Scrap Yard Knife Company

Just got my knife

Just got my knife - 09/19/06 03:52 AM

Just got my knife, first appearance is good and i'm pleased overall. The sheath isn't what i was hoping for, maybe for a free one might be ok, but i'll just pass next time i guess. The coating is top notch and the handle fit is excellent. Only real problem i wasn't expecting was it's very dull. Not even close to being able to cut paper clean in the middle, and 3/4 of the edge i can rub my finger on with no worries of getting cut. For the price i'm not complaining, but just an fyi for scrap yard that they might want to put a little more QC on the sharpening process. I have no desire to send it back, i'll just do it myself, just wish i had an edgepro or something to speed it up.

I'm just giving some input to help things out as i realize this company is new and they will need feedback from their customers. Overall i think things are ok for just getting up and running. Smooth start so far IMO. Had one glitch during my order but patti is taking care of it, email responce time is very good.

Re: Just got my knife - 09/19/06 05:54 AM

I understand the arguement about having a blade sharp straight from the factory, but not so much the expressing it as much as I see it....what do these folks do when there knife gets dull?
You sharpen it! So when it comes not quit as sharp as you like....just do it yourself......tyuio, I'm not calling on you , but there just seems to be a bit of it!

Re: Just got my knife - 09/19/06 06:01 AM

I agree, when a knife gets dull it's best to sharpen it so it works like it was new......well works like it's supposed to i mean. If input isn't wanted here thats no prob, just need to learn the rules of this new forum.

Re: Just got my knife - 09/19/06 06:08 AM

No, nothing like that at all, in put is needed and every one of your comments is appreciated, I didn't mean to sound like an [censored], I was just making a general statement about folks talking about dull blades, I just wonder if they know HOW to sharpen it when the time comes to.

Re: Just got my knife - 09/19/06 06:19 AM

You both have good points. My scrapper is not as sharp as I would have liked, but I am sure that a couple of seconds with my steel will have it shaving hair. This does not bother me. All of my swamp rats and busse knives have been very sharp from the get-go, up to now, regardless of what steel they are made of.
I bought a buck general at cabela's this weekend. I spent around 50 bucks for it, and it came so sharp out of the box it is virtually a razor. I do understand how tyuio would expect our puppies to be equally as honed when new.

mine is pretty sharp out of the box...same than my other SR and Busse..

Right on! The only way to improve the product is to give an honest feedback. While I don't care if my scrapper comes razor sharp or not, the next guy will expect it to. Many folks are used to razor sharpness straight out of the box and in many cases are not fimiliar with sharpening technique.

Re: Just got my knife - 09/19/06 01:02 PM

I am inclined to agree with greens. If knives costing 1/2 that of Yard knives, let alone Rats and Hogs, can come shaving sharp from the factory, why can't the Dogs? I really like my Scrapper, but would have liked the edge a little sharper. Yes, I sharpened it, but feel like I should not have had to do so. Just my honest thoughts!

Re: Just got my knife - 10/01/06 12:39 AM

Sounds like I best get some fine 'wet and dry' paper and an old mouse mat in for when my S6 arrives! Personally apart from Gerber multitools I can't remember ever getting a knife that impressed me with the edge on it from the factory. Some have been truly bl**dy awful (Ontario and Camillus)!

yep, i agree -- i had to spend hours on both of mine, just because i don't have the convenience of a slack-belt grinder like they do at the shop -- but if i can put a razor edge on a knife, so can anyone, even if they are a hack. i just bought a $17 cold steel that shaved out of the box... i mean, if THEY know how to sharpen, it can't be that hard, right? I agree, we shouldn't have to spend hours on brand new $90 or $140 blades. One of mine LEs (i bought two) even had little swirly-marks on it either from an orbital sander or from being hand-worked in a circular fashion... and it was duller than the other one! I could understand a very obtuse edge if they were big choppers, but heavy edge geometry doesn't have to mean "dull" -- my HOGFSH factory edge popped hairs and left great clean bald spots on my arm -- razor sharp but over 5/16" thick with an edge to match. like you say, just my honest thoughts. In my earlier posts i tried to defend the quality of the edge, i was caught up in the excitement of a new company... but lately i'm feeling much more caring, and realize it wasn't right of me to sugar-coat my feedback if i really hope to see the quality of the products improve -- if people continue to be disappionted, they won't keep buying knives. it's that simple.

Re: Just got my knife - 10/01/06 04:38 AM

That 17 dollar cold steal will be fun to chop with a Bowie... Dogg, are you disappointed to the point where you would consider not buying another Scrapper because of the edge? And where is the Avatar......

Re: Just got my knife - 10/01/06 05:47 AM

sr77dogg - I hope that your less-than-perfect edge won't dissuade you from future Yard knives. Mine was a little duller than expected, perhaps due to a rushed production date. However, I am really looking forward to the next release - hopefully the BOWIE! At the same time, I hope that Dan and Patti have taken notice of all the comments regarding their knife edges and take measures to improve them.
As far as sugar-coating feedback - well, I think that what we may consider constructive criticism sometimes is viewed as complaining, and generates negative feelings from some folks. I think that sometimes I am a little too honest and direct for some folks' liking, but I try to tell it like I see it. I love my Scrapper and have great hopes for future products, and I will continue to tell it like I see it.

