Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/16/09 06:03 PM

Thanks for putting this all together for us. To me, I can't help but wonder though if the handle material results are a little misleading. By that I mean, under "natural" we have just about every slab type material, vs. two separate types of res-c. I wonder if we "leveled the playing field" a little and either made separate categories for the various slabs, OR didn't differentiate between the two types of res-c what the results would have been. My guess is that overall, res-c would far outweigh slabs, as such is the case if you add "old" and mudders together....hope that made sense.

Also, what seems to jump out to me is how closely favored INFI and SR101 are. They both seem to take 1st or 2nd for just about every option (with INFI at 3rd for EDC and SR101 at 3rd for choppers).

Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/16/09 07:46 PM

Excellent work, Bruce. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> The EDC category steel isn't a huge surprise - 154CM, but the SR101/INFI closeness in the utility and camp knives is a little.

It's nice to see how our preferences stackup. A few statistics can go a long way.

Perhaps, or maybe we (me mostly <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />) are a little biased toward the Yard and Swamp... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/17/09 12:19 AM

I am not sure I draw the same conclusion. I read the poll as what size knife is this steel best for, not what is the best steel for this size knife. So I like 154CM for the EDC, but not over Infi. I picked it in both categories. Also there are a lot of factors that are unknown. If asked with price being no object, would anyone pick any of the other 3 steels being superior to Infi?

That being said, I loved the poll and seeing what the results were.

Yeah, I understand. There is only so many questions people will answer in a survey.

Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/17/09 02:54 AM

Excellent job Bruce. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> Interesting results. I'm sure this information is quite helpful to anyone making/selling knives but especially the Busse-kins. It helps to know what your customers want. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Combine this with my poll on what factors folks consider most when making a knife purchasing decision and a lot can be gained. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Nice work!

Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/17/09 07:19 AM

Bruce this is by far the coolest result to any BLD522 poll EVER! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

I am impressed by the vote totals. It shows that many Dogs who hide in obscurity still read often enough to post the specific needs and wants in a Scrap Yard blade. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Now to see how effective this really is... let's see Dan post his comments on the Scrap yard preference poll and see how this fits his plan for future projects. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" />

This is as close to a Public Opinion Poll on his products as he can get without hiring a outside firm! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Well done Bruce! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif" alt="" />

First and foremost, I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this survey. We received a STAGGERING 1,070 votes! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Without further ado, here are the results:

[Linked Image from i159.photobucket.com]

Again, the categories were:

EDC's -- blade lengths up to 4.0"
Utility Blades/Fighters -- blade lengths from 4.1" - 6.0"
Camp Knives -- blade lengths from 6.1" - 8.0"
Choppers -- blade lengths greater than 8.0"

High scores are highlighted in red in the percentages section. By reading across, you can determine our favorite alloy, blade thickness and handle material in each category. So our favorite EDC, for example, would be constructed of 154CM (41% of the votes) with a blade thickness less than 3/16" (69% of the vote) and a Micarta/G10/Natural handle (43% of the votes).

We had one tie. In Camp Knives, blade thickness scored equally between 3/16" to less than 1/4" and greater than 1/4". So a blade thickness of at least 3/16" thick would be acceptable for a Bussekin Camp Knife.

In Summary, here are our favorites in each category:

EDC: 154CM, less than 3/16" thick, Micarta/G10/Natural handle
Utility/Fighter: SR101, 3/16" to less than 1/4" thick, Mudder handle
Camp Knife: INFI, at least 3/16" thick, standard Res-C handle
Chopper: SR77, at least 1/4" thick, standard Res-C handle

Thanks again to everyone who participated! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Wow that was a lot of votes...very cool. There is a lot of data and I will be reviewing it in detail

Thanks for going to this effort <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Re: Marketing Survey Results - 05/17/09 10:52 PM

Note that every category received votes, none had zero. I guess this goes to show our faith in Dan and the Yard to make an awesome knife even with, perhaps at first glance, an unconventional paring of steel, handle materials, and size.

Thanks, Dave. And thanks, Dan. We've had a lot of polls in the past that looked at various aspects of our wants and desires, but nothing that gave us a consolidated picture-at-a-glance. And I really wanted to see where we stood as a community. It took some time to set up the categories, determine the variables and design the spreadsheet. But to be perfectly honest, none of it was terribly difficult. I just had to think it through.

As others have pointed out, I missed a few aspects of our selection process and I made a few assumptions for the sake of simplicity. For example, a couple of people suggested that I should have taken price into consideration. And had I been in one of the other Busse forums, I might very well have done that. But the fact is, I've never heard anyone complain about the price Dan has set on a Scrap Yard knife. And I designed this survey primarily for The Yard. I figured that, whatever he decided to do with the data moving forward, Dan would never abandon his "superior performance to price ratio" motto. That's why I decided not to factor price into the survey.

This forum is my home away from home. And I know for a fact that I'm not the only one for whom that's true. Anything I do for The Yard I also do for myself. And while I'm glad that Dan feels the results of the survey are worth reviewing, I would have conducted it even if I knew at the outset that he wouldn't pay any attention to the results. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for keeping the gate open for us, Dan. And Long Live The Yard! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbup.gif" alt="" />

Well stated.

Thanks
Dan
