meaning of OUR forum names.

meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/02/08 09:25 AM

yup,i unabashedly stole this idea from the busse forum but hey, this is the scrapyard forum so....what the hell do some of those crazy and impossible to pronounce forums handles mean.

of coarse i will start.

my name is NORTHERN1 and i am way more than an alcoholic,busse-holic,scrapyard-holic,swamprat-holic,edged weapon/tool-holic.............i could go on.

many people from the southern united states refer to themselves as "southerners" and since i am from one of the more northern regions of the country,up-state new york i thought i'd call my self "northerner" but someone already took that one.

so after about 3-4 attempts at other names and some monkeying around i ended up NORTHERN1,as in "the one from the north",kind of like "chosen one" except northern1.

now i wasnt thinking at the time that i was really more like a MIDDLE-1 with people like COLD ONE and UNSUB being far more north than me.but like many people have stated,"if i knew i was going to get so involved in these forums i would've thought of something else"

while i didnt give hardly any thought to my name and it has absolutely no personal meaning to me i am kind of fond of it.

so dogs,what the hell do names like UNSUB mean...{lol,i'm not picking on you}

ones like cold one and pitdog are easy.another one i've never been able to figure out is DUMPSTER DAN

Re: meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/02/08 09:53 AM

Hahah, I thought this thread looked familiar.

My handle from my favorite motorcycle forum is MRpilot, meaning I drive, "pilot", a Toyota MR2.

I can't remember which knife forum, but one of the first I tried to join, MRpilot was already taken, and I wanted to keep "MR" intact so I came up with MRpink. Mr. Pink is my favorite character from Quentin Tarantino's movie, Reservoir Dogs. Did anybody figure that??

Here's my MR2. It's a "M"id-engine, "R"ear wheel drive, "2" seater (MR2), aka "poor man's Ferrari". People always look at me weird when I put my backpack or groceries in the front hood!

Re: meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/02/08 11:46 AM

Momaw Nadon is the name of a minor character from Star Wars.

In the story he is a Ithorian high priest, exiled from his homeworld for giving the Imperials technology which they demanded. They were, at the time, pointing a couple Star Destroyer's worth of lasers at sentient groves of trees which the Ithorians revere. Everybody else was willing to sacrifice the trees, but Momaw was not. He was exiled to Tatooine, which you have to realize is even worse for a creature who came from a lush forest world since hardly anything grows on Tatooine. While there, he runs into the same Imperial commander who threatened him back home, now on his way down the command chain. The guy makes new demands (help find Obi-Wan's party in Mos Eisley), and shoots up Momaw's house to make the point. This time, Momaw shoots the guy in the back during a busy firefight with bolts flying everywhere, then takes samples of DNA from his body, with the intent of raising cloned children to not be... well, evil.

Are you sorry you asked? I picked this name the first time I ever signed up for a MUD because it's what I was reading at the time, and it's stuck with me ever since.

Goemon is a manga character of the cartoon LupinIII.
He is a samurai with a very sharp sword.
Some of my friends gave that nickname to me many years ago, since I teared a strong package into pieces with my knife in a few seconds.

I was tagged as Private Klink by my Drill Instructor, due to a vague similarity between my last name and Colonel Klink of Hogan's Heroes . The comedy was still popular back in 68', and a Marine SSGT. sure wasn't going to call me Colonel - though he DID call me lots of other names!!!

Re: meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/02/08 03:45 PM

I've always been fond of the poem by William Blake:

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

The number 75 is the year I was born. Add to it that white tigers are my fave animal. A lot of people seem to want to use tiger as an online name, I put the "Y" in there so I could get the name I want pretty much on every forum I go to.

People assume that my name is because I have a Pitbull which is not true. Maisy is actually a Staffordshire Bull/English Bull terrie cross !!!
I started off on BF as Pitman because at the time I was working at a coal mine which get called pit's in England. My computer got messed up though and I had to re-register under a different name so I just changed it to pitdog on there !!!!

Re: meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/02/08 06:36 PM

Here's the story of my name, from the last thread where this was discussed.

Quote
I always knew I'd get a chance to tell this story some day.

