Dolce & Gabbana condemned over knife ads
Wed Jan 10, 8:34 AM ET

Britain's advertising watchdog criticized Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana Wednesday for a campaign showing models brandishing knives.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), the industry regulator, upheld more than 150 complaints from people concerned that the stylized pictures glorified and condoned violent crime.

One of the two adverts, which appeared in the Times newspaper, showed two men threatening a man in a chair while another lay on the floor with a head wound.

It was printed last October next to an article about knife crime. There is widespread concern over the level of violent assaults in Britain.

A second advertisement in the Daily Telegraph newspaper featured two men supporting a wounded woman holding a knife.

The fashion label said the adverts, which appeared in newspapers and magazines around the world, were heavily stylized and were meant to mimic early 19th century art.

The pictures were designed to evoke the Napoleonic period of art, "emphasizing the theatrical effects of that genre."

In a written ruling, the ASA acknowledged the stylized nature of the pictures, but said they could still cause "serious or widespread offence."

"The ad could be seen as condoning and glorifying knife-related violence," the ASA said of the Times advert. "It was irresponsible."

"We reminded D&G of its duty to prepare ads with a sense of responsibility to consumers and to society."

Dolce & Gabbana said the adverts drew no complaints when they were published in China, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States.

Black pin-striped suit, black shirt, black tie, and black hat and socks and shoes. I found this picture over at BF.

Note the black tee-shirt, black jacket, and black FBM. Color coordination and a sense of drama.

I wonder how this picture would have gone over in Sheeple-ville.

Me? Nope. Don't wear it and have not seen it at Sportsman's Warehouse, or Walmart.

By the way, I was told it is French...Tarjais!

Yep, hot models and sinister blades for a calander! Why don't we get Scrap Yard and Dan to host a Photoshop competition a la Snap On? Which month do you want to reserve Dan? Strapless gown for September?

I usually get my clothes at Goodwill. I can get all those expensive fancy name brands for pennies on the dollar. Especially in the “high rent” districts. And some snooty people wouldn’t be caught dead in the same outfit twice, so they’re usually in good shape. Why pay more? The only problem is you never know what they’ll have, so you have to dig through everything.

Well, that just so happens to be my size. My suit coat is a size 50, but I think I could use a little bit bigger size. I bought a nice synthetic motorcycle jackett a 3xxxl icon Merc and it fits but it is skin tight. It works great sitting on the bike and the armour is like a fencing jackett. i would like a more comfy leather jackett for casual city riding.

You can’t find a deal everyday on eBay though, you have to make a saved search and check it frequently. But if you’re patient and keep an eye out, you can find some deals. Especially in the summer. Most people don’t shop for jackets then.

Oh, and another tip, when I searched for leather jackets, I only searched for Wilsons ones because I know they’re expensive and high quality, and that would weed out all the cheaper inferior import jackets from my search. Like the crap black “patch work” leather jackets that you’ve probably seen that are flooded on eBay.

Yeah, they look pretty crappy. Poor quality too, zippers, etc. I've seen them advertised in the Sunday coupon section for $30. I knew a couple people that bought one, and they were so frustrated by the lack of quality that they ended up throwing them away.

i'd have a couple crash axes for backup too.
Posted By: Andy Wayne

Re: Dolce & Gabbana condemned over knife ads - 01/13/07 05:16 AM

A SY Res-C AK47 would be GREAT! Very grippy. Especially important when you're whirling and twisting about with it to keep it from slipping out of your hands. Some crash axes would be good, you could throw them too. Speakin' of throwing...wouldn't some SR77 ninja stars be really cool! They could be pretty affordable too. Since there wouldn't be any handles (like knives have Res-C or Micarta) to add to the cost, and they wouldn't take that much steel to make. They could make CG crinkle coat, and LE satins. I'd buy some!

Res-C sr77 (so cheap enough to buy a pair!!) wakizashis for zombies I think! Or a SPAS 12... If you want to throw something try an african hunting throwing knife, that would be awesome...

Re: Dolce & Gabbana condemned over knife ads - 01/13/07 05:55 PM

Spas 12.. you Know the ammo would only last for the first couple waves.. then it's hand to hand! Best to don some sort of protection too. Would have to raid the local sporting goods store or Walmart..

Good plan! CS make some very economical throwers...

Re: Dolce & Gabbana condemned over knife ads - 01/15/07 01:36 AM

I have a carbon V CS thrower and it is one of my favorite knives. I even put a nice edge on it. The only problem is you can't get carbon V from CS any more.
Their new throwers are 1050 which is good but not the screamming deal the old ones were.

I had no idea there would be interest in throwing stars so I will take some
(bad) pics while I make one this week. I don't do my own heat treat so it will be a while before it is totaly done but I will definitly show you guys how she throws before I send her awy. I have a belt grinder for knives but I will do the star with just a angle grinder with a cut off wheel and bench grinder for those of you who only have basic tools.

i had an old ninja star from the 80's.. well Lots actually.. but my old favorite.. lemme see if i can find a pic..
[Linked Image from nitesedge.com]
..only chrome, and sharper. from the local strip mall ninja store (yep lots back in the 80's)
nothin to write home about..you could see the cheap stamped edges.. but man.. it stuck every time.. i'd hit Nails, Concrete.. bounced off everything.. that thing kept going! i miss it.

I have a Carbon V thrower but my only 1050 blade is the Sting from CRKT.
The carbon V is just as tough and has better edge retention to boot.
You don't really need edge retention on a thrower but it is nice if you put an edge on it and use it as a tactical knife. The carbon V thrower makes a wicked tactical knife because of the great blade shape and general toughness.

Yeah, I have several of them. I bought two of the FGX T handle knives, and I was disappointed in their quality. They’re certainly no Stealth Hawk. Like most of Cold Steel’s stuff, their quality is declining. They’re more interested in profits than quality. The T handles ones I bought were too bendy and thin. I have an older CAT tanto, and it’s much sturdier. Here most of my plastic knives. I have a few more, but I couldn’t find them all when I took the pic. I got my first plastic knife when I was about 12 or so. (1992)

This is another example of the hand ringing wooly minded society that looks to blame everything and everybody else rather than punish violent drunk/drugged people for thier actions.
Thats my rant over for the day I'm just getting grumpy waiting for the scrapper 6 to return

What's the weight on those? really light?
Do you have the Karambit one?

Yeah, they’re pretty light. I don’t have the karambit one.

Woa.. so the resin (grivory) kermabits are THAT weak??
that Stinks!

I was dissapointed with the grivory. It was too thin and bendy. It might be ok if they made it thicker. Typical declining CS “quality” (if you can call it that).

The tip on my kerambit snapped off taking it out of the bag. So, I got the Steel Tiger and it's pretty nice. It has the same feel, but the blade is steel. Wicked looking knife.

Well, it was just the very point of the tip. It would still do a mean job of slashing someone if it had to. I was just bummed that it was damaged before I could break it.
