I've started "collecting." :(

I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 07:16 AM

I realized that I've started "collecting" some knives. Which is unfortunate.

I've had knives my whole life, and used every last one of them. Then I got that blasted CGFBM almost a year ago, and I just never used it. I've always said I would, but didn't. It was the one knife I had that wasn't a "user."

Until a few months ago.

I got several SAKs, and then Amazon.com had Red Vic Farmers on sale for like $20, so I got several, and only opened one of them. I then set aside a couple of Vic Soldiers for my boys from their birth years. Then I got a few Spyderco users, but came across the "holy grail" known as the Lil' Temperance (Willieboy EDC's one - its an amazing and interesting looking knife.) They're so rare and collectible, that I just put it in my little safe. Then I fell in love w/ my Spyderco Manix - they're discontinued, so I got one more for a good deal - and its going to the safe as well. Then the DFLE and MOD7. I have a CGDF, and a Mutt - they're my users, and I see no reason to "replace" them w/ the new LE's - and I'm pretty confident that my two new scrappers will never see use. I also ordered a RAT Rail Splitter - limited to 500 pieces - cool little slip joint from a collaboration between RAT and Queen. Its got little to do with the value of the knife - I use my BATAC all the time, and my ASH1 is going to be a user as well.

I'm afraid I'm becoming a collector!

I blame it all on that CGFBM...

I have a handful of users amongst my "collection". I tried to pick out a blade to fill each role and in a spread of sizes.

Currently I have 8 users, the rest are safe queens... for now.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 07:40 AM

that sounds almost exactly like my story. cgfbm (your fault) saks (my fault) and spydies (spyderco's fault). those are the only brands i own in numbers greater than two. i've had many him imps and may get more but for the moment i'm down to two. down to one kershaw and two bucks. one camillus, one ranger, one cold steel (also my only machete), one boker. all my crkt's and gerbers are gone, excluding a multitool which i'm removing the blade from.

Good stuff Mag. Glad I could get you in to the FBM's - you're to blame for my SAKs and Spydies!

what did you do with the crkt's

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 07:58 AM

I will admit I have one safe queen, its a carbon V oss
Its not really a safe queen its just that I've never found a reason to use it
I only bought it because I thought I could carry it if I am ever infantry but now that I have a tan yard-hook that will never happen and my LMF II is a better choice than the oss anyways
some things that coldsteel makes are worthless
I could sell it tough, one went on ebay for about $200, not bad for the $90 I paid for it
my friend how is the son of a col. and thinks he has a free ticket to west point and will be a instant officer because he is the son of a col.(boy hes gona get a rude awakening) likes it though
coldsteel seems to atract alot of mall ninja's
the worst is hibben knives and frost cutlery, those two disigners are the laughing stock of the knife industry, all they produce is crap
I bet they dont even use their own blades
they have alot of "collectors" though

i cut them to fine shreds with my zdp-189 spyderco endura, then i rubbed it all into steel wool which i ignited with a spark from the edge of my CGFBM striking quartz and diamonds, whithout a dent or roll.

It's inevitable Dice. One good blade leads to another, and eventually there's just more blades than time. Then you decide to keep one unused because it looks so good or you want to save it for something special. And then you see another blade that you have to have.

NOooooooo! You need to send me that CGFBM and I will break it in. I will send it back to you and you will not have to feel the guilt of using it.

I have a few "non" users that I tried to use but they just did not work out. One is a stag handled Trailmaster, nice knife, tooooo thick! Then there is the stag handled Gerber, again no need for it and finally the stag handled Bear MGC bowie, tooo thin. They are locked away.

Knife collecting is caused by a virus that is transferred from the surface of steel directly to the brain. There is no known cure. It is treatable by buying random knives with no apparent theme or reason, but the side effect is "mindless accumulation" which is worse than "collecting".

I do that sort of thing all the time, apprentice. Except I usually wait until I have the money in hand before I purchase a new knife. Buying a knife on credit and trying to figure out how to pay for it later usually doesn't work out well for me . . . or my wife!

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm still within my means if I just choose to make payments, but I'd rather just pay off as much as possible as soon as possible. The knives I'm selling are all on the "I'll sell them someday" list anyway.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 08:20 PM

I like that term "mindless accumulation" Vic. I have been guilty of a certain amount of mindless accumulation with firearms, firearms parts, knives, and outdoor gear as well. I would not consider myself a collector, but I do have quite a few knives that I have not used yet.

I tend to have the same line of thought as Bors. There is no way I can go out and use all of my knives other than to take pictures and do a basic review. It's not for a lack of wanting, just the reality of being where I am at in life. I use some of my knives pretty hard, but between a full time corp job, a couple of part time gigs, my family, dog, cat, floating my Jeep, I don't have much time to use every single knife I own. I will use all of my knives for a real purpose at some point in my life, I just don't have the luxury to do that right now.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 09:27 PM

Thanks for all of the support, guys!

My New Years resolution will be to make no more than one knife purchase in a given month - I've got to get bills paid down by the time I graduate - which is May - so my knife addiction will have to be toned down a LOT.

