Scrap Yard Knife Company

Well... That was fast

Well... That was fast - 09/22/06 09:14 PM

"Two weeks?" Hardly. It took me two days to get my Scrapper. I ordered it on Tuesday, and received it Thursday.

I like it. Sadly, I ordered this to inexpensively replace a bunch of spiffy Busse knives and Swamp Rat knives I need to sell to pay off my medical bills. Once I got this baby out of the box, I was relieved to see that I can still have a good knife at such an affordable price.

The Resiprene C wasn't perfectly removed around the lanyard ring, but it only took a minute with an Olfa box cutter to fix that. The edge is not as sharp as I've gotten on my other Busses and Swampies (and the edge profile is a bit unnecesarily fat for my tastes), but it isn't as dull as some posts here have lead me to expect. The sheath is both good and bad: the cordura part is improved compared to previous Busse/Swamp Rat sheaths, but the insert is too flimsy... in fact, mine came pre-cracked.

Growing pains for the new company...

Anyway, the knife is great. It achieves a magical balance of being a small knife (easy to carry, nimble in use for precision cutting), and a big knife (solid chopper, indestructible) in one. I look forward to using it.

Mike - I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your Scrapper, and such fast shipping. The Scrapper is one tough piece of steel, and I still love the Res-C handles.
We're going to need some of your excellent pictures of outdoor exploits with your knife! Tom

2 days!!! Now that is service!!! Lets see those pics!

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/22/06 11:30 PM

I don't have any pictures of it, yet. In fact, I don't have my knife nor my camera with me, right now. I'm over at a dear friend's house. She's pregnant, and has a bad cold, and her 2 year old daughter also has a bad cold, so I'm over here taking care of them. (They're napping, right now.)

Perhaps I'll get some pics of it at the vulture festival, next weekend.

I'll probably put a picture of it in the survival article I'm working on, on my website.

I went to a Goat Fest once in Texas....got to eat BBQ goat...I don't think vulture would be quite as appealing....and you are going to get sick now too...Becareful!!

I don't recommend trying to eat one. But it is the only place and time in the world where you're likely to see ~3,000 wild vultures densely packed together.

Oddly, the vulture festival isn't a popular event.

I think that, within the context of taking care of I. and K., catching this cold is essentially unavoidable. That's a small price to pay, to take care of loved ones in need.

Hopefully, my cold will be gone by the time I go to the vulture festival. If it's not... well, a cold doesn't seem like such a big deal, after my recent bout of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. For an event as major as the vulture festival, I'll put up with feeling lousy in order to get the job done.

Thanks for the concern.

Cheers,

Mike

P.S. By the way, on the sbject of being careful: I've got some good intel for photo opportunities with some sidewinders and diamondbacks on this trip, too.

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/23/06 06:33 AM

THAT WAS YOU!...I hadn't payed much attention to name, but I remember those Pictures!!!! How is all that now? I hope better. You still going to try to sell those pictures to science books?
Posted By: Evolute

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/23/06 06:46 AM

Yup, that was me, and I didn't even show the worst of the pictures. I'm mostly better. I'm still covered in pale spots, indicative of some level of cellular damage throughout my body which is at least semi-permanent. The doctors are now guessing that it will be months-to-years for the rest of the rash to fade, if ever. I'm still a bit low-energy, too.

And I'm burdened for now with big medical bills to pay off (in fact, the medical stuff isn't entirely over, yet)... which is why I'm gonna be selling off a bunch of knives.

Thanks for the concern.

Heck yes, I'm going to sell the pictures of my rash to science books! I'm going to corner the market for medical stock photos of RMSF.

Mike

P.S. We'll probably meet at Blade Show, or some such, some time. If you're interested, ask me to show you my spots.

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/23/06 06:58 AM

I don't know much about RMSF, other than it is BAD news! Be really careful when you go to the vulture fest, as they carry all kinds of parasites, etc. With your system already down, you sure don't need to pick up something from the birds! Take care!
Posted By: Evolute

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/23/06 07:03 AM

Thanks, PK.

RMSF made me very paranoid about pathogens. From now on, in such situations, I'll be wearing mosquito netting+DEET+Permethrin. I'll take care.

Good to hear Mike. While you're there, ask around for the best ways to cook snake - roasted over a fire, cut up and boiled, or whatever ? I know that they supposedly taste like chicken, but I am curious as to how the "locals" cook theirs. Thanks! Tom

You never just got to wondering and did one in yourself Tom?
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/24/06 01:36 AM

No, the one large water snake I would have tried managed to crawl into the water after I shot it with my .44 mag. Just about all the other snakes have been too small to mess with.

Mike,
I am sorry to hear of your misfortune. I hope that you make a full recovery and are able to raise the money you need cover your bills.

I've had broiled eel -- it couldn't be that different than snake, could it? by the way, ultra-yummy!

I got a rattlesnake. I grabbed him with my bare hand and cut his head off with my knife. You can read the details here: Rattlesnakes

Speaking of fast: I'm now in the early stages of coming down with a cold.

--------------------------

Rich,

Thanks for the good wishes.

-----------------------------

PK,

Marinate first, to make it tender; then roast over an open fire for flavor.

---------------------------

sr77dogg,

mmm... unagi... yum!

Andy,

Stop that before a stingray pierces your heart!

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/24/06 07:21 AM

Mike,
Glad you are feeling better bro...I remember those pics and if they werent the BAD pics then you have my respect!!

I would really like to see some of the pics you get of the diamondbacks...They are one of my fav's...I have been trying my hand at taking pics of water mocc's around here and so far I just dont "get it" on how to

1...Hold snake on hook WITHOUT it slipping off and biting me

2...Holding camera still WHILE holding the hooked snake for said photo op

Good luck with your festival and post some pics of you using your scrappy 6!!

I ran over a rattlesnake in Arkansas once....cut it's rattle off and left him there.

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/25/06 01:53 AM

Leatherface - I would be REAL careful trying to photograph close-ups of cottonmouths. Even the ole' Croc Hunter himself was leery of a water moccasin when he was filming his show about dangerous snakes. He said "I think we'll leace this one alone, cause she's real riled up". I know that they have a mean disposition.

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/25/06 06:19 AM

Well, I wasn't COMPLETELY nuts...I did have my brother pin his head to the ground with a stick before I grabbed him behind the head.
Posted By: Leatherface

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/25/06 06:20 AM

klink...thanks bro, but you need not worry...Of all the snakes that I love, cottenmouths are NOT on the list!!

I am a fairly ardent field herper and I generally give watermoccs a wide berth when I see them...They are just the most unpredictable snakes that I have ever seen!!

Granted water moccs (or any snake) dont have the capacity to be mean, but they (moccs) really dont seem to like me very much!!

One of the dudes that I know, wants some nature shots of NC's venemous snakes...I have 2 of the 3 that I was searching for...The Mocc is the last one and I cant seem to get a decent pic!!!<~~~GRRR!!

Re: Well... That was fast - 09/25/06 07:11 AM

See, ya need two people. One to hold the snake, and one to take the pic.

Re: Well... That was fast - 10/01/06 08:35 PM

I haven't checked lately, but it's certainly possible. Sad, because Andy had a lot of good and useful information, and I think he wanted the BOWIE next.
Posted By: Paul the Brit'

Re: Well... That was fast - 10/01/06 08:39 PM

You are right, Andy is a fine judge of steel so he would have wanted a large sr77 bowie to add to his collection not an INFI shorty... I'm sure he'll be back, probably just off hunting or on vacation somewhere.
Posted By: Private Klink

Re: Well... That was fast - 10/01/06 08:45 PM

I hope you're right - he is missed.
