An Australian Nuclear Twist - 05/13/09 03:48 PM

Hello everybody.

I thought the yard may be interested in what I unearthed on a local knife forum. One of the members modified some Busse and Swamp Rat hardware with an Australian twist. The results can be found here:

P-Easy,

Thanks for letting me know. I will try and get permission from the original poster on the other forum to use his pictures.

Re: An Australian Nuclear Twist - 05/13/09 04:49 PM

bld522,

Thank you for that information. I appreciate the strict legality of public domain, but I must diverge from that in the interest of someone's perceived rights to his content. Sometimes, in my opinion, giving up one's rights in order to accommodate another person's- whether actual or perceived- is a more beneficial path, with less likelihood of any ill-will between members of different forums. With this in mind, I do ask for the Yard's patience and I hope this small hiccup does not blow expectations out of proportion.

As a preview, the link was to a thread detailing a modder's work on a Ratweiler, a Busse Natural Outlaw E Series and a Tanker A. The modder re-handled the knives with Western Australian Jarrah scales and mirror polished the blades (the Ratweiler also had some small profile and grind modifications as well.)

Hope to bring you pictures soon!

David.

Well... hopefully you get his permission. But you most certainly DON'T HAVE to have it. Once you put pics on a hosting service, that's it. You don't retain much in the way of rights to them. Whether someone perceives it that way or not.

Now, it's a totally different situation if someone has his own website on which he can host pictures.

Personally I'm not a big fan of mirror polished knives, but I do appreciate the hard work put into the knives. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

MRpink,

I agree. Polished blades are blades I like to see but not to own. I would be too concerned about messing up the finish!

Those look awesome. Unlike some others, I like highly polished blades. Especially with the right handles.

Yep I agree <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Those are beautiful! I wouldn't mind owning a knife like that but I would just want to display it as using it would be a crime.

A big +1 on that! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> I love the wood he used for the handles; it looks almost like a nice dark cherry wood, but with a richer tone to it.

I can't imagine the time and patience it took to get that glossy mirror finish to the steel. I love them, but would probably end up making a shadow box to put them in, and just display them.

nice!!! still i have to agree with the others on this. great to look at but you really have to think too hard about using a knife with a the finish like that.

Not me! If I had a knife that looked like that, especially if I did the polishing, etc. myself, I would get a very nice leather IWB sheath with a stud and carry it daily.

Use it good and you'll have a pretty satin finish by the end of the day. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Typically, pictures posted to the internet become part of the public domain. That's certainly the case with pics uploaded to image hosting services like Photobucket.com. As long as you give credit to the original poster, you should be able to copy his/her pictures to your hard disk without requesting permission in advance, upload them to your own Photobucket or other image hosting service account, and then post them here. Or, if you're using a Windows workstation, you can simply right-click the original image, go to the bottom of the menu and click on "Properties", highlight and copy the Address of the image, and then post it here preceded by an suffix.

Try it. You'll like it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Sigh, we've had this discussion before. Posting photos to the internet does NOT put them in the public domain. Giving credit to the photographer doesn't make it OK. Neither does posting them to Photobucket - http://photobucket.com/copyright and http://photobucket.com/terms

While the terms do give license to use the image elsewhere, it only applies as long as the image is actually hosted by the original artist on Photobucket. If it is removed the license to use it is revoked.

Pay specific attention to this line -
Quote
After you remove your Content from the Photobucket Website we will cease distribution as soon as practicable, and at such time when distribution ceases, the license to such Content will terminate. If after we have distributed your Content outside the Photobucket Website you change the Content’s privacy setting to "private," we will cease any further distribution of such "private" Content outside the Photobucket Website as soon as practicable.

Sorry for being picky, but this is how I made my living for over 20 years and it's annoying to see misinformation put out. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

Bruce,

I consider you a friend. Politely and respectfully, I tell you that you are in error. Posting pictures online does not put pictures into the public domain; the copyright remains solely with the author, unless the author chooses to give it or sell it.

Doing as you say is illegal; it violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. You are irresponsibly giving misinformation which is personally harmful to me, and encouraging people to break the law and put themselves at risk. Please cease.

And for all readers here: You do not have permission to download nor host my pictures. I will protect my copyrights. If I find out that my pictures are being stolen, I will seek legal recourse against you, for the fullest damages possible.

And, if you are stealing my work and hosting it, then through picture search sites like tineye.com, eventually I will find you.