Credit Cards are a way of life for me now, as a married student w/out a real job - but my credit is excellent, and my APR is under 6%. Better for me to do well in school than try and work full time and go to school, which would result in not seeing my kids much, etc...

I blame some of you guys - personally - for a few of my addictions.

Jeepsrock and Magnum22 in particular, for the Victorinox and Spyderco addictions I have had lately - I think you both owe me money.

I'll try to stay away from the "mindless accumulation" - which is a great term - although I got in to it with the SAKs a little bit (they're so cheap though!).

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 10:55 PM

Consider these interesting factoids if you will.

The future value of $100 invested at the beginning of each month at 9% for 10 years is $19,497.

The future value of $100 invested at the beginning of each month at 9% for 20 years is $67,290.

The future value of $100 invested at the beginning of each month at 9% for 30 years is $184,447.

Considering these numbers, it makes sense to get on the other side of debt/equity relationship. After all, if one can afford to make credit card payments, they can obviously afford to save. It's all a matter of discipline and delayed, rather than instant gratification.

Sorry guys, but numbers just speak to me.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/29/07 11:22 PM

Bill - I will be talking to you more here in a few months about investments, etc. I do stick $$ in CD's and savings for my boys as well - and they have whole life insurance policies, etc (which I may change?). I should be out from under my CC debt as soon as my taxes are done - 3-4 more months of interest, and I should be good to go. My savings account has saved my bacon on a few occasions, particularly during my transition to college - but its getting pretty low now! When I was in the Army, I was debt free and saving $500 a month. Now that I'm a student I'm just trying to break even at some point during the year, but still save $$ for the boys. It would be possible for me to cash in on what I've put aside for them and wipe out my debt now - but its more important for me to have that money set aside for their futures and not even think about playing the "I'll pay them back later when I'm making more money" game, because its unlikely that I'll ever find a good time to pull $8k to replenish their savings!

Dan, I am not licensed in Montana. Therefore, I cannot talk specifics with you. I cannot solicit business in Montana and must be very careful not to cross any lines. I think I can talk over the basics with you, without going to jail. I am going to consult with the Office of Supervisory Jurisdiction to make make sure I understand where the line has been drawn. If it turns out I cannot be of sufficient help to you, I can hook you up with someone in Montana who can be of help. You have my office number Dan, feel free to call me any time.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/30/07 01:40 AM

listen,i totally can relate but you gotta except the fact that its o.k. to collect.

some of these knives, while combat grade and tough as hell are absolute works of art.its the fact that their so tough that eats at you because you can imagine how well it will perform.others are just rare and imo youd be foolish to use.i had so many things as a kid that would be worth big cake if i didnt use and abuse them just having fun and i've learned my lesson.

i will not use any of my SY LE'S.i have an LE dm and df but i also have them both in cg so why do it??....yes,the dfle feels a little better in my hand but to me its not worth it.

ideally if i had the money i would buy 2 of everything from the busse family.one to use and another to safe queen but i cant do that.

remember, their aint no rule that says you have to use every knife you buy.especially as a "knife guy".its only natural that you cherish and protect your finest, rarest pieces.nobody drives a collectable car in the snow...thats why they have winter rats.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/30/07 09:40 AM

It was not that long ago I was looking for one really good quality fixed blade and I had my eye on the S6 but the SS4 came along and I decided to pick it up. It was a bit smaller than I was looking for but would probably be fine as my only quality knife when paired with a hawk or axe. Needless to say it has become an addiction.
I really want one of each kind of knife now. Instead of just buying Busse or Scrappers I am trying to collect one of each type of blade ,hopefully an excellent example as well. I always get a spare scrapper for trades also.

I have a nice katana ,a first rate WW2 FS Dagger ,a Emerson Commander(Waved) for my tactical folder ,a Lambert custom for my custom linerlock/gentsknife ,a Spyderco Police for my concealed MBC fighter ,and a Scrapyard HookGuard for a fixed survival knife ,a Strider ED neck knife ,a spyderco Yang kitchen knife ,a Swarden fixed EDC and I have not decided whether the YKLE or MuttLE will be my bushcraft knife.

I still need a scandi ,probably a Helle anniversary. My bowie should be here next week. My Chinook3 is a MBC(martial blade craft) knife that was designed to be used in the same style as a bowie. I will still need a companion knife for the DFLE. Pretty much all these are users. I will even use the FS if I have any sentry's to take out. The problem with this collecting strategy is there are millions of types of knives. I still NEED a good kukuri for example. Also the FS Dagger triggered a love for antique knives. That is a great hobby if you find new knives are not draining your savings fast enough

When I bought that first Scrapyard SS4 I went back to the CGN(Canadian gun nutz)
site to show it off. There was a really nice guy there named Cold One who rather liked it.

