Trust Your Knife - 07/08/08 06:33 AM

Since Pitman got us started about why we should carry a knife, this one will be directed to trusting it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

The RMD is my knife of choice. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Here's me standing on it.

So, now you owners of Busse knives know that 3/16 thickness is enough to support 155+ lbs worth of skin, meat, bone, veins, blood, camera, bags, kydex sheaths, and knives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I might consider doing something like that with a 1/2" khuk, but prolly not. I'm pretty big and I like the bottom of my feet to not have deep gashes in them.

Great photo Sharp! I think the trick is to put yur weight on really slow. I would not want to jump on it though.

Hehe, sweet! I think my DMCG would stand up (no pun intended) to the task, but I might have trouble getting it in the wood. How deep was the RMD/DMDC?

Re: Trust Your Knife - 07/08/08 09:52 AM

great pics.

i'm glad it didnt happen but imagine the look on your face if it snapped and you fell.ohh well, you would've got a new one.

i have that knife so thats good to know.i wonder if it would or will takke noss's 225 pounds.

just imagine .250-.280 SR77 or 3/8in INFI like an ASH-1.

actually i am curious how much weight a 3/8in blade of INFI like the ASH-1 or FFFBM could take laterally.

i dont think SR77 is capable of snapping.i think it would just bend after seeing those DFCG pics.

Re: Trust Your Knife - 07/08/08 10:53 AM

I had to weigh myself with full winter gear in order to set the sag and suspensions settings on my quad and i was well over 300 pounds!
I would be willing to bet my SAR5 could take it. I have heard of a mora being abl to take a 200 pound man though.

Knives like the SAR5 ,DM's and especially the YKLE can probably be hammered into concrete and used like that. Another way they can be udes is as entry tools.
You can hammer them into a doorframe and put a cheater bar on it.
Everyone probably knows the story about the guy who cut himself out of an overturned 4X4 with a camp tramp. the only problem is it is hard to make a knife like this that is a good slicer and capable of delicate work as well.

The Busse kin have come closer than most anyone. The SS4 is closer to the cutting tool side while the YKCG is closer to the entry tool. The YKCG is very ggod at cutting for an entry tool and vice versa with the SS4.The flat ground Mutts are a little tougher at the cost of some cutting ability due to the thickness of the stock but the sabre ground DMCG is a much worse cutter and an even tougher entry tool but I think it is toughness it does not need. Any broken flat grind Mutts?

Comparing the SAR5 to the YKCG is interesting.

They are very similar knives.
The same stock thickness ,blade shape and close to the same size only the SAR5 is an inch bigger
The SAR5 seems to have a nifty convex grind for maximum strength rather than the flat grind of the YKCG.

The SAR5 has a better choil and a better handle for large hands.
There is also the INFI vs S7 steels.
The YKCG seems the better slicer though.
I will probably only keep one of these 2 because I am getting a lot pickier about which knives I keep. I would love a SAR5 Comp model. The knife would be perfect with the zero edge and no coating.

Re: Trust Your Knife - 07/08/08 03:31 PM

Nice. That is why I like fixed blades. I got into an argument with a friend of my brother's not too long ago. He swears up and down that his Benchmade folder and his Sebenza can do *anything* that a fixed blade can do. So I took my Yard Guard and chopped up a 4x4, then I hammered it into a tree and stood on it. I'm still waiting for him to hammer his Sebenza into a tree and stand on it.

It won't happen, but if it does let us know.

Excellent Sharp!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

That's why I always carry a fixed blade too. Not that I go around standing on my blades, but I want to have a blade with me that I can count on completely! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I'm not sure If I would trust any folder to be able to do that, although I'm sure there's some that could, but could they do it time and time again. And, would they work right or in some cases even close afterwards if they did survive...

Re: Trust Your Knife - 07/09/08 02:01 AM

The knives were pushed in to about... an inch or and 1.5 inches of the ricasso. There was a split in the log at we fitted the knife into, so no hammering was necessary

Klink: we're pretty careful. This was a whim, and I don't plan to do it again. I recently had three stitches from my RMD, so I've become more careful since then

I weigh 300 lbs. I'm quite sure my DM could hold me. Might have to try sometime and get pics. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Re: Trust Your Knife - 07/11/08 07:42 AM

It's quite fun with a larger knife like the FFBM. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

No worries of breaking there. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
