Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offering - 05/12/08 04:11 AM

I did some major dumpster diving to bring you numbers & letters. The next ScrapYard offering will be The Mud Puppy. It is a serial numbered, Limited Edition made of 154 CM. It sports the mudder grip that makes it a great feeling knife.

The following are the specs for the Mud Puppy Limited Edition (MPLE):

Overall Length: 8 1/4"
Blade Length: 3 1/4"
Blade Thickness: 3/16"
Steel: 154 CM
Hardness: 58-60 Rc
Finish: Satin
Handle: Resiprene C "Mudder Grip"

I will be taking a small quantity of the lower numbered knives to the Blade Show while also making them available in the shopping cart on our site…more details to follow.

Enjoy
Dan

Fantastic idea! A small knife for folks with large hands. I am so glad to see the return of the mudder grip on mudder's day! And in satin 154CM, too. Somebody's been paying attention to the folks. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Is it tan? That would be awesome. I almost can't tell from the photos, but I hope it is. It looks like an awesome EDC and may be my first SY. You got my full attention and looking forward to more details!!

Edit: The more I look at it, the more tan it looks, yeah! I'm one happy guy right now. I'm suppose to go run for an hour, but now my butt is glued to the seat. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

I like the blade shape, too. The mudder handle just works for me. Maybe we will see another SS4 in 154CM? This is very good news. What's the price?

Nice. I'm not to thrilled with the location of the 154 CM stamp though. I'll have to knock the dust off my internet connection for this one. I'm gonna call out Cold One and Kraz on this one. This is the first SYKCO offering where ordering speed REALLY makes a difference.

Who's gonna get #1??

First, let me say you also have great taste in pistols.

That's a fine looking knife Dan, one I'm sure the dogs will gobble up. Though I myself will likely pass since I'll have some infi damage to my cc soon.

So there will be an extra one or two for the folks that have been waiting so long for such a thing. Enjoy fellas!

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/12/08 05:06 AM

i havnt been on in a few days and i just had a feeling a release might be today.

with the hairy carry release i had a feeling something like this would happen.

as much as i like my 1/4in thick, big fat battle blades i think its really cool to get some good stainless in the busse kin mix.

between this and hairy carry it looks like we got our selves a little family rivalry.

from just looking at it this could very well be scrapyards coolest knife imo.

with the "TAN MUDDER" mixed with a satin finish that wont rust in an every day carry package and with the SY logo and LE numbered like the busses the coolness factor is through the fricken roof.

thanks scrapyard for such a cool knife.i will obtain one by any means neccesary.
...lol

Oh and Ted, I am going to Blade to snag one. Plus I am bringing a bottle of JWB... I am expecting that will help in acquiring a nice low number... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

tedwca, thanks for posting a larger picture. I agree, I'm not thrilled about the "154cm" stamp (to large and dark perhaps?), but other then that, I'm all over this knife. I'll also get my hands on one no matter what! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/12/08 07:38 AM

This is a freakin brilliant knife!
I love my SS4 and always felt bad for the guys who missed out but I did not see S7 as a great steel for that type of knife. I had suggested SR101 but in many ways the stainless is a better choice. I also love the shape of the blade and the 3/16th thickness. It is a gutsy move with the Scrapyard warranty.I bet the reason it took so long for the numbers and letters had to do with testing and heat treating ect?

Does anyone else think this will be the perfect companion blade for the DFLE?
I can say goodbye Inyoni. I am going to need a leather sheath to match my DFLE rig now Jeff. It is even shiny like the DFLE and perfect for food prep and other chores the DFLE is a bit big for.

That is a really cool lighter in the photo. Does anyone know what kind it is?

That is Absolutely Freakin' Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!!! - One of my dreams has come true!!!

.... Now for one of my other dreams - having a billion dollars <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I LOVE this knife!!!! I don't know if I can go to sleep now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

- EXCELLENT blade shape - About as perfect as possible for this knife IMO! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
- VERY handy size,
- MUDDERS - that fit and feel AWESOME!!!!
- Satin!!!!!
- Full height flat grind
- Great / appropriate thickness
- 154CM is a Great Stainless steel for a knife this size with the benefit of stainless. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

FLAWLESS / Perfect Knife!!!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I can't afford water right now, but I WILL have one or two of these!!!!

**** This is a knife I wish I could afford a box full - so I could have them everywhere. Every car, Tool box, desk, kitchen, garage, Etc. AND a few spares! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

My SS4 has been a HIGH ranking favorite against ALL knives and ALL brands in my collection.

This is VERY likely (Highly probable) to put some hurt on my SS4. And that is a GOOD thing and VERY Impressive accomplishment!

Personally, I can't imagine anyone thinking they would skip on this!

........How much can I get for a kidney?

