Just got my Scrappers- got one of each 'cuz I'm tired of "wanting" and at these prices, I can have! Thanks ScrapYard.
What I'm wondering (and I wondered this about Busses too) is this: This steel is known for it's toughness, right? So why are the blades even thicker than Busses and Swamp Rats? Shouldn't that allow for a thinner blade?
Don't get me wrong, I love the feel of these knives and they have much better balance than my M6 which I feel has too much handle for the blade (Sorry SR!).
Also, there is a bit of difference in the handles (the LE handle is a bit smaller)- is this just normal production tolerance or is there supposed to be a difference?
Thanks for more great knives!

Welcome MVF....great questions....as we seem to have some top experts in our midst, I am sure they can answer your questions! I just really like thick blades, so I don't ask why and just keep asking for more!!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 09/29/06 06:04 AM
My Howling Fat is 1/4 and it's an EDC....thick knives slice too.....sounds kinds like fat girls need lovin too.......
I figure on a partial tang knife thick steel stock is very helpful for strength, with the deep grind on these I figure the weight is kept down and the chopping potential kept up. Thin blades are great for knives your not going to try to use brute force with but for a chopper weight up front always works for me!

With the spine over 1/4" thick, you have a lot of prying power yet retain cutting efficiency with a full flat grind. I like them thick like that, it allows me to baton on the spine without the wood breaking in half so easily. While the scrapper will be outchopped by a camp tramp or ratweiler, it does well for a 6" blade.

Drool! Scrapper 9 now please Dan!
Have I mentioned that I think the BOWIE should be next ?
I think you may have but something that important stands saying a few times! BOWIE BOWIE BOWIE! (or a Scrapper 9)

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/01/06 04:54 AM
Or a Scrapper 10.5......whichever you choose!
Paul, GF, and all the others desiring BOWIES, great minds think alike! The next release should be the BOWIE !!!!!!!
It seems that all the hardcore dogs (and me, a lowly mutt) are baying for biggies! Nice big bowie please Dan!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/01/06 02:43 PM
Yeah...what they said, and in the motto of this thread...Thick bowies!
Jim Bowie, the patron saint of knifedom, would vote for the BOWIE !!! (yes, I know I said it before)
Personally, I think the BOWIE should be the next release!
Hmm anyone mention the bowie?
You know Paul, I believe someone did mention the BOWIE. But just to be sure, I think the BOWIE should be the next model released!

Does anyone else want the BOWIE to be the next Dog released?

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/02/06 02:42 AM
yep.. I want the BOWIE, and I would like to see it 5/16" thick.
TBAUGH7 - What a GREAT idea - the BOWIE should be the next model released! Great minds think alike!!!
I want to see a pic of this bowie, or is it just the Scrapper 9?
Sounds like it should be an improved version of the RatDaddy on steroids!
Just cause we campaigned for it, sadly doesn't mean we know what it's like... I don't think it's a Scrapper 9 style as it's .25" not .275" thick. But a picture would be a great idea when Dan's got one to show us!
Excellent idea Paul! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
Yep, much better to drool over stuff you have pictures of on the internet... Hogs confounded, we won! BOWIE!

Well you can't be on the top of your game 24/7!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/04/06 12:10 AM
But not hearing about the Bowie for a full 18 hours until after the news was released!!! Wow, I fell behind the curve on that one!
Yep, but we'll let you off this time. You may have consider resigning from the BCCA though!

Yay! X-mas bowies for everyone!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/04/06 12:15 AM
Thats a stiff punishment! How about as penance I order several.....
Ok as a follow founder member I vote to keep you in provided you order at least two bowies, now you just need Dan and PK's ok! BOWIE!

yep.. I want the BOWIE, and I would like to see it 5/16" thick.
I was kinda hoping for 3/8", but 5/16 will do just fine!
GF - I agree, my EDC is 1/4" too (i wish it was a Howling Fat) and it cuts beautifully! and my HOGFSH is a heck of a slicer. Seems like there's this intuitive feeling that thick blades are less efficient slicers... maybe if you are cutting carrots, or raw potatos..

