thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 04:41 AM

what do you guys think of the new knife jerry put pics of up??its on page 10 of the "BOSS HG55...Yowza" thread

it really does look quite jeremy horton-ish.

he hasnt put up a complete shot where you can see the whole blade but you can see a lot of the blade and the handle so its to early for me to form an opinion.

i got mixed feelings on the vertical scallops/grooves on the blade.i dont know what their intended purpose is,not that they dont have one.i just dont know what it is yet.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 05:37 AM

It seems a bit gimmicky to me, but I'm sure some didn't like the fullers on the FBM either. Busses are known for ground breaking style as much as the performance of the steel. I'll reserve judgement for now. I love the Busses I have now, 2 Squatches, 2 steel hearts, and 2 mistresses. Their smaller knives just don't do it for me as much. Sold a BATAC and traded off a Meaner. I didn't like the Sus Scrofa much either. But the NMFBM and the new NMSFNO..

The screews in the middle just scream breaking point, this is not very reliable when fighting the 1st Klingon infantry, I would suggest a Dork Ops as a back up.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 07:29 AM

It's Klingon special ops I'm talking about. It's meant to break and dislodge in the would be assailant, then you cloak into the distance...

I will pass. i like the way Dan sticks with his bread and butter for the most part and makes strong knives like the S6 and the SOD and the DM and the DF. ahhhh long live scrap yard knives!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Andy nailed it here! It should be funny to see the Hogs charge the trough, and then rush to be the first to list them on eBay. This knife just doesn't appeal to me, so I will pass on it. I don't hate it by any means, not what I've seen so far anyway. Just not my style.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 06:56 PM

I am surprised Jerry didn't put a hollow handle on it..... LOL not what I was hoping for but on the same token, I can save alittle money now.
Posted By: Jim

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 07:36 PM

I'll have to see the whole thing (and, of course, the price), but so far this design has that "Shiva Rex" sort of feel to it -- too over the top for me. The mini-Sus Scrofa was ugly, but quite practical for some tasks; this BOSS HG55, I'm not so sure about.

He touted this as being something of the Old School Series so I was expecting a more traditional old style Busse, not something from a science fiction survival movie.... but I will wait to see the entire thing before passing judgement, might turn out okay, either that or this could be a big joke Jerry is playing on us.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/03/09 10:58 PM

I was following the post on this release regularly....excited we might get a "thick" RMD in Infi...something from the old school...when the pic came out I was struggling to find some positive thoughts...I could'nt get over the edge and the "Bread Knife" analogy. Jeremy Horton said something interesting for me...that this type of edge could be done on a CNC Ball Grinder and save labour costs on the "edge" grind...which probably explains the "new take" on the edge..."cost cutting"...well that is hardly "old school series" for me....I just hope the Khukri comes out a hell of a lot better...

The milling on the thumb grip does look like Jeremy's style but I actually prefer his work...although I bet Jeremy feels a bit flattered at the similarity of some of the features. I just got a knife from Jeremy which I am doing some testing on and whilst it looks "busy" the features on it "work"...it actually reminds me of more of Jerry's old custom work than Jerry's new release.

Here is a rare "one off" Busse old custom job...

[Linked Image from i343.photobucket.com]

and here is the knife I have from Jeremy...

[Linked Image from i343.photobucket.com]

The teeth on Jeremy's knife are "razor" sharp and cut deep grooves for traps and the front "wire cutting" grooves are just as sharp and for once "work"...

I had a Lile Knife...yes a "First Blood"...and these were no where near as effective...ditto I expect on the Tom Brown trapper...where as JH's knife has had a lot of "ceramic rod" hand sharpenning...it is up there with my FSH's as a good choice for what I need and saves me carrying some other bits and pieces of equipment.

Hmm, not liking all the over ornate channels on the blade. Someone say bread knife? Yep got one just like it. The thumb groove section looks like it would chew up your hand during chopping.. IMHO it looks like a cheap Chinese sci-fi POS knife. (Sorry!)

