Scrap Yard Knife Company

Spring Fever

Posted By: Dumpster Dan

Spring Fever - 04/06/08 04:16 AM

I think we need to get out and greet the spring.

So I will put up a free knife from our next release for the Dog who takes out one of their ScrapYard knives and snaps a unique picture of it in action.

Each submission will be reviewed by the ScrapYard staff and a winner will be chosen on May 1st. This is subjective so any picture can be submitted (keep it clean). You are more than welcome to submit as many pictures as you would like.

Now get busy and have some spring fun

Dan

Yeah, that should do it...

What a cool way to celebrate spring. I can hardly think of anything more fun than running around the great outdoors with some Scrap Yard Knives and a camera.

At first I thought Gravelface had it sewn up with his picture of cutting "Big Al's" umbilical cord, but he used a Busse Combat knife, NOT a Yard Knife. Whew!!!

Tom.....it would have been mine....I might go scout around the Hospital and ask the expecting mother if she doesn't mind me doing the same!?

It does deserve an Honorable Mention at least!

So, where do we post our entries? As I am alone, it is hard for me to do the pics "in action". But when I think of action, I think of chopping and splitting with the ultimate big knife, the DFLE.

The DFLE chopped down this dead pine tree.

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]

And split this fire wood over at the fern stump.

Well, it does at least look like Spring. The rain has brought the wild ferns back.

Springtime in Missouri and the Forsythia is looking fine!

[Linked Image from i184.photobucket.com]

My wife had to raise me up in my tractor's front loader bucket to trim more ice damaged branches.

[Linked Image from i184.photobucket.com]

The DogFatherLE was perfect for close in trimming!

[Linked Image from i184.photobucket.com]

Clouds kept blocking the sun, but the DogFather chopped on!

[Linked Image from i184.photobucket.com]

These branches were a little lower, so I only had to stand on my tractor tire.

[Linked Image from i184.photobucket.com]

A little bit better picture.

More pictures to come......

P.S. That thing poisonous Pit? According to this reptile/amphibian museum I went to in Costa Rica, all snakes with the 2 large scales on top of their head are poisonous. You seem like a sane person and don't look very worried about it so maybe my information is bad. I'd probably leave it alone anyway though My dogs don't have that much sense though and if it went for them I'd have to kill it.

that may be true in costa rica (although i doubt it) but in north america there are only rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, copperheads, and coral snakes that are venomous. pit's in good shape there

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 04:22 AM

hehe I was also told when I was little you could tell if they were poisonous by they way they swam, either flat or with their head sticking out of the water. I grew up around VA Beach so we had plenty of water moccosins(same as cotton mouth I think) and non-poisonous water snakes too. a few copperheads, and supposedly some rattlesnakes and coral snakes, but I never saw any in 10 years there. Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 04:28 AM

hahaha... yeah, we've got all kinds of "anti-snake" advice and scare tactics that get thrown around. regardless of one's personal beliefs, let's presume that human evolved with venomous snakes. well, then it would make sense that those with a healthy fear of snakes would live to reproduce, and possibly pass on that healthy fear of snakes. if life really started in africa, this makes a whole lot of good sense... have you ever met a person who was naturally unafraid of snakes?

at any rate, i'm not arguing anything but that there is a TON of misinformation out there about snakes. but you're right, water moccasins are cottonmouths

Non-venomous true, harmless....well you had better ask pit Jr about that as it took about 10 minutes before he could get one to let go of his hand !!!

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 07:27 AM

ahhh yes the classic "is this snake gone kill me?" question I rember it going something like this

-If red touches yellow you are a dead fellow.
-But if red touches black you are all right jack.

Coral snakes seam to be very slender and skiny
Posted By: swizzle

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 04:42 PM

"red and yellow kill a fellow" works without fail in north america, but not in the tropics or south america...

coral snakes are actually, possibly, the most toxic venomous snake in the states. they have a NASTY neurotoxin (as opposed to hematoxins(?) in rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths). to be bit by a coral snake would be horrendous, but they are actually very docile animals and because of their size, would only be able to get their jaws around your pinky, nose, little toes... so they don't pose that great a threat to adults.

nice pix ksjumpmd!

I always heard it as: Red to yellow, kill a fellow, red to black, venom lack.

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 08:22 PM

red on yellow, kill a fellow
red on black, friend of jack

I don't remember why the king snakes were so good though. I guess they kill pests like ladybugs do.

