I think so too. It's gonna be a Frenzy!
Seriously.. where else can you get a Chopper with those specs?? for that price?

Code
Steel Blade Overall Thick Width Handle Price
Battle Mistress INFI 10" 16" .25" 2"+ Micarta $387 new

Camp Tramp SR101 7 1/2" 12 1/2"	.25" ? Resiprene ~$250+

Battle Rat SR101 9 1/2" 14 1/2" .25" ? Resiprene ~$200+ ?

Dog Father SR77 10" 15" .275" 1.8"+ Resiprene $139.95 new

Camp Tramps are pretty desirable on secondary market.. not sure why Battle Rats have leveled out ..maybe time of year? (btw anyone know width specs?)

But that Dog Father looks to be a Bargain!

What does a Tops armagedon cost?
The K Bar birds head bowie is a good deal on a chopper.

Re: A Small Family Gathering Awaits . . . - 01/10/07 02:13 AM

Well I for one am looking to pairing my SS4 with the Bowie. Then I look forward to destroying stuff using only chopping and slicing motions. An odd couple, I think not.

And the warranty can't be beat.
And if you don't like it.. you can sell it for what you paid.. maybe a little bit more even.
THAT is unheard of these days!
those 2 things are what really drew me to this family of knives..

Well, I dunno about that. It’s only about $20 less than that Battle Rat was. I read that SR77 was more inexpensive than SR101, so I expected it to be somewhat cheaper. And the black and tan BRs were, what, like $118? So I don’t think it’s THAT amazing of a deal. But of course, those knives aren’t being sold right now, so, compared to what they’d cost in the secondary market it’s a good deal, but I don’t think it’s that much cheaper than the BRs originally cost.

I received my shipping confirmation notice this afternoon. My SS4 is on the way!!!

I don't know how long it will take to reach Sunny Southern California. I routinely receive first class mail from Florida in 3 business days, so it's possible it could show up on Saturday. But I'm not really expecting that. And, of course, Monday is a postal holiday. So it's more likely that it will arrive around the middle of next week.

Bruce...

It usually takes 2 days for me to get the knife from Scrapyard and I'm in Northern California.

why do they call it "rush hour"?? should be called "Bumper-to-Bumper from 3:30pm to 7:30pm Hour"!

Re: I N C O M I N G !!! - 01/19/07 01:35 AM

Andy, I agree with your pricing comments as BR's normally came with a sheath too I believe.. But for a huge decent carbon steel knife it's still pretty reasonable- and it would eat a CS TM for breakfast... (And look at Tops prices..)

Cliff Stamp said the best knife steel in the world is INFI (no argument there, he also said the res-C handle on the CT was nearly the perfect handle). If you don't get INFI you're not going to beat sr77 just keep the oil and Scotch-brite pads handy for the brown and black stuff..

Or get some Ren Wax and you don’t have to worry about Rust. But, I’ve still not oiled or waxed my Hawk, and I’ve still not had any rust problems with it. I think I’ve had SR101 rust more easily.

I may get the occassional Swamp Rat, or Busse, depending on the blade and price. However, like you many of mine will be Scrap Yards. It's hard to beat that price to performance ratio.

I'm going to give Ranger Knives another go, especially since they've revamped the RD line. I was put off on them initially because I got somewhat of a lemon RD-7 in my opinion and had little luck resolving it with Jason.

Yeah, I had some issues with the blade. Sharp in some area, flat dull in others. It was just a crappy grind and the coating was flaking off.

When I inquired about fixing it I was also interested in having him do a custom hatchet, similar to the RD Hawk. Anyway I'd write and hear nothing for a week then I'd send a friendly reminder about the issue and the hawk, then I'd get a response, I'd write back, wait a week etc... etc... Anyway after about two months of this I just threw my hands up in the air and said forget it.

I was unable to return the blade because I waited so long. I'll wait a bit longer and see how the new RDs are doing. If it doesn't appear that there are any issues with them then I may take another chance. I don't know. Right now the RD-7 sits in my trunk.

I was not favorably impressed with the RD-9 I purchased from them a couple of years ago. It is real tough, but not much good at anything except being a paperweight. I was not aware that they had revamped the line until you just mentioned it. So I just went and looked at their web site and the new RD line looks much nicer than the old ones. Maybe I'll try an RD-7.

What you needed was another light source from the other direction to get rid of the shadows. If you don’t have another available light source, here’s a tip that I sometimes use. Use a mirror to reflect light onto the dark area. If you don’t have a small handheld mirror for some reason, you can use some aluminum foil and tape it to some cardboard.

I'm not too good at this picture stuff. I will have a DF soon. Glad I got some Beckers while they were available. There's a BK-9 in this pic. I ground a double edge on the clip point because it supposed to be a Combat Bowie.