Even then, two perfect small knives are better than one! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I'm looking forward to that knife. That booze in the picture must be pretty rare; the only reference I've found was in a 2003 Washington Post article: Odyssey of Frustration

Here's the excerpt (from page 5):
"Its Christian owners called it Asriya Anis Arak. Acting director Janan Roger Lassow showered Allison and his men with hospitality, escorting them around the family-owned distillery and attempting to press them with gifts of arak, the company's anise-flavored liqueur."

Other than handle materials, the knives are nearly identical and could readily substitute for one another in any real-world application. ......Otherwise, unless Dan sells the MPLE for the same price or higher than the HCLE, the advantage easily goes to the MPLE.)

To me, there are plenty of distinguishing factors in design between the HCLE and the MPLE.

No doubt they could overlap in use and substitute for each other. But, I think there are enough subtle differences to keep me from calling them "nearly identical".
And they are different enough to make me want BOTH! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I love well designed smaller 3.25" - 4.0" bladed knives.

From the pictures, the HCLE and MPLE both have LOTS of great merit! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I will have to have an HCLE. As much as I LOVE mudders, I am pretty impressed with what appears to be a very well shaped handle on the HCLE. - An apparently slimmed/scaled down HRLM handle with improved choil should be excellent for the HCLE. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
I am not so sure about the full legth swedge on the spine. But, it isn't a huge detriment to the knife either and I can likely round it over or flatten if I prefer. - Easier than the easy HRLM choil mod.
Both handles should be EXCELLENT in their own way.

But, it appears to me that the MPLE has a couple of subtle advantages in my book. And positive compromises between the two in other ways.

Mud Puppy is a much cooler name than Hairy Carry too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Now, thanks to Andy, every time I see the name "Hairy Carry", I keeping visioning this:

Mud Puppy conjours better images for me. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

But, honestly, names don't mean much to me.

Looks like another small knife to add to the collection!! Me likey!

I can't order the HCLE and not then get the MPLE (I like the Mud Puppy name a lot). Fortunately it's my small knives that get out of the house onto the hills, so I can justify this little addition- plus the wife can finally adopt my SS4 as I'll have this instead! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

hmmm this would be a great com-panion blade and I don't have many knives with a steel like this so I might go for it... since I am planning on selling some knives (which I could use for the s7 release) and I have about 140$ now...
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I think I just might...
I noticed how Dan made it satin, a not overly large choil, not too much belly, (which is good for "slicers") SATIN, MUDDERS AND IT's Tan!
I don't see how you could have done it any better.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

just give me under 140$ price point (I'm almost sure it will be) and we're good to go!

+1

Personally, honestly, the color isn't my favorite. I just like simple ole' plain black for Res-C.

On some micarta's, I sometimes like some of the "darker" natural brown micarta or sometimes even green canvas. But, green only on micarta. I don't tend to care for green in any other knife material I know of.

Some of the Tiger-Hide Busse knives look spectacular "IF" buffed up to a nice satin or better finish.

But, Plain, Simple, Solid, Black is Classic for me - especially on Res-C and G10. And I don't tire of classic or Black. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

But, as Jeff said: "no matter". I love the "feel", shape, size, etc. of mudders. So, I know I will like it in the hand.
And I love the blade, shape, size, proportions and everything else about the knife. So, I can live with the handle color (even if I would prefer black).

I have seen quite a few pics of "Muddy" Camp Tramp and Battle Rats. I don't know what you call that color. It isn't quite tan IMO, but sort of. I definately wouldn't call it gray. Maybe Putty or taupe or something (????????).

Hmm, this one seems nice but its not my thing. Its just a bit too small for me to believe that a fixed blade is necessary. But whats with all these LE's anyway? Anyone remember when the last new, Combat Grade knife was released? I think its about time for SY to return to the roots the company is built on: strong, inexpensive, military and survival knives like the S6 and DMCG.

But suit yourselves, the knife is beautiful for what it is.

Since I have pre-ordered a Hairy Carry, I don't know for sure if I'll get the Mud Puppy. Darn that Swamp! If the price is right, I probably will. The mudder handle fits my big paws perfectly and though I am not usually fond of 3" fixed blades, I like the shape of this one a lot.

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/13/08 03:47 AM

I was thinking the same thing, YKCG.

The MPLE can't replace knives like the S6 or DMCG, but this knife is unique and probably something we won't see too often here at the yard. With interest of Scrap Yard knives growing, and once Dan and the family settles in, I think we will see more knives like the S6 and DMCG. With the release of the HCLE from the swamp, I think it is very cool that the yard is coming out with something similar. The tan colored mudder handles, satin stainless steel, EDC size, and backed by be yard, I say we got a very special knife, and I cannot wait to get my paws on one.

Pre-Ordering isn't a "NEW" concept. Swamp Rat has done it before.

