the S6 is WAY better than the M6. To me, the M6 REALLY neads something done to the weight of the handle. Maybe it's just me (???).

I like the handle shape of the RMD a LOT. I would NOT want to change the shape of the handle. I would actually like to see it more often! So, skeletonizing is the probably the best option I know of.
A tapered tang would also reduce weight as a second option. But, I think skeletonizing might be better.

The RMD is pretty much the same blade as the MASSIVELY thick DM. But, notice the RMD weighs more. The difference in oal is due to the tiny little handle on the massively thick DM.

The DM weighs a LOT in the blade. And considering the DM is NOT a chopper, it is probably too blade heavy. The DMLE would likely be a big improvement.
But, to me, the RMD is a much nicer knife than the DM for my uses. But, there is something cool and unique about overly thick and chunky DM.

Re: I will probably try for at least one DMLE - 09/27/07 11:27 PM

BLD522, are you sure the blade shape is different? I have no experience with the original DM, but a saber grind can break up the appearance of breadth, due to the additional lines it creates along the length of the blade. The visual separation between the CG finish and that shiny, sharpened edge can also change the look of proportion on an otherwise identical shape, for the same reasons. I imagine if you take out the saber grind and blend its shiny edge back into the now Satin body, then angle the camera right (which means a schewed image from the angle AND possibly from a change in proportions which occasionally seems to happen in digital photos) the blade shape can seem quite different than the Original DM on the main page. To me a Satin Finish vs. the same CG always looks broader.

As an example, the Scrapper 6 looks different enough to me in these photos, and the first one isn't angled to the extreme that the DMLE shot is.

[Linked Image from scrapyardknives.com]

[Linked Image from img250.imageshack.us]

[Linked Image from i18.tinypic.com]

I've seen straight profile shot where a satin S6 is sitting next to an ASH and the S6 looks way more broad bellied than the first photo above, but I can't find the url.

Anyway, I hope I'm wrong. I love the way that DMLE looks in Dumpster Dan's announcement photo. It looks like a mini Camp Tramp, and I love the profile of that Camp Tramp knife!

Sorry if I caused confusion. What I meant to say is that the blade shape is different between a DM/DMLE and a YK, not between a DM and a DMLE. And I love the Camp Tramp too.
