Scrapper 5 . . . The Rest Of The Story - 04/05/09 12:28 AM

As you know by now, a pic of the Scrapper 5 with an INFI logo was taken from my, supposedly, private account and posted on these forums. My account was set to private, not public, and was password protected. A few phone calls to Photobucket and they have now fixed the problem.

I was quite surprised to see it posted here and was very disappointed that someone would post it without asking permission. Doesn't it seem obvious that if I had wanted it made public, I would have posted it myself? If not, wouldn't it have been common courtesy to email me and ask for my permission? I NEVER posted a direct link to my photo gallery. It was accessed by copying the picture property code and then deleting the pic id, etc. I thank those who had access to the pic but refrained from posting it. 'Nuff said. Let's move on.

Now, for the rest of the Scrapper 5 story. The reason that the word "INFI" was covered in the photo was because I really don't know what the LE is going to be made out of yet. The Scrapper 5 INFI pic was a private joke between my brother and I. Everyday I email him a link to that pic with a different heading to prod him into going along with my latest bourbon soaked idea.

Here's the idea;

I have been trying to work with the production team at Busse to see if we could make this happen. So far, not so promising. Jerry is currently in the middle of a very large run and I am trying to convince him to use bar stock that is 6 inches longer than what they are currently using. If they do this, then the remaining length needed for the Scrapper 5 can be gleaned from the webs that they are discarding. He is getting 4 knives out of every web at this time. Using my idea, each 6 inch longer web would produce a single Scrapper 5 LE that would be priced within most everyone's range. (Under $200.00)

I was hoping to surprise you guys with that pic if we were able to make it happen out of INFI. If not, then nobody would be the wiser. No harm, no foul. The LE would be made out of 154CM as is the current plan. So, the cats out of the bag, sort of. Actually, at this point, the cat's not even in the bag. But either way, its going to be a great knife whether it's made out of INFI or 154CM.

Getting Jerry to part with additional INFI is tricky, but I've been greasing him with as much scotch as I can afford. I'll continue to keep working him over.

Now, for some really exciting news about the Combat Grade Scrapper 5. It will be made out of through-hardened SR101!!! I am very excited about this steel for this model. It truly is the best steel choice for this blade in a coated version.

Keep your fingers crossed, your glasses filled, and I'll keep you informed.

HELL yeah, sign me up. Thanks for clearing everything up and don't worry, I'm sure you still have many, many customers eager for that beautiful knife. I speak for myself when I say I can't wait. 154CM is an excellent steel for an excellent design. INFI would be gravy, but I wants me some meatloaf Thanks again.

154 CM for the LE would still be a fine knife, but the BIG news is SR101 for the CG. I may have to get one of each. Sorry about posting the pic (which I copied from somebody else), but it was an exciting idea.

Thanks....I'm a contractor...govt type. I USED blade from 30 maker over the past 25yrs , and won my first Busse in a card game in Bangkok. I was a testing advisor to DoD in the early 80's.....I only wish we had the Busse(kin) available then. Life is too short for bad and ugly knives. So my small collection is a toolbox of only those which I've tested to be reliable....My SwampRat and now my Srapeyards make up 80%. I've seen what happens when equipment fails....so I'll sick with the YARD.

Thanks for working hard trying to get us Infi
at Scrapyard prices!
Either way,I will be getting at least 1 of each (cg le)
Thanks again!

never post pictures from to the forum would help you,

I'm sure going to hope for INFI, though!

Sorry that the cat escaped. I know that you are doing your best for the Yard.

SR101 on the CG... awesome! I love the SR101 steel and with a coating, for this application, is the perfect choice.

On the LE, if you can grease Jerry with enough JWB to spring some Infi that would be ideal.

Re: Scrapper 5 . . . The Rest Of The Story - 04/05/09 03:40 AM

Dan,

Thanks for sharing the story. Sorry things got out of hand on this one. I hope we are all good and can be past this.

Thanks for your efforts in getting us some more INFI. I really hope that works out for the LE's. And think that will be VERY cool option.

Personally, I am also BIG TIME stoked about hearing about SR-101. I LOVE SR-101.

I wish I could get a satin SR-101 and a satin INFI if the prices are right.
If I have to strip my own SR-101 CG though, so be it. ... Hopefully, not too many pits.
I would still love to have both SR-101 and INFI. That would be WAY cool for me and my top two choices.

I look forward to hearing the prices and the end result on the INFI.

I still think the whole thing is kind of silly, but who am I? just an opinionated noob.

Now that I've read the SR101 news, I'm stoked and determined to get a combat grade instead of the potential INFI LE! Thanks for the great news, Dan!

