154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/07/08 01:19 PM

Got Vic's knife back. . . . Looks good! . . . It did what it was supposed to do. . . Details are forthcoming. . . For those who are freaking out. . . grab a beer, stop panicking, and get some popcorn for the show!

We are busting up some Mud Puppies this weekend to put your fears to rest.

Pics should be up by Tuesday or earlier...

I'll be drinking bourbon and beating on steel! Does it get any better than that?

Dan

I'm looking forward to more 154CM abuse (on somebody else's knives). When I get my replacement, I will refrain from such abuse on mine. In spite of my putting just too much lateral force onto such a thin point, I was very impressed the the toughness of the edge. As you can see, it is still very sharp even after splitting that oak using my baton.

I wonder if Dan and the boys are out there beating on the knives now. That is so much fun. I just wish I didn't have to buy knives to do it. BTW, I'd volunteer to test a Sarsquatch for free, if I get to keep the knife.

When battoning you actually don't stress the edge after the initial entry into the wood as clearance is then formed and the contact is on the sides of the blade !

I guess that is true in splitting. I also drove it across the grain to cut through a 1" piece of hardwood in another test that isn't in the pics. In any case, it does seem to hold an edge well.

I haven't had time to abuse mine yet, but I did spend a little time on one of my MPLE's yesterday evening on the belt grinder - reprofiling and then some time on my leather strop with compounds.

I have a pretty nice convex on it and it is getting pretty sharp..... I didn't have time to work on it till perfect...... plus, I intended to do my own testing on this MPLE. But, Dan might save me the effort.
I will still probably take it out and give it a "Fair" workout on some chores I expect it to handle. Just strapped for time right now.

You can tell from hand stropping the carbides are HARD on this blade. "Sometimes" that hardness seems to "Possibly" equate to brittleness (????). But, sometimes it tends to equate to a hard blade that holds a sharp edge for a while.
.... There are typically trade-offs and compromises in knife steels.

Field use is a MUCH better and more relevant test.... But, just noting a less than scientific observation on my strop compared to other knives I have worked on.

Can't wait to see your tests Dan.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/08/08 06:03 AM

I am interested to see the tests but really what interests me is how it does as far as edge retention much more than the lateral strength. Really how much prying do we really do with our knives? I have been carrying my SS4 for years and can't recall doing any that the Muppy could not easily handle.

I also think the Muppy is a near perfect companion blade for the DFLE. Any heavy work could be done by the DFLE and the Muppy can be perfect for the delicate jobs and the finishes even match.

Bruce - GET REAL!!! Would you expect the SS4 to perform EXACTLY the same as the DogFather?!? They are both outstanding knives, but meant for different purposes. After SO MANY Dogs were howling for a Bussekin stainless, small knife, Dan provided for us - complete with mudder handles!! I'm sure that these blades will out-perform anything similar from other companies! We should appreciate his work!!!

Jim Crowell, who collaborated with Reggie Barker on the design of the
Crowell-Barker competition knife for Browning, stopped at the ScrapYard booth. He was talking with Dan about the knives and "grilling" him, and Jim just couldn't believe that knives of this quality were actually being made here in the U.S.! He was shocked when he asked Dan "who makes these knives for you?" and Dan replied "I do"!!! Keep in mind that the Browning knives are outsourced to China! I was happy and proud to tell him that Bussekin products have a tremendously loyal following who believe in their products, as do the Busse folks with their HONEST life-time warranty! Jim seemed amazed and impressed when he left the booth!! I just felt proud to be a Dog!!!

That's right, fellow dogs! I broke the point on a Swamp Rat knife using an EDC slicer as a prybar. Dan is busy making sure his offerings are tough enough to wear the SY logo. Would other companies do this? We have been asking for mudder handles and stainless blades. Dan delivered. Yes, there are some foreign manufacturers that make some pretty tough stainless knives. If you break one abusing it, will they send you a new one like Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard do? Personally, I'm going to the store tomorrow for popcorn and beer.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/08/08 05:57 PM

Couple of things.

First, I have been called out of town and will not be able to get to the heavy beatings until later this week. . . I will update you as soon as I return.

Second, these are NOT Busse knives, they are Scrap Yard Knives. In no way does every individual knife offered from the three different "Busse Kin" lines reflect upon the other two. If so, then all knives will need to be made of INFI, in which case you can say goodbye to the Swamp and the Yard.

