how many "ping" their blades??

how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/10/08 11:48 AM

maybe i'm just nuts,idk.

i cant put it into words but i feel like i get a better feel or understanding of a steel when i "ping" the blade with my finger tips or much more so when i take two blades of the same steel and lightly "clank" them together.

example............

when i take two swamprats with their 52100 and "clank" them together i get a somewhat high pitched "clink"

when i take two scrapyards with their S7 steel and "clank" them together i get a hollow "thud"

not than one is better or more desirable than the other.

i cant put into words either what i learn from doing it but i do it with every steel i have.i'm bumping 1095's into each other and 5160's into each other and so on and so on.

dont knock it until you try it.take two scrapers and just lightly clang the blades into each other and then do the same thing with two swamprats.it wont prove anything and its not scientific either.i just wanted to expose you to my madness thats all.

someone mentioned how an older busse had a different ping than the others and i felt like i knew what he meant and though i would share and see if i am all alone on this one.

its o.k. i can handle it

Do you do that before buying a knive of do you buy two knifes for each new model of your collection?

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/10/08 01:12 PM

i buy busse kin knives so theirs no way to do it ahead of time.its not something i take seriously or put any real value or meaning behind either.its just something i've noticed.

it sounds like some are denser than others.what does that mean??...idk.

just another quirky habit from a habitual knife freak while drinking and post slinging as the sun rises.

swamprats....ping

scrapyards....thud

INFI....sounds of the piano blended with the gentle sounds of a violin.seriously thats what i hear.

I never thought about this behavior...whenever I have a new blade I like to tap the blade with finger nail. I did this only to hear how it sounds.

I've noted that my DFCG makes a very pleasant chime if I support it by one finger at the center of mass and rap it with a knuckle...

So we should try to make some steel music to accompanies the voice of Dumpster Diva.

A man who's still drinking as the sun rises, now that's dedication right there!

I think that the difference is due to the handle material.

The softer the handle, the more the sound will be like a thud.
The harder the handle, the more the sound will be like a ping.

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/10/08 10:07 PM

I TOTALLY DO THE EXACT SAME THING!

When I worked at the surplus traping supplies store I sold a whole bunch of the much more expensive but way better Oxhead/Iltis axes by "pinging" them and they made the best ring I have ever heard a steel make. It was like the mating call to a deer the way guys would hear that ping and out came the plastic. That is a first rate heat treat and probably like Goemon said the wood handle but the cheap chinese ones with the fibreglass handles made a soft clank and the guy had to be really really cheap not to spend the cash on the good ones.

The A2 on my SBT makes a bit nicer of a sound than the 154 HCLE which is also quite nice though.

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/10/08 10:56 PM

LOL! I thought I was the only one. My best ringing is the Spetznatz shovel when struck by the knob of my walking stick. Rings like a bell! I love the singing sound of a good machete slashing through the brush and the thud of a well stuck hawk, too. My gosh, who would have thought steel could be so musical?

Good Lord, y'all have me beatin' all my knives together like some kind of madman now. I feel like an idiot, but the alarming thing is that I don't care !!!

LOL !!! It is like one big "group therapy" session is needed....everyone "banging" their blades together....

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/11/08 12:48 AM

The local trappers all do that ,they figure a good ring means a good heat treat.

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/11/08 02:32 AM

I've been ringing blades for years. I've heard the same thing about the heat treat, which is what made me start doing it in the first place. I've never learned anything from it, other than every blade makes its own sound.

My railroad spike knife rings like there's no tomorrow!

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/11/08 03:21 AM

I have to agree,I always 'ping'the blade. It seems like INFI makes an almost brittle sound like it would snap at the slightest bend,of course we all know better. But each blade does have it's own sound.I was reading a Lone Wolf and Cub comic(I know it's a comic book but bear with me)Anyway the main character Ogami Broke an enemies sword with his own Katana,he knew it would break because of the ring of the steel when they locked blades, this resulted in the enemies death.I know this is just fiction but anyone familiar with this series knows the amount of great historical detail that goes into them.No magical swords or half cat people, just very realisitic representation of the time period.Anyway I always think of that issue whenever I hear the different sounds of blade steel 'pinging'

I have to agree... You're crazy

Re: how many "ping" their blades?? - 09/11/08 04:00 AM

I do not think you are crazy.

Now the guy who told me could smell the difference in steels by taking a wiff...well that seemed strange but the guy who told me that he could tell the quality of the steel by how his own blood would cling to the point of a knife...now that was nuts. He wanted to stab his own hand before he would buy a knife,,,,yep that was crazy. To each his own!

Wow doing the rounds of the knife and gun shows over the years must have exposed you to some interesting people Dan.

I love lone Wolf and Cub. Another great historically accurate Comic I like is called "Crecy" about the battle between the french and English at Agincourt where the lower class English longbowmen slaughtered 10 times their number of super rich French knights.

I don't think I'd sell to a guy like that!!I guess maybe we just like to hear the ring of steel. One thing is for sure each steel has it's own unique sound.

Yeah I have them, a little more far fetched than the comics but cool though and with good sword technique. Also there are like over 100 comics in the series.Sorry to get off topic.