In 2000 I went to Tom Brown's Tracker school. I was really into Native American philosophy and The Tracker School really seamed to reinforce a lot of what I had read and learned up to that point. It may seam crazy to some but Tom's books and teachings had a very deep and lasting affect on me. Not too long after coming back from Tom's school my father became very ill and had to be hospitalized and required very serious surgery, things did not look too good. He was in intensive care and I tried to spend as much time as I could at the hospital, but I still had to work. The hospital was only about a mile away from my work so sometimes I would walk to the hospital on an extended lunch break. On one particularly nice early fall day I decided to make the walk to the hospital. I was about 1/3 to 1/2 way there when I was caught in a very unexpected and pretty intence rain shower. I was not prepaired having only warn a light wind breaker. But instead of finding cover, I was stuck with the most profound feeling of what I can only explain as an almost spiritual feeling. That may seam goofy but we've all had experiences like this at one time or another. So instead of getting wet I felt the rain on a much deeper level and began to laugh uncontrolably it must have looked quite strange to the people and cars that I passed. I made it to the hospital completely drenched but with the most profound feeling of comfort. At that point I knew my dad would be OK and that no matter what happened everthing would always find a way of working out. That walk had the most profound effect on me that has lasted to this very day i will never be the same. It's funny too because my father had always had a say that I grew up hearing, "some people just don't have since enough to get in out of the rain". From that day forward I had a new saying, "some people feel the rain, others just get wet". Now I find myself from time to time drawn to a good rain shower. There's just nothing like getting out and playing in the rain.

So anyway, shortly after that experience I needed a screen name for something and the answer was clear as a bell to me. You might even say the name picked me instead of me picking the name.

You might even say that "Rainwalker" has become my given name. It's not what my wife and kids call me but it's become a very close second to my birth name.

Sorry if this story seams too goofy or too sappy, I've alway wanted the opportunity to tell it though and I hope it has given some food for thought. Sometimes the most profound things can happen in the most mundane circumstances, sometimes they're obvious sometime their not.

So that's the story of my name hope you enjoyed it...

If that's the case, you might wanna give those people a map and a thermometer! LOL! Just tell them to travel north until the temperature drops at least 20 degrees Celsius, then they'll know they're heading in the right direction! LOL!

I searched for the original What Does Your Forum Name Mean? thread. Why type out the same thing twice, thought I? No luck, I couldn't find it.

Can anybody find that thread and post a link?

Thanks.

How did you come up with your Screen name ?

Thanks, Andy.

Taken from the original thread from last year.
Only difference I am now 43 and married for 20 years

I knew my wife's family since I was in grade 3, one of her brothers and I went to school together.
When we started going out one of her natural brothers and one of her foster brothers were my best friends (I was 18 at the time)
Her dad was a big old ex-cowboy who when he found out we were going out said.
"All these years I've been baring the front door against those wolves and you sneak in the back door with the yard dogs like a dirty coyote" of course he pronounced it Ki-yote.
For many of my close friends it is the name they know my by.
On some forums I am known as coyote but most of the forums I joined in the last two years it is coyotebc, because many of them already had a coyote on there so I added BC because I live in British Columbia (BC)

By the way just turned 42 last month and the wife and I have been married for over 19 years

Re: meaning of OUR forum names. - 09/05/08 08:55 AM

There's not much hot news from Classical Greek Philosophy. My story is basically the same:

My name originates in a philosopher joke. That sounds like a contradiction in terms. Philosophers are not known for a lively sense of humor.

It happened this way. One day in the agora, Plato was discussing the whichness of why with his disciples. Somebody asked, “What is a man?” Plato replied “Man is a featherless biped.” That sounds silly, but it’s not the joke.

The joker was Diogenes. Personally I wouldn’t look to Diogenes for a sense of humor. He was a sour and embittered sort, even for a philosopher. But he was the original Cynic, so what can you expect? Nevertheless, the man was guilty of two philosopher jokes. One was wandering through Athens carrying a lit lamp in broad daylight. When asked why, Diogenes replied, “I’m looking for an honest man.” He never found one.

Then Plato defined man, and was much praised for his acumen. Diogenes heard the story and was unimpressed. The next day Diogenes brought a living plucked [censored] to the Academy. Diogenes threw the naked—and thoroughly irritated—bird in front of Plato and asked "Is this a man, then?"

Now you know why professors of philosophy don't make good stand-up comics. Plato amended his definition to “Man is a featherless biped with broad nails.”

If you tell this story in Latin, "featherless biped" is animal bipes implume.

reconseed.

A song by a band from new york city called "Recon Seed." I liked the song and when registering on here, I was listening to it. Not to mention that it has a tactical hint to it, 'recon.' I am soon to be on a career as an Army Officer and will be doing "recon" daily as a part of the Troop Leadership Procedures (TLP), so I thought it fit.

Good thread northern1.

I'm a blues fan and there is a guy named Jonny Lang who did 'Rackemup' on his first album. Great swingin' blues song. I also throw a stick (McDermott cue) around a little bit...

Well, I havn't been around here in a great while until very recently...but have started to find a little more time to surf the net lately. I saw this thread and thought that I would join in

I was stationed at FOB Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq from FEB. 04 until MAR. 05

I always did like that name..."Speicher" and I am proud to have served my country, both on and off the battle field. I was an 88M (transportation)we drove the M931's, M818's, 2 1/2 ton's etc... and pretty much hauled JP8 (jet fuel)in the 18ft. 5K tankers.
