CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/19/09 05:02 PM

Jerry has posted the prices for tomorrow nights CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Good luck all who will be trying for one of the offerings. I'll be sitting this one out. As much as I'd like to have an AK47, they are out of my budget this go round Maybe next time

There are some super nice knives there, but they are a little too expensive for me. I really like the satin ak-47 with the G10 handle.

Re: CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/19/09 06:34 PM

They are some nice collector-type knives. If the bolo was longer, I would try for one, but from what I can tell the Marco Bolos are about the size of the Sarsquatch, certainly no match for my FBM. The others either don't interest me or are priced higher than I am willing to pay. Besides, I have the SMLE & M9LE on order.

+1! If I say most of those are fugly and silly it will sound like sour grapes! Collectors stuff for HOGS with money to burn. Now if there'd been a .25" thick Sarsquatch in there...

I do like the HG55, but not buying one like it, even if it was a standard offering so I could..

Re: CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/19/09 10:24 PM

Only the AKs appeal to me, but in these uncertain economic times, recognizing that I could more than pay my house, utility, and grocery bills for a month for the price of one blade is certainly reason to pause. I suppose that no times are really certain; the unexpected could happen at any moment, but the current situation is more obviously uncertain than normal.

I'm not going to take part in this one. I've already got the M9 LE on order, and plan on buying 2 CGs when they come out. A couple of those knives are really nice, and would make me very happy to own... but I just have to watch my money right now and stick to my plan.

Hmmm...some goats or sheep might be cheaper than a mower. And you don't have to put gas in them. They're quiet & better for the environment...yeah, that's it. Also, they produce offspring and wool/meat, so they could actually add to your income. More money to buy knives with! Yay!

Re: CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/21/09 05:42 PM

Here's what I posted on BladeForums:

Quote
I really liked both of the AKs, but I sat this 'ganza out. I'm local for Knob Creek, which is only a month and a half away, but if I don't build up savings a bit, there will be little point in going. Even so, I suppose that I could have stretched for a 6F, but there's been a lot of talk about budget shortfalls at work (I work at an NPO -- between endowments taking big hits in the market and declining donations... well, there's been a lot of anxiety). I'd feel really stupid if I dropped that much on a blade and got RIFed soon afterward, although I'm fairly confident about my position because I support several systems that I designed and only I'm familiar with. However, most of the folks who I've seen catch the ax where I work never saw it coming, so I'm also feeling a bit cautious.
It makes for a strange dynamic; I'll probably always feel like I should have gone for one of those AKs, unless I get laid-off, in which case I'll know that I did the right thing.

Re: CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/21/09 05:51 PM

Ganzaaaz are fun. I got my Sarsquatch CE that way. But with two very desirable models available for sale now, I finally broke down and ordered a NMSFNO with sage blade and black micarta grips. I passed on the NMFBM. How many Busse choppers can a Horn Dog resist?

Vic,

IMO, your money was better spent on the NMSFNO instead of the Ganzaaa. Even with my "wrecked" and hanging by a thread finances, I did pick up the NMSFNO a couple of months ago .... But, I LOVE it!

I like some of the Ganzaaaas - especially when you can pick up a great knife design at a semi-normal Busse-ish price. I recently scored a Full Flat FSH at one of the most recent Ganzaaaas (... and a NMFBM ) - see more below. But, the "Custom" Ganzaaa prices are just WAY high and I honestly don't care for many of the options.

I have always wanted an AK, but I couldn't justify CG $597 when I had better and more stable income AND less debt. Although I would prefer a satin AK if I could, I would have to call myself all kinds of stupid to pay $1000 at this time (most likely "ANY" time! )

Anyway, I am confident you will like the NMSFNO. I can't say the NMSFNO strikes me as the "Best" at any one thing. In some ways it is a great all-rounder and in other ways it is a quirky niche - not quite the greatest chopper (compared to the BR, DFLE, FSH, and similar dedicated choppers) and a little big for general task use compared to a CT, SARSquatch and similar. But, it still is a well balanced knife with a lot of good characteristics. It still should be a "Good" chopper. In all fairness the NMSFNO is actually a bit of a "Niche" size. Busse just hasn't made many knives with this blade size. I measure the blade on my NMSFNO at 8.1875". The only other common Busse and kin blade in this size range is the FSH (The Mofo's, Uncle Mofo's and their variants are at about 8.5", but I don't have any of those )
The current Swamp Rat M9LE will be another somewhat unique "niche" length as not many blades are close to 9.0" either.

I think the NMSFNO and M9LE would likely balance as "Good" choppers, "decent" general use and both probably excellent as large fighting Bowies.

Yard Guard..............= 7.25” blade; 12.4” oal; 0.270" thick (Stripped and satin finished); 16.0 ounces
Camp Tramp............= 7.325" blade; 12.5” oal; 0.236" thick (stripped); 14.5 ounces
Chopweiler - Micarta = 7.5625” blade; 13.1875” oal; 0.239” thick (with coating); 19.1 ounces
Ratweiler (orig.)……. = 7.5” blade; 13” oal; .25” thick; 20.1 ounces;
SARSquatch…………… = 7.0” blade; 12.75” oal; .1875” thick; 17.0 ounces
SFNO-LE………………….= 7.0” blade, 12.75” oal; .22” thick; 18.5 ounces

---------
NMSFNO………………….= 8.1875” blade; 14.0” oal; .25” thick; 21.5 ounces

FSH (full flat grind)..= 8.1875” blade; 14.4” oal; .27” thick; 22.0 ounces;
---------

Battle Rat……………. = 9.375” blade; 14.4375” oal; 16.5 ounces
Rat Mastiff………….. = 9.5” blade; 15.25” oal; .25” thick; 21.7 ounces
Dog Father LE…….. = 10.0625” blade; 15.125” oal; .250” thick; 17.0 ounces

NMFBM………………… = 11.375” blade; 17.5” oal; 0.243” thick; 29.5 ounces (some weigh more ?)

To me, the simple Res-C Choppers are still just pretty darn hard to beat for chopping comfort and agility - BR and DFLE. But, they are both longer than the NMSFNO and should have some advantages in regards to chopping over the NMSFNO.

However, the one knife I recently "Re"-acquired that is really climbing high on my list for it's size catagory is my recent Ganzaaa Full-height flat FSH.

I used to own a HH that I unfortunately had to sell due to finances. I never got to use it. But, the HH was a beast. Thick, heavy and impressive. However, I do remember thinking it might be heavier than I would really want a knife it's size to be. I often compared it to my much lighter and more agile BR that I had at that time (and still my primary chopper - although the DFLE has some fair advantages and compromises = close call / toss up).

Anyway, while the NMSFNO is a VERY impressive knife IMO, I am REALLY loving this full-hiehg flat grind FSH. It "WILL" be a user in my line-up for sure. I will strip the "Bama Clay" coating some day and put it into my rotation for sure.

Some comparison pron:

Re: CupidGanzaaaaaaaaaaa - 02/22/09 11:50 PM

I got one of those Bama Clay FSH w/ tan micarta (VetDayGanzaaa #13C) and a pair of the Arctic White FSH w/ black hand shaped G-10 (VetDayGanzaaa #13B). Both of those models are GREAT!! Why do you want to strip it? I'd at least wait until you put enough wear on the coating that it's starting to come off anyway.

I sort of wish I'd been able to grab one or two 3B2s, but three FSH was a lot to buy all at once. I've seen 3B2s go for quite a premium in the secondary market, but I can't recall seeing any of the overrun FSH up for sale.