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/04/09 01:13 AM

Excuse my ignorance folks - but I have a question. What exactly is this blade designed for ? Or the other pictured above. If it is a comabt type of blade- maybe one of the guys on here that is familiar with this can enlighten please. I have been doing extesive study on some Applegate types of fighting knives I just landed- but this does not seem to fit that protocol. Am I missing something ? Maybe just a wall hanger ? Why have great steel if that is the case ? Lil help on this Dawgs-( or Hogs) Thanks

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/04/09 01:25 AM

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/04/09 03:23 AM

i just hope jerry has a good explanation for those vertical grooves on the blade and that they arent there just to look cool especially since a lot of people dont think they look cool and plus i find that a bit cheezy.

from how jerry explained the tip and pictures of the original HG55 it looks to me like a fighter before all the added gizmos to it.i have no need for a fighter.

i wonder if jerry wasnt sure how we would react tto it so he only showed us part of it,the most extreme part.

he's shown knives before and then released something else like the bussmuk.

this thing is up their with the shiva rex and nuclear edc.at least jerry had an explanation for the appearance of the shive rex.time will tell on this one

I didn't care for it too much, maybe when he shows the rest of the knife it might look better to me.

The LE looks great. The CG, however, may turn out to be the first BCF (Busse Cheese Fighter).

[Linked Image from i123.photobucket.com]

My wife looked at it and called it The Cheddarator! (It's humor like that that's kept our marriage going for 33 years! )

(Cheddarator) Tell your wife good one mate! That thing with black G10 could look ok.. (In a sci-fi ninja kind of way) Hmm!

jerry must have been tanked when he designed this knife. its ugly as hell IMO.

i WONT be buying one!

You know, the more I look at that picture, the more I'm beginning to like it.
I'm looking forward to seeing what the Swamp comes out with next week.
Will probably only be able to afford one, so it's going to be interesting

Same here. That Busse in satin LE finish will be at least $500. The Swamp Rat will likely be half as much in the LE finish.

Looks like Vic was right about the Swamp's offering!

For what it is, the 119 is a great knife . . . especially for the money! And it's still made in the good ol' US of A. Is it a Busse? No way in hell.
Good point!Though I grew up using pre-Taiwan Schrades I have always liked Buck knives, especially that 119,didn't mean to offend.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/16/09 04:21 PM

The new Busse looks cool and everything, but
I dont see any practical use for it.
Blade width seems too narrow for any kind of
camping/survival knife or general use knife.
Maybe for kitchen duty (if you have to kill your own game)
Its a fighter, and that style knife,im my opinion, doesnt lend itself
well as a "general use" knife.
Since I dont plan on getting into any knife fights
in the near future,I think I will pass.
It is an excellent looking knife though.
A deadly fighter... Probably kill you deader than the Buck 119.

The new Busse LE is flat out beautiful. It is for collectors for sure. If I could swing it, I'd buy one and just look at it.

It would look better with single color scales IMO. Nice gun though.

Something for the collectionistas.

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/16/09 07:25 PM

I agree with Bruce on this one, the CG vs LE arguement can go either way but it makes no sense to get a fighter like this coated, unfortunately I can't afford the price difference and as beautiful as that blade is I would never use it and right now my purchase are more directed at blades I can use. I don't need any more safe queens

Re: thoughts on new busse knife - 02/16/09 07:47 PM

Jerry's entitled to offer an art/fantasy knife once in awhile. Why should Gil Hibben have all the fun? And it does look cool!

Many folks didn't initially warm up to the CBT technology but later accepted it once they saw that the CBT didn't negatively impact the knife performance.

Who knows, "chedderations" may be the big follow-on to CBT?

I have plenty of room in my sock drawer.

CBT doesn't really appeal to me, but it didn't stop me from buying a Jackhammer last year. I really like the blade shape and feel of it in the hand.

I've actually got a Groove and it's kind of . . . well . . . groovy! Besides that, my wife gave it to me as a gift so I'm not about to part with it. But I agree with you, Tom. I generally don't like lumps, bumps, striations, grooves, scallops, etching and the like on my knife blades. The simpler and cleaner, the better.

+1. And we all know the cleanest, simplest, least lumpy bumpy knife in the world is the S6!