Re: Just got my knife - 10/01/06 02:19 PM

Guys if people don't say it like it is, stuff never gets fixed. I think whinging is when you just keep hammering on about the same issue and 'dis' knives or companies rather than offering good feedback. With a forum read and contributed to by the company booses, comments and complaints will make a good company great. (Just my thoughts!)

Bl**dy sharp big bad bowie!!

Thanks for your input Dan, it's great to feel valued as a customer and I'm sure the guys all second that!

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 12:24 AM

I don't think you have to asterisk out Bloody, unless I am missing something. And I second that!
Posted By: Paul the Brit'

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 12:27 AM

Thanks for the second, I'm just trying to be (a bit) polite with the asterisking!
Posted By: Gravelface

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 12:30 AM

By asterisking, It seems to draw a bit more attention to the word, where normally it would be looked over. In my opinion...I don't think anyone, even a 10 year old would get in trouble for saying bloody. Thanks for the consideration though, I just throwing out my 2 cents, by any means I am not telling you how to type.
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 12:58 AM

Paul and GF - You guys are something else! Unless I'm wrong, in Britain the term "bloody" is akin to strong cursing/swearing.

Dan - thanks for your attention to the sharpness issue. This is a prime example of constructive discussions. Now, if we can just convince you to release the BOWIE next....

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 01:02 AM

Bloody over here (no asterisks as GF doesn't) is sort of minor to middle level swearing. It's not too bad really, I just thought I'd try to avoid 'cussing' having said that I suppose 'hell yeah' may annoy some.

Your point about Dan listening to us is spot on and is good for us all, especially us BOWIE lovers!
Posted By: Gravelface

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 01:04 AM

Come on now, I just don't recognize it as swearing....
Posted By: Paul the Brit'

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 01:06 AM

Pretty low level swearing!
Posted By: Gravelface

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 01:07 AM

My wife and I get into these debates...our child is 3, and she gets onto me when I slip on my swear-o-meter, but then she plays music with our child in the car, that I consider vulgar!.....What to do....besides get a BOWIE!

I've heard that a new BOWIE is just the cure for those folks who need a large steel blade!

Dan, this is the perfect chance for you to "play Doctor" and get away with it. I'm sure that a new Yard BOWIE would be the perfect remedy for GF's ailment!

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 09:52 AM

Regarding sharpness, i think it depends on your usage as well, one person may receive it and want to push cut paper with it/prepare dinner, the next guy might want to go and beat on some 2X4s. AFAIK you should have different edge geometries for each use. From the busses and rats that i have, i kinda prefer that they have an edge that's not too sharp new, i mainly use them outdoors so i prefer a more durable edge. Just my 2 cents
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 01:50 PM

Hello Carpenoctem - Welcome to the Yard! Interesting point about the edge geometry, but I feel that a knife's main function is cutting. My Swamp Rat BattleRat is a great chopper, but it came to me ready to shave hair. THAT is the way I feel a knife edge should be! I hope the new Scrap Yard Bowie will be the same, but of course, it's different strokes for different folks!
Posted By: Paul the Brit'

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 08:19 PM

It'll be interesting to see how the edge on the bowie (when I get one now Dans done the decent thing!) matches up to my Scrapper 6 (still in the mail!) when it arrives. Edge wise I'm along the lines of PK, I like my big knives sharp (even my Tramontina Bolo is sharp and set to around 25 degrees), hair popping works for me.

Re: Just got my knife - 10/03/06 11:59 PM

Sadly not, there are very few of them left now. The last big name in British knives was 'Wilkinson Sword' and they went bump last year... Pity, their new knife (the Dartmoor CSK) was redesigned by the Royal Marine Commando survival school instructors in Devon and those hardcore BMF's know their stuff! Having said that the Dartmoor CSK is a bit heavy..

Dan and Patti read the posts and seem to be interested in what we want, what more can we ask for from a company? I'd recommend the Scrapper that's out now, it's a great allrounder, why wait for a Dan knife?

For those that aren't familiar with it, halon is heavier than air and will force out all the oxygen to starve the fire so it will go out. Which would make the crew unable to breathe and force them out.

I just got my knife (scrapper 6) that I ordered about 3 weeks ago. And again, this one is as dull as can be. I can't even cut paper with it. I can even get a firm grip on the edge with my bare hands (without cutting myself).

I know it's an old thread, but I just wanted to let everybody know. Overall the knife is awesome!

Welcome to the yard cz75! (Nice pistol too... though I'd prefer the '85). The Scrapper will sharpen up nicely EVENTUALLY, if you consider it a 'craft hobby' rather than a chore it'll even nearly be fun.. It's a great knife though!

Hey guys,

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, it's me from the swamp.......
I think the 75 is a bit better design, because of less failures of the slide catch (which occur more on the 85 model)

Anyway, I think it more then clear knives/survival etc are a hobby for me, so sharpening is almost fun to me.

I've used my Lansky set (Yes, I know... ) for 1.5hrs to reprofile it. It has worked for me in the past, so why not on the S6? I now have a Scrapper 6 that can push cut paper!
The only complaint that I really have is the sheath. It's not a waste of money, but it's getting close...... It doesn't compliment the knife very well.......

Anyway, I think I'll wait for the shorter blades (I need a Howling R type of blade). Does anybody know when they are expected?

Thanks,
CZ