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/04/06 12:22 AM
Oh....I want a HOGFSH! That might be a mission if I land a new job! With current funding, I would find it difficult to appropriate the finacial backing of an endevor of that magnitude.....But that Howling Fat is fantastic.
You guys are cracking me up!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/04/06 05:48 AM
Wouldn't be the Scrap Yard without some good laughs!
Paul, it sounds OK to me, as long as GF orders two or more. Besides, if he gets paid for a job he did, he said he would send me one! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> But I guess the bottom line is that he has to order at least two Bowies. Tom <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Good luck with prising your freebie out of GF dude! I think as we made so much noise about them, Dan will skin us if we don't order lots of nice big bowies!
Then we had BEST get the word out! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> I would love to see the Bowie be as successful, or even better than the excellent BattleRat. It would really put Scrap Yard on the map, in a BIG way! Hopefully, all of our Brother Dogs who wanted the Infi-Mudder will get the Bowie, then order their Mudder - I know that I will. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
The only thing better than a good big knife is a good big 'un partnered up with a good little 'un! Dan gets my bowie order the moment it's posted as available and my INFI shorty order will be a fast one likewise!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/05/06 11:28 PM
Oh, I think all of them will be ordered with the swiftness! I just saw a 5/16 thick RD9.......flippin awesome!
Flippin awesome? I must be rubbing off on you mate!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/05/06 11:39 PM
When I use a sentence with "mate" and Keeley isn't in the spoken of, then you will have definitly rubbed off on me!
Just as long as he doesn't "rub off" on you the same way Keeley would! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Scary for who?!
Yep ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
All concerned and any innocent bystanders!!!
I'm beginning to think that you are part of the British Diplomatic Corps ! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
My silenced P99 is well hidden for diplomatic duties...
That clinches it Paul! You should be the next James Bond!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
The names 'Bond', 'Premium Bond'... (type of UK government saving/investment scheme) sadly not licensed to kill..

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/09/06 03:24 PM
So would he be Paul Bond, or James the Brit?

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/09/06 04:59 PM
thin is not good for a heavy duty use knife; if you want a thin blade, carry two knives.
I'll have to stick with Paul the Brit' to avoid confusion but I could sure find a use for a loaded P99 and a licence to kill!
Couldn't you be satisfied with a permit to chase wild sexy women ? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
You know I would be satisfied with that permit, provided the wife couldn't get a 'licence to kill'!!

Um hehe sorry i know i'm a day late and a dollar short here, but isn't Solstice's new RD9 tha shizzle? Oh my goodness -- The second Justin sets up shop up north i'm getting one (not exactly the same, that would be plagiarism or uh something). Holy crap! ok i just had to get that off my chest... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/footinmouth.gif" alt="" />

That's exactly what i like to do. I like thin knives (no, really!) they just have a limit to how hard they can be used. I prefer knives without such a limit..... oooooooh yeeeeah... like 5/16" SR77 bowies.....come get some.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/loopy.gif" alt="" />
5/16 sr77 bowies would be VERY nice, so would INFI S9s! Dog knives are 'the mutts nuts' (that's the politer version!) as we say over here of such great kit!

Re: ? @ Thickness - 10/11/06 12:58 AM
see, now i'm scared to say stuff like, "wow, a 5/16" SR-77 bowie would give me a rocket..." What? I was just quoting...

Who?
Check out Smoky Mountain Knife Works for Chefs' knives.
I quite like my Sabatiers... (NOT made in France!!) Full tang and nice and sharp...
French food; English, American, Germanic or Scandinavian steel!
That's better! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Perhaps YOU should replace Tony Blair !!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />
Now there's a thought... GF for president?
Good idea Paul - GF could veto any future anti-knife laws! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> Of course, he might be a little hard on his fellow Louisianans. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Since this thread is "thickness" does it really have to apply to only knives? Because I have found massive amount of thick brittish models that I would give my left Scrapper for! Paul...I now know what make living their worth it!!! My word...they just spring forth from the ground there...I am envious!
You should see our nightclubs around 1am in the morning... Woohoo!... Cough, 'course I'm FAR too old these days!
You should see our nightclubs around 1am in the morning... Woohoo!... Cough, 'course I'm FAR too old these days!

No, you just need better glasses and heart attack pills ready!
If the "subjects" mentioned are THAT good, you shouldn't need glasses!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