Third, let's try to stop all of the catty, grade school-like comments about these knives until these tests are finished. We will be destroying a number of blades to give you guys a really accurate performance envelope. We are dogs not pansies. . . let's act that way.

Fourth, I am very disappointed in a few people on this forum, there are only a few and they are certainly a very tiny minority. Armed with one man's unmeasured experience with a Swamp Rat blade, they have chosen to resort to ridiculous condemnations and accusations about the entire 154CM Scrap Yard line! Seriously? The malicious nature of these comments are unlike any I have read on these forums before and let it be known that they will no longer be tolerated. You must see the damage that you are doing not only to our reputation, but to your own as well. It is not the way of the Dog and it is done. Note how the man who actually broke the blade has been one of the most respectful on this issue.

There have been a number of Busse blades broken in the past 26 years. NEVER has a customer been left holding the bag, NEVER! Even if the knife was bought 20 years after its manufacture and purchased on the secondary market. EVERY customer with a problem has been satisfied. We carry on that great tradition at the Yard. We do it out of honor and respect for our customers and we do expect some level of respect in return.

I will be the first to condemn these blades if they do not perform to our standards. In all of the initial testing and destruction they proved themselves to be great performers. Period! We will photograph our destructive testing and leave it to you to decide if these fine blades will serve your needs or not.

We will be bending them in steel jaw vises, and literally pounding the sand out of them! Once we have finished going all Noss4 on them we will publish the data.

We do not make claims that we can not support.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/08/08 07:05 PM

I think a lot of people are over-reacting to the incident.I have constantly said that the 154cm blades will make great little edc's for using as they should be used. Yeah Vic broke one but by prying out a chunk of oak, a task I would not even try with my Bandicoot.
People are now talking about not even using them as if they are made of sugar glass !!! Let common sense prevail and use them as they should be used cutting and slicing etc. They should prove especially usefull for fishing tasks around a marine environment etc !!!!
Lets see some pics of them being used as they should be !!!!!

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/08/08 07:23 PM

Well, it's usually the people who don't actually use the knives that make such comments. This happens quite often with many knife companies. I'm sure you've seen many bashing of knife companies from people who don't actually even use their knives, let alone even own one from that company.

Those ignorant, let them be ignorant. Those that know that company and the capabilities of their knives, will still stay loyal.

Vics test didn't really show much besides that the tip was weak. Then again, knives weren't made to do such things. Knives were made to cut, cut, cut and still continue on cutting. I don't doubt that the edge retention on the 154cm knives will be fantastic. It won't be tough and malleable like SR-77, but that is the nature of 154cm. Where using two completely different steel for two completely different tasks. I'm sure we all know the original purpose of all those steels. HT might be one thing, but the composition is still a big factor. Both will excel in their own categories.

The nearest other blade dimension wise would probably be the Swamprat SwampWarden, I just wonder if anyone has subjected those to the task that Vic tried ? I know I wouldn't risk trying it with mine and yet I love that little knife and know it would not fail me while using it for it's intended purpose !!!

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 01:21 AM

If I am stuck in the bush with my bushcraft kit which usually includes a DFLE and a small knife like the Muppy. I already have a knife designed for hard use and the smaller one I need to be able to hold an edge while I do things like whittle the
trigger sticks for traps and other fine detail work. For that edge retention is much more important than a lot of lateral strength. I am sure anything with the Scrapyard name will perform just as well as any other high end knife.

Frankly BLD I don't get your obsession with knives that can be used as prybars ,why not just buy a prybar? I want a knife that is better at being a knife than other competing knives.

I like the direction the Yard is taking with more practical usable knives.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 04:24 AM

I don't know what the fuss has been with this whole thing. I respect Vic's testing of knives and his very honest approach to them. I believe Vic is knowledgeable about knives and their proper use so when he reported that he broke the blade AND gave his honest opinion on why it happened, I was satisfied.
I bought an original DM because I wanted a modestly priced (darn near stole it) blade that was nearly indistructable. The DM is just that, I got a YKCG because I wanted something more in keeping with a bushcraft type knife, which it is.
The yard then went further and made a couple of knife designs which are more "practicle" in use made from the materials that many on this site requested. I expect a high performance to price ratio from my yard knives and they do live up to it.
I for one am happy that they are moving towards a more varied line, that will include knives to fit various niches. For me it would be sad if they decided to pigeon hole themselves into simply "the indistructible knife company".