The ONLY reason I'd buy an LE over a CG is if the LE turns out to be constructed of INFI. A 154CM LE would be a beautiful knife, no doubt. But compared to through-hardened SR101, it's no contest AFAIC.

Agreed. I'd be all over an INFI version. I'd probably also buy an SR101 version (or even an SR77 version). A 154CM version? I'll pass. There's nothing wrong with 154CM, but INFI, SR101, and SR77 are what put these companies on the map and what make these knives what they are.

And SR-101 is 52100 ball-bearing steel, great stuff, check it out.

Dan, sorry to hear the cat got out of the bag early. It does suck when you work on a surprise and it gets ruined.

Now, will have to get both since I need an example of both blades, a CG since it is SR101 and the LE because that is what I have examples of now. I passed my tan SOD to a friend that is a knife conisouer, he would not leave me alone LOL.

Re: Scrapper 5 . . . The Rest Of The Story - 04/05/09 07:13 PM

bottom line. if its sr77, sr101, or infi (busse kin steels) its going to be one kick [censored] knife. and i dont have one knife with mudder grips... what are the advantages of it over the DMCG grips and the normal res c grips on most other sy knives?

Re: Scrapper 5 . . . The Rest Of The Story - 04/05/09 07:57 PM

I don;t know what grips are on the CGDM, but I do have the res c. I can tell you that the mudders on my MUK has to be the gripper I have ever held. I hope to get a deer this season and then I will know for sure when there is blood all over the grip.

3/16" thick would be my guess, rs. IIRC, Scrap Yard hasn't produced a knife thicker than that with a mudder handle. And if we're talking through-hardened SR101 and INFI, that's PLENTY thick enough for a 5" blade.

I hope it is NOT thicker than 3/16" (0.1875"). I might be O.K. with up to .20" (????).

But, 3/16" seems ideal for this knife IMO.

Private Klink, how goes it. I haven' been here in a looong time. Seems if all the action is going on over here and at Busse Combat! I like the looks of this new S5 and also the SAR4! When can we expect exact specs for each and prices?

Thanks

For the smaller blades (I have the Mudpuppy and Scrapmuk) the mudder grip has a much more maneuverable feel than the normal Res C. Strange as it may sound, after holding the mudder grip, it makes my DMDC and YK feel small to the hand. After picking up the MudPuppy, I will pretty much by anything with a mudder grip now...

Re: Scrapper 5 . . . The Rest Of The Story - 04/06/09 05:27 AM

Heya Everyone,

Sorry I have been gone, glad I have been summoned back. I have been taking a certification course with a very unprofessional and, well, just plain mean instructor. After finishing the course last week Saturday I have been vegging a little and trying to prep for job interviews etc.

Well, my son had different plans. He was born four weeks early this past Friday morning at around 7am. Labor was 7 hours. He was 7lbs and 7oz. He screwed up on his length and missed it by 'that much' at 20". We were totally unprepared, of course (is anyone ever prepared for their first?). We got home today.

The Scrapper 5 looks freaking awesome. I think it looks like a poor mans version of a badger attacks. I love the idea of SR101 on this blade, especially with mudders, the best possible combo.

After looking at the Rainwalker sheaths, I am very impressed. He offers a lot of options and the pricing is not too high. I'm sure you will be happy to find some pants for your Night Strider and RAT 4 Bruce. I've never owned a Scrapyard knife yet, but I am really looking forward to this new release. All I've used for fixed blades are Fallknivens, Busse's and some customs. The handles on the Scrapyards look nice and comfortable. And regardless of the blade material, 154 or Infi, both are very nice steels.

I don't know much about SR101 steel, but it sounds like its tough and a lot of you guys like it. So I am sure it will be a nice option. Does it sharpen as easily as 154cm?

INFI, SR-101 and SR-77 are proprietary "NAMES" made up by Jerry. The steels themselves are somewhat (possibly / unknown) proprietary as well.

But, in general:

INFI: is appears to be unique and a (most likely) a true proprietary steel. I have not yet seen any steel that has similar composition to INFI's. Some speculate that is is based on A-8 chipper steel. But, the compositions vary considerably and I don't really see or understand the comparison of INFI to A-8 (?????)

SR-101: is basically "52100" - that is "rumored" to be "modified", but there is no "known" information to support any modifications to the steel composition other than a proprietary heat-treatment.

SR-77: is basically S7 - that is "rumored" to be "modified", but there is no "known" information to support any modifications to the steel composition other than a proprietary heat-treatment.

Most knife-makers and other people knowledgeable about forging and uses for steel will concure that Heat-treatment is a HUGE part of what makes any given steel great for "intended" purposes - whatever those purposes are.

Busse has earned HUGE respect for their ability to make GREAT knife steel and provide "consistantly" great steel. Toughness is VERY high while still providing very good edge properties.
