Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009

Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/03/09 08:36 PM

Something happened to my computer; we had thunderstorms last night, I guess that must have affected me. Anyway, using a bootable WinXP CD, and a hard-drive scan/repair later, I got it running again, so I can post about Knob Creek.

Whether or not Renee was mistaken about any never before seen Scrap Yard color combos, but both Jeff (Rainwalker) and I were on the leading edge of the wave, and we didn't see new offerings. As a matter of fact, all the AKs were gone and a vendor was checking out with the last 6 Dog Fathers when we walked up -- I don't want to start an argument about it, but its no longer a rumor to me that stuff gets sold early, whether to vendors during table setup or the night before at the motel, it happens. Still, I came away with a good haul:
1) The lone Arctic White/hand-shaped black G10 FSH leftover from the VetDayGanza
2) A Bama Clay/hand-shaped tan Micarta NMSFNO (one of 3)
3) An Olive/pumpkin G10 SAR5 -- I have other SAR5s, but not in that color.
4) The last set of tigerhide Micarta 1911 grips -- I don't have a .45 for them yet, but one of these days...
5) Two BDLEs (#s 47 and 48)
6) Two SoD LEs (#s 33 and 209) -- After I checked out, I asked if they were a show special because the LE price was the same as the CGs; it turned out that they were mis-marked, the remaining LEs got re-priced.

The field where they parked us was soft when I arrived, and a mud hole by the time I left -- I had to be dragged out of the mud by a tractor. I (think that I) took some pictures of the Busse tables -- I'll install the Cannon camera software and try get them off and onto PhotoBucket to post.

Things do go quick at the Creek....were there any MOAB's on the table when you got there Jim? If so...how much were they? What was the price of the combat ones?
Posted By: Jim

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/03/09 10:07 PM

They didn't have any CG MOABs; I suppose because they're custom shop vs production, they were all satin and the ones I looked at were $2197. They were not nearly as unwieldy as I expected, but I thought NMFBMs were pricey and those MOABs are 4X as expensive. Here are some on the table:

And you can see the ends of more in the long boxes under the table:

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/03/09 10:20 PM

As you can see from the Mini Mojo, there were some interesting camo patterns; here are a couple pics of ASHs:
[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

I remembered that heavy ASH (.312 inch thick) in Bama Clay from last Fall, then it was item 4D in the VetDayGanzaaa, now it's back on the table; won't somebody give it a home?

That is a very cool looking SFNO at the top of your picture. Sabre ground with a harpoon tip. you gotta like that.

Here's one that shows a Bama Clay NMSFNO like I bought:

FBMs and a fighter variant.

I think Drew said that the fighter in this picture is based on a FSH

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/03/09 10:40 PM

I'm not doing the best job in the world of organizing these, so I'll just say here are some more:
[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

Garth said that the mosaic-pin, bone handled, mirror-polished bowie started out as an ASH blank. I saw that "White Snake" HR and thought Jeff Forbush would like it; he couldn't make it to the show today, perhaps it'll still be there tomorrow. EDIT: I searched the Busse Combat sub-forum and found Jeff's post from last Fall (Knob Creek Fall 08 Score) -- he already has a "White Snake" HR; I remembered that he bought a couple in that color scheme, but couldn't recall which ones.

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

Drew said that the gray-handled knife on the right started out as a small silent knight, but was ground down to be even smaller -- I liked its clean lines.

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/03/09 10:56 PM

Here's the "small table"

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

Those interesting looking knives without talon holes are HACKs, but unlike the first HACK release, they're a comfortable and useful size. The HACKs on the top row had longer blades than the closer ones.
[Linked Image from i202.photobucket.com]

I was tempted by the Bama Clay warden, but I've always maintained that ADs are inherently superior, so I passed, but it was cute.

Jim in the next to last picture you posted, what are the small knives with no talon holes just to the left of the 1911 grips???

After reading I see what they are.

None of those really jump out at me like the new S5, not to say I wouldn't be thrilled to own any of them.

They're labeled as HACKs; they're INFI and priced below $200. There are two different types; the ones in the top row had longer blades than the ones below. These are defiantly NOT those (nearly miniature) Bear Cub HACKs that disappointed quite a few who bought them. The blades were of useful size and the handles felt quite comfortable in my hand -- for folks who hate talon holes and/or like a slightly slimmer handle, these may be just what you've been looking for.

I just got back from there. And man, you're right about that bog they had us park in...that sucked leaving. At least I didn't have to be pulled out... the positrac rear-end came through.

I bought a couple of blades... the bottom two in this picture:

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/04/09 01:00 AM

The ones with the white coating are sick looking. I'd be kinda hard to loose those out in the woods. I do a lot of fishing at night on the coast. I have a thrashed beater cold steel bolo machete and I've spend a good amount of time looking for that thing after i put it down or thrown it. I finally threw a coat of white paint on it, now its a light bulb. Thanks for posting the pictures!!!!!

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/04/09 04:50 AM

You all are quite welcome; I'm glad to have been able to share. I got some really good stuff, but I think this is the first Knob Creek where I didn't encounter something truly unexpected. Renee's statement about new color combos had me excited, but I think I must have missed out on it -- I have an idea about what she was referring to and may still be able to get one, but I don't want to say anything else that might disrupt the deal.

I suppose there was one thing that qualifies as unexpected, but in a delayed satisfaction sort of way -- I'd asked Garth if he might be able to bring a GrooveMaster like the one Jeff Forbush bought last Fall. I didn't know if Garth could accommodate my request without commissioning it as a Custom, but he told me today that he'd found an old GM blank and had it in for heat treatment; with all the other work they had, it isn't finished yet but he'll get back to me when it is.

Re: Notes from Knob Creek - Spring 2009 - 04/05/09 01:57 AM

I don't know what they did for parking today; the weather was great today -- sunny and warm, but it's hard to imagine that those fields could have been restored after only one day. As far as the FSH goes -- I know you're joking, but I don't think you'd have a bit of trouble getting your money back out of that one, possibly even with travel expenses and the admission price added in. Those hand finished handles are sweet; the only second-guessing I'm experiencing is whether I should have grabbed the other hand finished Micarta FSH like yours instead of the NMSFNO I bought (Bama Clay with hand finished tan Micarta).

Because the hand finished grips were a $60 upgrade for NMSFNOs, it actually cost more than that FSH would've -- it was even a little more than the Arctic White and hand finished black G10 FSH I bought. I REALLY like that combo, Of the 4 FSH I own, three are in that; the other is a Bama Clay with machined tan Micarta. However, I do have to say that hand finished grips feel great on that NMSFNO, and there wasn't a whole lot in Bama Clay.

I guess it was a good thing I couldn't go because there would have been too many choices for me. Although, I would like to have got a DF, a Mud Puppy, and one of the Rat ax.