The Crash Axe was sold via Pre-Orders..... And the Crash Axe could be argued as the beginning of Scrap Yard in some way.

Blade Show Special...Swamp Rat Crash Axe- Pre-order Now!

I don't know if Busse has used Pre-Ordering in the past or not. I don't follow Busse as much, but I wouldn't be surprised.

........ obviously, I prefer the pre-order option for many worthy reasons. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

When you place an order directly from Busse Combat, as opposed to the BCS (which sells product that's on-hand) or a BladeForums 'ganza (where knives are sold as if the quantity is fixed, but delivery may take weeks, which has never made sense to me), it's a pre-order. Months may pass before they charge your card and send your order. I can only recall ordering from BC once, for a pair of Sus Scrofas; after a few weeks of seeing knife designs that I liked better but couldn't buy because I didn't know when that SS order would hit, I canceled. A long-delay sales model must be successful or Jerry wouldn't keep doing it, but I don't have the patience to wait for months. In my opinion, the time between a placing an order and receiving it should never exceed 6 weeks -- any longer gives the customer too much time to become frustrated and/or back out.

Mac - I'm willing to proxy for you if you would like. Just to give you an idea of cost, it adds up to: Cost of knife
Georgia sales tax (~7.5% ?)
Shipping cost - about $8.00

So, once Dan posts the price you will know about how much is involved. Tom

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/14/08 04:13 AM

i wouldn' be surprised if every time the swamp and yard release similar knives, the rats take pre-orders. i know if the knives were sold on the first come basis and released simultaneously, i'd run to the yard every time. some would most of us here. that would hurt the swamp pretty bad.

i am also surprised that since the yard was established, people are still finding gems in their busse clan collections from the swamp like the rmd. it has nothing to do with being surprised by the knife, it's the people.

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/14/08 08:31 AM

I liked Rats for small blades and Dogs for large ones but the stainless has ruined that rule. I will be picking up a couple HC's because I love the design and G10.
The HC might even end up as my DFLE's companion knife because I like as tin as possible so the piggyback sheath does not stick out to far although the Muppy seems so perfect it will be a hard choice.

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/14/08 03:11 PM

To me, the HC doesn't really catch my attention. It's a smaller version of the HRLM and RMD with a rounded spine, in which case I'd rather have the HRLM and RMD. On the other hand, the MP's "coolness" factor is way up there for me; it has those sweet tan mudder res-c handles, and completely different from anything the yard has offered, except maybe the SS4. I don't know, when I saw the HC, I wasn't really impressed. The same time I was shopping in the secondary market for a SS4 or something tan, and with the MP, I get the best of both worlds. Like I said earlier, I'll probably regret not ordering HC, but it's only practical for me to choose one, and I gotta go with the MP. I can't wait for these 2 weeks to pass so I can order one already because I seriously cannot concentrate on my study!

I hope they have the HCLE at Blade too. It'd be interesting to do a side by side comparison. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I for obvious reasons ordered the HC, but I'm looking forward to the MP even more. I just love those Mudder handles! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/15/08 12:32 AM

Obviously, most of us are hoping for a good price.

But, it appears (and I am confident), that with a reasonable price, these are going to be in HIGH demand.

So, I guees we should all be hoping there are a TON of these AWESOME little knives to be made - so most everybody can get one or a few! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

I missed when the original Bog Dog was released and had to pick one off the secondary market a few years ago now.

I still have and still love that knife. I wish I had a few.

IMO, these mudder handles and stainless make a good handy knife for MANY uses.

I mentioned before, but again, for the cars, Bug-out bags, around the house, etc.

If you leave non-stainless out in your car, it will rust over time.

Also, these little mudder handled knives are super light-weight for hiking, backpacking, EDC, etc.

Honestly, I am still going to carry a folder for city EDC. But, I always prefer a fixed blade in the field, trails, etc. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

This Mud Puppy should weigh in under 5.0 ounces!
Probably close to 4.5 ounces - I would guess.

For weight comparison:

SS4........................= 5.5 ounces
Bog Dog..................= 5.0 ounces;

HRLM.......................= 9.0 ounces
Yard Keeper LE..........= 7.5 ounces
Howler (Res-C)..........= 6.0 ounces

Big choppers are very cool and all, but similar to guns, the best knives are the ones you can carry the most. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

.... Well ..... like guns.... best from one perspective anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

I like my big .45's more than any little .380 or even my compact .40's.

Similarly, some big knives are just "Awesome". But, not always ideal for carry.

These little Mud Puppy's look to fill a nice niche in my book.