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 08:26 PM

just noticed that coral snake has the 2 big scales. maybe they said all poisonous snakes have the 2 big scales, instead of all snakes with the 2 big scales are poisonous. You are a WildMan KS! what are you doing with that thing? scary as it is, I don't think its any match for that dogfather, long as you've stayed away from the JWB
Posted By: swizzle

Re: Spring Fever - 04/10/08 08:48 PM

darkaether- the coral snake is an elapid (family that has king cobras and mambas) and one of the key features of elapids are the large scales on their head, not to mention that they are all horribly venomous. this doesn't fit for vipers, who are also terribly venomous, but tend to have small head scales, like this guy:

[Linked Image from ryanphotographic.com]

i think that you were probably told that piece of information by someone who only had half the story. you can certainly use head scales to tell if a snake who looks an awful lot like a venomous snake is venomous or not IF you know the scale patterns of the venomous snake.

there's no hard and fast rule here.

Well, I hiked a bit of the Appalachian trail around Sunfish Pond on Saturday. Love the whole Delaware Valley and that area in general, especially spring time and fall. Here are some pics of the Mutt on the trail.

Enjoy the week!

Some shots from this past week. Ended up being on the road during some beautiful April weather:
[Linked Image from img233.imageshack.us]

Unfortunately the weather went from above freezing to quite cold in a very short time. As a result the roads had water on them while the air temperature was below 20 degrees. This was the result:
[Linked Image from img233.imageshack.us]

As you can see, I couldn't actually turn the wheel very far before the ice would stop it!

The handle is wrapped in 113lb catfish dropline, its usefull for making snares and adds grip to res-c.

Re: Spring Fever - 05/01/08 03:16 AM

fishing line?
cool idea, I'd think it'd hurt your hands after a while... but it looks like you've got it wrapped pretty good.

Posted By: macgregor

Re: Spring Fever - 05/01/08 03:29 AM

Yeah it really tight and its not really fishing line.
More like lightweight nylon cord.
So its not fishing line.
Posted By: eatingmuchface

Re: Spring Fever - 05/01/08 03:33 AM

lol
yeah 113lb test sounds pretty hardcore.

you can use that for alot of stuff... and you can make fishing line even STRONGER by braiding it, (obviously you can get braided line too)
my friend made a dog leash out of fishing line one time. (he braided three strands of braided 50 lb test together)

so you could like freaking use it for a hammock or something if you had enough.
(obviously you wouldn't, but, if you had to make something to take your wieght or something like that it'd be pretty cool)

(sorry for hijacking)

Re: Spring Fever - 05/01/08 10:06 PM

here it goes...
since each pic will be looked at individually, some may be kind of similar, just different in one way (change of camera view ect.)

I cleared a little trail to get to some wood for the DFLE to chop and bring up into my yard.
the DFLE did take every single branch down with one stroke. they were about 1" thick)

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

its kind of awkward down there.
and REALLY steep.
[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

(I could have easily gone through these in one chop, but it's hard to swing full force and hit right when they're so low the the groud.)
[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i214.photobucket.com]

I think they're a decent blend of artsy shots and action shots.
if only my sister felt like coming down onto the river bank.

I have a Canon A550. I don't really have any night vision with IR illumination. I just increased the brightness, reduced the contrast, and went to a green tint. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Probably. I just don't ask anymore. I'm probably breaking some stupid law by drinking a Schlitz and typing this post. No man's life, liberty, or property are safe when the Georgia General Assembly is in session. Darned Atlanta Taliban.

Re: Spring Fever - 05/02/08 05:35 AM

photoshop is great for making collages (like what w/d did with his two pictures) and creating art or doing very basic image editing (cropping, reducing file size, etc.) but once you start actually messing with levels (more than just making something sepia or applying basic filters... which gets BORING after one photo) then most people just mess up their pictures instead of enhancing them.

Re: Spring Fever - 05/04/08 03:20 AM

It was a great outing. Bonnie moved out to live with her aunt about a month ago. I just took her back there. She is happier there with her mother's sister (her mother passed away when she was 10). Her sister, Linda is staying with an ex-girlfriend of mine who loves to shop. I have accepted all this for now. Bonnie wanted to go outside today and "do something exciting" like ride the Harley. I told her that I had been wanting to go to Oyster Shell Hill down in the swamp for over a year, but no one would go with me. She said she was up for it, so off we went. She was impressed my the old man's ability to navigate with a compass and hit every creek crossing dead on. She took a picture of me crossing Lewis Creek on the log, but it didn't come out. I am tired, but very happy. I was a great day to be in the Altamaha!

The DFLE proved to be very useful. I had to hack through limbs while crossing other creeks and slash through thick bamboo in some places. Try that with a little bitty knife! I lost part of my lanyard and beads while climbing over a log over a creek.

A great question. We have had two staff meetings to review the entries. There are so many good choices that the staff is still working through the submissions for a final winner. It looks as if we will need to have a couple of runner up prizes.

Stay tuned for the final winner, a picture of the next offer and first place prize.

I can tell you that the Dogs really have spring fever. We should have the winner named in the next two days