Dan has my full support on this issue and I don't see any reason to doubt either the yard or it's products

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 02:51 PM

I just wanted to through my two bits in as well, Dan's knives are of top notch quality to begin with and given his quality to price ratio is by far the best in any industry in my opinion. As Dan continues to work with different designs and steels to keep that positive edge (so to speak) to continue his products down the road, every once in awhile there may or may not be either a defect or a design flaw. I'm thinking that it may be some impurities in Horn Dogs stock he had purchased. Rest assure Dan will make good on any problems with his products and out of all knives I have bought in the past, it is the Scrap Yard knives that I have bought the most. I can vouch for these knives being tough and they have been used on the Space Shuttle, various aircrafts, in the woods and even at Disney World as well with no failure. If Dan release it, I will definitely have no problem with buying one and if there is a defect in the model Dan will make it right.
I think everybody needs to chill just a little until the problem is found.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 04:39 PM

Dan said the blade looked good. Why is it so hard to accept the simple fact that I misused the knife? It's a thin point on an EDC slicer. I put way to much force on it. I have admitted that from day one. There is nothing wrong with the knife! I wish I hadn't done that point test, but the deed is done, and Eric is sending me a new one as soon as they make some more. End of story.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 07:27 PM

I think this whole thing has been blown way out of proportion. It doesnt matter what this knife is made of it wont stand up to abuse like that and I am not saying Horn Dog abused his knife. Several posters have implied that the same knife made of INFI would have survived that test. I think not. A very similar new blade from Busse of which I have along with the new Scrapyard is the Boney Active Duty from Bussecombat. In part the website description says.
"The tips are VERY fine and are not designed for prying or heave abuse... No worries though. If you find yourself in a precarious situation and need to abuse your BAD,you are still covered by our warranty."
I think it says a lot about Dan that he is going to do whatever tests he does but in my opinion we arent owed an explanation. Just my 2 cents.

C/P - Horn Dog himself said he abused his knife, so enough said about that. The fact that Eric will be replacing it certainly says something for the Busse group!!!

I am really disappointed with a couple of our fellow Dogs - they exhibit little Faith in Dan and the Yard! I have even spoken with one before on the phone and he promised to take the "high road" and stop being so cynical. This type of posting reflects poorly on the individual as well as the Yard. I try to take the "velvet hammer" approach to handling problems, but I can and will take the "iron fist" route if necessary. Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 08:09 PM

I don't think their was anything wrong with Vic's knife either. It was simply what happens when you take a thin ,wide piece of steel hardened to over 57Rockwell and then stick it an inch into hardwood and put lateral force on it. If it did not break then their might have been something wrong with the heat treat.

I understand how you are feeling Tom. It is like some people cannot get their heads around the idea that Scrapyard might make more than one single type of product. I have a Spyderco Mule team made of 52100 that if you tried the same thing as HD did to the HC you would also break the tip off yet no one has any problems with the Mule.

I am with CoyotBC on this one and I have no problem with the knives ,so long as I actually get one this time.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/09/08 09:33 PM

Part of what Dan said makes me wonder if grouping the three companies under the "Bussekin" umbrella might cause him some grief. There are statements on both Scrap Yard's site and Swamp Rat's warning folks not to contact Busse Combat. I don't think the relationship between companies is adversarial, but there may be a strong desire to preserve differential brand identity. Am I reading too much into it, or should we perhaps limit the use of the term "Bussekin"?

As far as this particular thread goes, I plan to wait until Dan posts the test results before saying anything else about 154CM -- unless I'm going to apply controlled forces and measure deflection angles to the point of failure using my own knives (which I'm not), then speculating about what they can or can't handle isn't productive, and is obviously irritating the guy in charge.

I'll be pleased to see the tests and have confirmed my sig "In DOG we trust!". I'd take ANY of my Yard knives solo as a field knife with no hesitation and stake my life on it. I wouldn't say that about ANYONE else's!

Long live the yard!