Hey Diceman, regarding investing, check out a book called The Richest Man in Babylon. I took some classes for my degree at school like financial managment, personal financial planning, principles of investment, and other related classes. That book was one we had to read. It’s easy to understand, and has a lot of good info.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Richest_Man_in_Babylon_(book)

http://www.luinc.com/elibrary/rmb/richestmaninbabylon.pdf

First, you should save 10% of all you make to invest in yourself and your future. Use the time value of money to your advantage while you’re young. For short term investing, look around and find the highest rate you can for a savings, money market, or similar type of investment. You might be able to make a better investment by personally investing in undervalued items for sale locally that you could sell on eBay, etc. You should have 3-6 months cost of expenses in liquid assets for emergencies.

Inflation averages about 3% a year. If you just stick cash in a jar, it will lose value over time. So, you need to find an investment for your cash that has a return of 3%+ just to break even. I have a PayPal Money Market account that currently earns 4.64%. Personally, I make better returns by reinvesting my money in more things to sell.

For longer investments (5-10 years) put your money in the stock market. Historically, the total of the entire NY stock market since inception averages out to 12-13%. Minus the rate of inflation, that’s like 10% return average per year. To diversify your portfolio, you can buy shares that encompass the whole market through Vanguard or similar companies. To realize returns this high though, you need to invest for 5-10 years (7-10 is better) to adjust for the fluctuations in the market and average returns near this high.

First you should be saving for your retirement. You can in 2008 put $5000 a year in a Roth IRA. The money grows tax free (because it’s already taxed income) and you can withdraw it tax free when you retire. Every year you should put the most you can in a Roth IRA for retirement. You can get whole market shares for your Roth IRA, and average around 10% returns with the profit reinvested until you’re older. As you age, you diversify your portfolio with less risky (but lower return) bonds, precious metals, etc. before you retire. You can easily retire a millionaire or richer if you’d like. It’s all a matter of having the discipline and getting your financial house in order, and saving early and using the time value of money to your advantage.

It cost me many, many, thousands of dollars to learn this info. I hope it helps you.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/30/07 11:06 AM

Oh, another thing I forgot, money saved is money earned. If you have any debts with a higher rate than you can find as an investment, pay off the debts first.

Re: I've started "collecting." :( - 12/30/07 11:35 AM

Thats good advice Andy. Right now might be a good time to buy property in the US with the market so depressed. Just as long as it is not in an area where there has been lots of speculators "flipping" property as they are still overvalued. I don't expect the stock market to behave the way in the futre as it has in the past because all the baby boomers are going to retire at pretty much the same time and take their money out and the following generations won't be doing as much saving(ie investing).

You know who probably made a enormous amount of cash in the last couple years is Jerry Busse. Good quality steel has gone through the roof in price and he liked to buy bulk and stockpile it. The kind of tool steel he likes is what has gone up the most because it is needed for construction and hi tech projects.

So Andy you couldn't sleep either?

Andy - good stuff. 10% should be pretty easy to set aside. I'd also like to invest as well, as soon as I've got most of my debt paid down. The CD's for my boys pay 6% in 9 months, which is pretty good. I'll check out the book. Another one I've been meaning to read is "Rich Dad Poor Dad."

Ted - I thought that Bruce was going to tell you to jump off the top of the Empire State Building - and if you lived, to go buy a lotto ticket.

I've spent maybe... $7 in my life on Lotto? So far I haven't won anything!

Lance - My wife wants to flip houses. When I'm done w/ school, she wants to be a carpenter/finisher (I don't know anything about that stuff) and do some realestate investing.

Let's see, become a rock star, win the lottery or marry a rich girl, hmmm. I failed at being a rock star, I purchase less than $10 a year in lottery tickets and I did not marry a rich girl. Hmmm.....

That was what I intended to do as well - rock star or marry rich.

My band is too lazy for us to get famous. Maybe my wife will win the lottery, then I will have married rich.

I try not to remind her that I have 1/2 Million $$ in life insurance on myself... I could have an "accident" and she'd end up rich!!!

I read somewhere that most lotto winners go broke within 7 years.
It is because they have no idea how to save money or they would not have bothered buying lotto tickets.

Hmm, I've hung out with rock stars(not the life for me), I've had 5 of 6 numbers on the Lotto twice and been off by only one number on one of those times. I know two people who have won Lotto(one of them takes out a loan at the end of every year to make it to the next installment) and I missed out on marrying the only girl who could put up with me(she broke up after inheriting $2.5 million, maybe she couldn't put up with me) I don't mind missing out on the money, but I've never gotten over the girl.

Ted - I thought that Bruce was going to tell you to jump off the top of the Empire State Building - and if you lived, to go buy a lotto ticket.
That's close. If Ted jumped off the building and landed in the Dixie cup without removing his blindfold, he'd win both the Lotto and PowerBall. Of course, he wouldn't be alive to enjoy the proceeds. But his heirs would be set for life!

If Ted jumped off the building and landed on the Dixie cup, the poor SOB holding it is gonna be dead too. I ain't a little guy

I have alot of knives that are still mint, but i wouldn't consider myself a collector. Just haven't had the opportunity to use them all yet. In my mind all my knives are earmarked as user status.

Wiggity - thats how I started w/ that CGFBM... exactly! I planned on using it. There were a couple of days where I almost took it out but grabbed the DF instead.

Then something changed.

Be careful.