Good size full grip handle for a plenty secure and comfortable user grip and handy enough sized blade for MANY tasks. Comfortable grip and GREAT blade shape all in one. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

This Mud Puppy looks Practical, handy, convenient, etc. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

To me, the HCLE and the MPLE are virtually interchangeable. I prefer the HCLE for purely aesthetic reasons. But which one I decide to buy (if either) will depend on how much the MPLE costs. If the difference in price between the HCLE and the MPLE is $20.00 or less, I'd take the HCLE. If the difference in price between them is greater than $20.00, however, I'd take the MPLE. Or to put it another way, I wouldn't be willing to pay more than a $20.00 markup for G-10 handles.

Problem is, unless the knife is a steal or has a maker's mark I want to acquire, I don't normally buy fixed blade knives with blade lengths less than 4". That's folder territory AFAIC. I already own a knife with a Swamp Rat logo and the HCLE at nearly $155.00 shipped doesn't qualify as a steal in my estimation. So under any circumstances, the HCLE is out for me. Whether the same is true of the MPLE depends on what Dan decides to sell it for. But just so I don't get accused of vacillating after Dan announces the price, I won't pay more for it than I would for a folder. And my folder spending limit is $100.00.

i agree with just about everything in this post. relative to the entire knife market, $100 shipped may be okay, but in my eyes this thing should be priced relative to busse clan knives which should take it well below that. considering the price of the swarden and greater knives from the swamp that cost less than the swarden, the mple shouldn't come near $100 shipped, i don't care if it is a tan LE.

I'll take #39 .... if we are getting our JYD #'s.

And if I can get some stuff sold in time, maybe and extra # something or other.

I kind of doubt it...... I haven't seen anything of that nature offered by Dan. I think a few of us just threw that out there for the heck of it - for fun and just in case <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" /> ......

......., but .... if offered (?????), it seem JYD's should have first dibs on their numbers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> (????) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> .

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/15/08 08:53 PM

Specs for the Busse Combat Active Duty (CG) are:
OAL: 7.88
Blade Length: 3.5
Blade Thickness: 0.15

Specs for the MPLE are:
OAL: 8 1/4"
Blade Length: 3 1/4" (3.25)
Blade Thickness: 3/16" (0.1875)

The CG AD doesn't have a full height grind, so even though the MPLE is thicker, the edge geometry should be close. The AD isn't as imposing as most Busse Combat knives, but it's perhaps their most practical overall -- the MPLE promises to match up quite well with it (except the Mudder handle should be more comfortable). I plan to buy several.

I won't be getting to Blade until Saturday morning when they open the doors so I figure I've already saved $500 since you Dawgs will have cleaned the bowl of these beauties. I'll be happy if I score one, I'll be even happier if I score five!!

I can't believe it's only been 5 days since Dan posted this. Well I guess we're almost half way.

So what kind sheaths is everyone planning to get with the MP? Kydex or leather?
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/16/08 01:48 PM

Homemade leather sheath. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: tyger75

Re: Numbers & Letters, The Next ScrapYard Offerin - 05/16/08 04:03 PM

Definitely leather. I'll probably be talking to you for it, RainWalker. I checked out you work and gotta say, I like it. I'll be talking to you in a couple of weeks about another design I have in mind for my DFLE, maybe even with an attach on assembly for an SS4 or the MPLE. I just gotta finish working it out in my head and on paper. (Sorry 'bout the off topic!LOL!)

I've always been more of a fan of leather for my knives. Guess that's just the East coast Canadian in me! LOL!

I might get a Spec-Ops Combat Master sheath. It'll work with most knives and I can wear it on the belt or attach it to my backpack. TAD gear has them for $30 (before shipping).

Some Kydex and some leather for me and... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Those Mudder handles work real well with kydex, but I gotta admit, that little Puppy would sure look good in some nice Tan leather too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

The MPLE is a great little knife. I gave mine a little TLC over the weekend with my sharpmaker, and it cuts like a laserbeam now. Good stuff.

This is my first post on the Scrapyard forum- are you dogs gonna let a Hog sniff around these parts?

I respectfully disagree, M22. The MPLEs haven't been released yet. Until they arrive in the store or Dan tells us that he's not going to sell them to us, I think this sticky should stay right where it is.

IMO, if there's a candidate for sticky removal, it's the DMDC's Second Run thread. The DMDCs have all shipped, so there's no reason to leave that thread stickied any more.

Uhoh... Not only do I agree with Bruce, but I am following his suggestions! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Enjoy
Dan

Soon, I hope.

Well, M22 and Shaolin, we're just feelin' the itch, not so much for the MPLE specifically, but anything to be released from Dan soon.

It's like Christmas as a kid, seeing all those gifts under the tree... that first moment of Ooohs and Aaaahs, and then the itch to open those presents up, but it's only the 19th! You want to see what's inside so bad, you're going nuts!

That's pretty much how I'm feeling anyways. I'm getting the "bug", just waiting to see what Dan is gonna pop on us.