OK,OK i know i said i wouldnt participate in any more knife tests conversations but that was technically knifetests.com so after consulting with my lawyers we have decided that it will not be a breach of contract for me to participate in this destruction of perfectly good steel...lol.

The Space Shuttle? Really? That’s a story I’d like to hear. What happened?

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/11/08 03:46 PM

Well, I had worked on the Space Shuttle for over 10 years when we were told of our demise in 2010, so I decided to leave the company for a job that is closer to the house and will be around for a while. When I was leaving they were averaging about 13 people per week quiting. Before I had left I had procured 3 knives into the shuttle endeavor (1 Dog father,1 dog mutt and one swamp rat knife)just to know in my mind I can say these were actually aboard a live shuttle and the newest and fastest one at that. The bad part about the cape was there is no photography in the bay except during open houses and if a QC had a camera. Unfortunately getting pictures was next to imposable. I was allowed to use the dog mutt for normal work around and on the exterior of the shuttle but only approved tools were allowed inside. So on a day to day routine I would cut rope and various material with it (quartz, Kevlar, kapton, lumiloy, etc.. So technically it was used ON the shuttle and has been in there once but very few knives can claim that. There were a few knives by astronauts carried on orbit but not a lot, all in all it was a good job and I hate to see the program go down like that but sometimes you have to move on. My current job is a little more secure and keeps me really busy a lot so I don't get the time I like to do things.
I try to come here as much as I can but usually don't have the time I like to post or experiment. Looking back at the days, I had wished I could have got a picture of them in the ship but the risk was not worth it. Dan and Jerrys knives has worked for me in some harsh environments working around a lot of hazards around and on (key word on) the shuttle. I'll try to dig up some open house pictures if your interested in seeing the working area.

Falcon, That must have been really great, to be able to work with the Shuttle!

Sorry to hear that you had to leave though.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/12/08 11:10 PM

Great story, Falcon. Thanks.

Of course Randal Made Knives developed the Astro for the Mercury 7. I never quite figured out why you’d need a 5 ˝” sheath knife in a space capsule. Except for “Just in case.” Or “You never can tell.” That’s also why I carry knives.

It is an environment in which, should things go bad, you might need a sharpened pry bar. If I had to pick I’d take the Dumpster Mutt rather than the Astro any day.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/13/08 12:11 AM

Thanks Jeff and Implume, It was a great ride working out there for as long as it lasted. One down side to that industry is it's always unstable out there. When the economy takes a dive, so does that place. Our company will not be the prime contractor on the next program and they weren't sure of us having a job after 2010, so instead of taking a chance on not having a job then, I decided to start looking for another job and had found one closer to home (less gas) and a little more job security (hopefully). I learned a lot while working out there and it's frustrating watching our technology go down the tubes because of politics. But what can you do. Any how, here are some pics I dug out to give you an idea of the place. (I'm the red headed fat one in the pictures) I also got to meet some stars while out there filming Armageddon, Apollo 13 and Space Cowboys. Here's a pic of John Travolta and Clint Eastwood that was shot, I was over by the eye wash station when John was checking out the nose.

WARNING PICTURES AHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes darkaether it is a lot bigger than it looks, the crew compartment and the aft has actually 3 stories and the tank is unbelievably huge.

Paul, this is true now a days, everything does go to the lowest bidder. We lost the edge after 1983 for Space, now the airforce will be the new player since they took our replacement vehicle back in the 90's the Venture star X-33.

My dad worked for Rockwell International in the late 60's and early 70's on the original Space Shuttle project. I remember he took us all out to the facility for an open house of some sort. I think it was 1975 or 1976 or thereabouts. They had a big, full-size mockup and he still tells me to this day that I looked at it, my eyes got all big, and I said "Dad... did YOU BUILD THAT????"

Of course I'm not the best Dad in the world either , we'll spend the day at the range and mountian biking and playing tennis...I'm getting too old and fat for all the phyical activity

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 06/19/08 11:45 PM

How long am I expected to leave the beer and popcorn alone! Here's a little preview of the abuse testing....the easy stuff. First, total immersion of the MPLE in 38 F beer!
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
I left it in until the head went down a little.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Then I plunged the little HCLE into hot salty, very corrosive popcorn.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
You can see the blade is still chilled.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Even under such stresses, I stuck it into an aluminum can.
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Victory is sweet!
[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
Maybe that will hold us until we get the REAL abuse tests!

I am sure that whatever it is, it is more measured and scientific that my simple tests. Probably slicing hemp rope and checking edge retention, bending them in a vise and seeing how many degrees they bend before breaking. Stuff like that.

My guess is that Dan is unable to find the breaking point for his 154CM!

I have NOT taken mine off since the day they arrived. I wear the Bird Dog in a simple Leather Howling Rat sheath..fits perfect and the Mud Puppy in my infamous
Python SS-4 sheath from The Rainwalker. Again perfect fit.

I dispatched a Watermelon the first day with my Bird...flawless victory. It was a smaller seedless kind you know the ones.

I use the Pup for spreading jam on my morning biscuits, cutting sandwiches in half, prying frozen burger patties apart, and all general cutting tasks.

That Bird is more fun still I use it twice as much for some reason. It's longer and very tip oriented so while at work cleaning I pick bugs from the baseboards around homes, cutting CLEAN strands of carpet that are ready to snag and unfurl the whole line of carpet. I use it for whacking the small branches that grow from trees around our home. You know the kind that decide to grow out of the trunk for some reason. I cut pork roasts and beef roasts with it. I cut darn near anything that get in my path with it!
The Pup I use for more Kitchen and simple cut tasks for some reason.

I know one thing for sure.

I am 100% Positive behind both blades. They are whoppers in my book.

The stainless Satin finish looks great. The logo is without flaw and both were very sharp when they arrived. After the second week I took after both of them with my Edge Select 120 and made both blades spooky sharp. They are so perfect for any task that is just short of chopping down a tree or splitting logs for a fire that I quite frankly can't dress without putting both on with great pride.

Pride because they are so perfect for me. Pride because they look so good on.
And Pride because they are Scrap Yard knives.

And proof that Dan listens to us.

[color:"yellow"]I wish and hope that when they are released to The Yard that every Dog take a hard look at their finances and strongly consider buying both. [/color]

It is a decision that I am so glad I gave little thought to before Jeff went to Blade shopping. Thanks again Jeff for these wonderful appendages.

Long post eh? Sorry but these blades get me going. They are the perfect EDC combo for me as that's why I can't shut up about them.

Peace.

PoP, That post was worth the read. I'm glad I was able to get them for you, and it sounds like your giving them a good workout. I haven't had the time to use mine that much, and it's refreshing to hear how much you like yours, and how handy they've become.

Thanks for sharing!

Have not used it yet, but my ZT0200 has the same steel, and it's great. Sharp as hell, holds an edge very well so far. Only been cutting cardboard though.

Pop you convinced me to buy a Birdy. I love my Muppy (Thanks Bananaclip) and it is especially good at opening blister packs. I had a monstercable one to open and had to carve these little rivets out and the pointyness worked amazingly well.
It also fits in most SS4 sheaths.

Two weeks is always relevant around here, RC.

When my mutt shipped, I asked Patti about the first position kydex sheath that I had ordered for it. she said "those are back-ordered, but we'll have them in about two weeks" I think/hope she meant LITERALLY two weeks, but it still made me chuckle

We are busting up some Mud Puppies this weekend to put your fears to rest.

Very disturbing to me that Dan would let this thread go so long with no test results. I find it hard to believe he couldn't find 4 hours in the last 6 weeks to beat up a mud puppy and snap a few shots.

I'm still very curious about using a 154CM blade in a "rough use" knife...

I find it rather inconsiderate to post a thread saying "by Tuesday" results will be up, and then wait 6 weeks.

We've been waiting even longer for the same thing from Eric at the Swamp. Before Blade, he said the shop was too busy to send them to him until after Blade. It sounded like the pics were already taken. Still nothing from him either.

Re: 154CM Mud Puppy Abuse Tests Are Coming. . . - 07/05/12 09:16 PM

Someone here quite some time back (Might have been Myketheknife, but I'm no sure) drove a Muppy through I THINK 1/4 inch channel iron with no damage. they also I think ground off the end of the handle (pommel) to where it left some exposed steel. The 154cm the way Dan and gang does it is some tough, abuse taking stuff.

Does anyone else remember these abuse pics/posts?

It would have been last year, or maybe even the year before.

Speaking of Myketheknife, anyone heard from or about him?
